The poster said Mavado and Friends, but the star power assembled onstage at SOB’s last Tuesday night was more than anybody bargained for. Serani, Bounty, Matterhorn, Wyclef, Shaggy…
NYC Superstation Hot 97 and V.P. Records sponsored the official release party for the Gully God’s new album, David Brooks: A Better Tomorrow and the venue was rammed from early with a line around the block. Massive B sounds kept the capacity crowd boucing until just after midnight, when Jabba told the crowd “I’ve got a new artist for uno… Work with him.” A few disappointed groans soon turned to screams of delight when a familar voice sang “It’s… It’s… It’s… Serani.” Bounty Killer soon stepped in to rep for the Alliance along with Flexx in the Complex. But that was just the beginning: Tony Matterhorn, Wyclef Jean, and Shaggy all passed through to bless the proceedings, and boomshots.com was there. By the time Foota Hype dropped the answer riddim and Matterhorn passed the mic to Bounty Killer, the vibes got crazy. Let’s go to the video tape.
And do remember to “Big up Mr. Brooks business,” just like Shaggy said.
Part two of the video, Mavado makes a joyful noise and even spits Jay-Z’s verse to “On The Rock.”
Check out Caramanica’s review of the show in the New York Times.
And watch for the big Mavado feature in the April issue of VIBE.
Respect in all aspect.
