Virtual Werlboss Blazes Some Grades With Hot Gyals Galore

Let’s say you’ve got a bad new tune and you want to shoot a video, but unfortunately your leading man is unavoidably detained. Head Concussion solved the creative dilemma with the power of technology. Sure, the CG video for Vybz Kartel’s “Hi” would have been even better with Di Teacha himself, but necessity is the mother of invention and every mickle mek a mockle. Video After The Jump…

WATCH THIS: Chino “Nuh Trust Dem” Official Music Video PREMIERE

Michael “BiggzShip” Burbridge directs the gritty visuals for Chino’s tune on Rado’s hard-hitting First Capital Riddim. This one is aimed at the two-faced back-biting news-carrying smile-in-yuh-face dutty-heart people who so often surround us. Chino is wise enough to know that trust is a thing that must be earned, and once broken may never be returned. It’s a hard lesson that’s usually learned the hard way. Dig the image of the man lifting weights in the scrapyard, like he’s preparing for the battle of his life. Good over evil me say. Stick with this video until the end, and you can pree a preview of a next Chino tune called “Oh Jah” a JA Production that fits the overall theme. When everyone turns against you, who else can you trust but the Almighty? Boomshots is proud to premiere this official music video. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Is This Who Red Rat Was Talking About?

Back in 1997 Red Rat spotted a girl who made his “head swell and his blood pressure burst” thanks to her snugly fitting skirt. That was the same year Samantha J was born. Now she’s 16 years old and she’s got a major hit song on her hands, with a video that blends Britney, Rihanna and Gwen Stefani. No wonder MTV is calling it “Buzzworthy.”  The track—co-written with Alaine and produced by Conroy Forte for Washroom Entertainment—is currently the #1 Most Shared, #2 Most Commented and #3 Overall Favorite on MTV.com. Click here for a first look at Samantha J’s debut video. “We wanted to show what Britney Spears’ ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ would have looked like if it was shot in Downtown Kingston with authentic dancehall choreography and dancers,” says Samantha. Mission accomplished. Video After The Jump…

Big Bad Musical Selection Straight Outta Ricky Blaze Basement

Mr Easy has always been that dude who was “Easy like Sunday morning” but beneath the surface he’s killing shit. This is a guy who won back-to-back episodese of “Showtime at the Apollo” singing “On The Wings of Love” inna dancehall style. This is a dude who grew up in Trelawney knowing a young Biggie Smalls, and went to the church where Biggie’s uncle was a pastor! And of course his BK dancehall credentials are impeccable—not to mention his work for Dave and Tony Kelly. But recently he’s been getting busy in Ricky Blaze’s basement studio, cutting tracks like this. No wonder the gal dem a call him “don.”  Audio After The Jump…

Melanie Fiona Picks Her 10 Favorite Reggae & Dancehall Songs

The Grammy-Winning R&B Star Is A Bashment Girl At Heart

Melanie Fiona is best known for heart-wrenching hits like “It Kills Me” and “4 A.M.,” which have made the soulful singer a major star among American R&B fans. The two-time Grammy winner grew up in Toronto as the daughter of first-generation Guaynese immigrants. Her Caribbean influences have always been clear to the educated ear, from her dramatic vocal delivery to specific songs like “Somebody Come Get Me,” which was released under her old nom-de-reggae Syren Hall, as well as “No Cigarette Smoke,” her smoldering duet with Stephen Marley. Melanie continues to flaunt her Caribbean colors on “All My Love,” a new reggae-flavored duet with Toronto soul singer Glenn Lewis. Listening to the song there’s no mistaking the fact that Melanie’s Caribbean roots run deep. So we thought it would be cool to ask her to pick her top 10 reggae and dancehall tracks. Her picks speak volumes about her musical taste, her artistic temperment, and (dare we say it?) MF’s wild side. Click through the gallery above to check out Melanie’s selections and then read her candid conversation with Reshma B. Video And Interview After The Jump… (more…)

Tessanne Lays Down The Law On the Fight This Feeling Juggling

Now that the Shaggy and Beres selection “Fight This Feeling” is a certified modern classic, the good folks at Ranch Entertainment had the good sense to release a full juggling pon the Sly & Robbie riddim, first deployed on Dennis Brown’s “Sitting and Watching.” There are some nice cuts on here, but the one we’ve got stuck on repeat is by Tessanne Chin, who’s currently tearing shit up on NBC’s The Voice even though reggae lovers have known about her voice for years. Singing like the grown woman she is Tessanne calls out a trifling man who’s showing signs that he’s taking her for granted, or even worse, playing her for a fool. Listen up fellas.  Audio After The Jump…

  • HEAR THIS: Mavado “Soldiers”

JA Productions and the Gully Gaad Send A Livication To Roach
    Mavado
Mavado strikes a mournful tone on his latest release, which he livicates to “all the fallen soldiers.” But there’s no doubt which soldier he had in mind when he voiced this tune for JA Productions. Patrick “Roach” Samuels was murdered shortly after co-producing “Give It All To Me,” Mavado’s collaboration with Nicki Minaj that is currently tearing up the charts in yard and foreign. Justus Arison, Roach’s partner in JA Productions, put together a backing track that sets an appropriately somber mood with its heavy dubbed-out horn line. “Reunite when this battle is over,” Mavado sings, “but they always seem to take the ones who close to me.” As every wise artist knows, music alone shall live, and never die. Audio After The Jump…

    HEAR THIS: Popcaan “Everything Nice”

The First Single Off Papi’s Debut Album

Don’t be deceived by the title—everyTING is not as nice as it may appear at first glance. Sure Popcaan may be the raving king, but why does he rave? “Me nuh when me go inna the grave,” he sang on one of his best-known party tunes, “so right now me ravin.” On this Dubbel Dutch production, Popcaan peppers the airy, atmospheric track with pensive thoughts about the people who work hard, all who gone to the morgue, or wish R.I.P. to a loved one. “Put your cups dem high,” the Hotskull intones. It’s a celebration, bitches. Popcaan’s debut album is due out on Mixpak records early next year. The key concept? “Bittersweet blissfulness.” Get your mind right.  Audio After The Jump…

Gongzilla Combines With The Kid On This Brand New Madhouse Selection

A new joint from The Stranger (aka Dave Kelly) is an event. He and his brother Tony created the blueprint of modern dancehall. The Stranger’s latest production shows a definite trap/EDM influence but it still sounds just as Stink as ever. Junior Gong sings a hook that sounds like a Bible verse (“We shall reap the riches, plentiful like the grains of sand”) while Cham spits bars on behalf of “The faithful, the ones who never stop till the work is done.
