Angel: Blessings King! Everybody is feeling your new song, “Glory to God.”

Wayne Marshall: Bless up. The response has been surreal. I am receiving such wonderful feedback and comments on social media. This is really a validation for me, that God is using me as a conduit for his will. It is very fore filling, because I offered up my self spiritually and everything happening makes me know that my God is real. The creative process, brought me closer to God and then I was able to take myself out of the equation and the song’s message expanded.

Angel:  How did this musical journey begin for you?

Wayne Marshall: My mom had a good voice, but like many creatives she got caught up in the corporate world, taking care of the family and doing the 9-5 schedule. I grew with my mother, father and my only brother. We listened to all walks of music when we went driving to places.  But I really gravitated towards the music of Sade and Bob Marley. The music contained transformative lyrics. The melody of the songs could take you different places. I always aspired to make music like this. So we ended up moving 3 doors up the road from King Jammy’s  when I was 9 turning 10. I made friends with Trevor, King Jammy’s son and we would go into the studio with his father and study “Bounty Hunta” now the great “Bounty Killer.” We were students of the dancehall, watching every move like flies on the wall. It was an Academy for music and we would spend hours at a time, soaking up the vibes and energy. When I reflect back, being in such close vicinity to these legendary artists, like Bounty, Sanchez, Capleton, Ini Kamoze was like observations, learning, daily schooling at King Jammy’s hub. We laughed along with the jokes, we honed into conversations, we saw how they wrote and deejayed. When we were 16 and 17 we began writing our own songs. I went to Bounty and told him I want to be in the business and voice a combination with him. What we came up with was, “When The Smoke Clears.” From there other artist took us under their wing including Connelly Suku, an artist with an amazing baritone voice,  Elephant Man, Assassin (Agent Sasco). We knew Assasin when he used to wear some messed up Patrick Ewing shoes. We were touring with these artist, and they put me on when they did not have to. Then I put a lot of time into becoming a “Theory Nerd,” learning notes and how to play the piano and guitar. I wanted to develop my sound and simultaneously, I wanted to write songs that would have an impact. I wanted to equip myself and be like a Bob Marley or Jimmy Cliff.

Angel: How does this song mirror your growth as an artist?

Wayne Marshall: I learned over time that God is at the essence of all worship.  I was listening to some riddims from Natural High and then I had a moment where I felt God and wanted to speak to him in song. I know that I can express my spirituality in my music, to the point that my spirituality is my music. This song reflects where I am in my life and how I have evolved professionally and personally. I hope that this song will awaken the consciousness and change the hearts and minds of others, who hear it.

Angel: Does this mean that you will sing only spiritual or gospel songs?

Wayne Marshall: I may make more spiritual songs, but I may make other songs too. I just want people to know God is accessible to everyone, no matter where they are in their journey.

Angel: Congratulations on the success of this song and thank you for sharing with Boomshots Magazine.

Wayne Marshall: Thank you Angel, Rob and the family at  Boomshots Magazine.
