Dutty Paul Has The Last Laugh
Two years after parting ways with Atlantic Records, Grammy-winning dancehall superstar Sean Paul has signed a new contract with Island Records, according to Kevin Jackson at the Jamaica Observer. After making history with a series of chart-topping releases for VP/Atlantic, Sean has stayed Gettin’ Busy as an independent artist, recording hit features with acts ranging from Enrique Iglesias to Major Lazer and most recently Sia. The Australian-born star’s Dutty Paul duet “Cheap Thrills,” has already topped Billboard’s Dance Music Club Play chart and now sits at #6 on the Hot 100. Video & Full Story After The Jump…
“Sean is a transformational figure in reggae and a pioneer in bringing dancehall music to the global mainstream,” said Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman, who signed Sean in 2002, Soon after dropping the multiplatinum dancehall star from the label in 2014. In a statement to Billboard he added: “Since he joined the Atlantic family he has made a series of hugely influential records and I know he will continue to make brilliant music for many years to come. We wish him all the best as he begins a new chapter of his phenomenal career.”
Sean honestly didn’t seem to mind much: “I am happy to be off of a label because I don’t want someone who at this point is way younger than me, has never written a song, performed on a stage or produced a riddim track, telling me they aren’t feeling my song so try again,” he told Billboard at the time. “It is better that I feel what I want to release; if the public doesn’t want it, at least I know I put my best into it.”
Since then he has not slowed his roll for a moment and now in 2016, Island Records has snapped him up for what must be a decent amount of money—why at this point would Sean really need a label behind him unless they were offering serious paper?
The iconic record label, founded by Chris Blackwell as a reggae imprint in London, famous for bringing Bob Marley to the wide world, expanded with signees like Grace Jones and U2, and eventually sold to Universal Music Group where it was merged with Def Jam and later returned to a standalone label, Island is home to a wide range of major stars. Sean Paul is in very good company and he’s still at the top of his game creatively.
