Reasoning With The Selector for London’s Mighty Saxon Studio International
    TrevorSaxBoomshots
“I like to play the vinyls,” says Trevor Sax of Saxon Studio International. If you don’t believe him, you need to brush up your sound system history. Founded in 1976 as the Imperial Rockers, by Dennis Rowe and Lloyd ‘Musclehead’ Francis, the sound changed its name to Saxon Studio International two years later. They are a cornerstone of the UK reggae industry, shining a light on future stars like Peter King, Papa Levi, Tippa Irie, Smiley Culture, and Maxi Priest. Trevor Sax joined up in 1981. Our friends over at Animal New York tell us this may be Sax’s first interview ever, and we’ve got no reason to doubt them. “He gave us a glimpse into his vinyl collection, which is so massive that records are piled in virtually in every room. Some are even stowed away behind hidden panels, which Sax laughingly pried open with a butter knife to exclaim: More records!” You get the idea. It’s a UK fing. Video After The Jump… (more…)

WATCH THIS: Tommy Lee & Spartan Army “Real Bad Gyal” / “Di Creature” Official Video

    Di Creature Is Coming—Beware!

Tommy Lee is back and this time he’s bringing his whole Spartan Army: Jimbo Sparta, plus Tabeta Cshae, Stylish, and Destiny. [Click through the gallery above to get familiar.] So what if the “army” consists of just one other dude plus three hot girls? They’re still an army—plus they’re all demons. The Spartan Army just dropped a new double-barreled video for “Real Bad Gyal” and “Di Creature,” the lead singles from UIM Records’ eerie new riddim. At the top of the video, Stylish, Destiny, and Tabeta rock zombie gear as they break down what it means to be a “Real Bad Gyal,” from busting guns to, um, biting necks. (Sidebar: Did you ever make love to a demon?) In the second half of the clip, Tommy Lee and his sparring partner Jimbo Sparta take it back to the future on “Di Creature,” which looks more like a summer blockbuster than a typical music video. Actually it’s like watching a midnight movie double feature at the multiplex in less than five minutes: First a sexy lady vampire saga followed by an epic outer-space laser-beam battle flick. Gozu Musiq and Mental Chung Creative Lab took things to the next next level here. Just don’t let the scary masks and special effects fool you, Sparta ah no plaything. “We appear like Katrina / Worse than Hiroshima.” (Click Video After The Jump… (more…)

Jay-Z Samples Sizzla on “Magna Carta Holy Grail”

Jigga’s Track “Crown” is only the latest rap jam to rework Kalonji’s hit “Solid As A Rock”

Whether or not you bought a new Samsung phone, you’re probably listening to Magna Carta Holy Grail right now. Jay-Z’s 12th studio album  leaked shortly after his exclusive app crashed, short-circuiting a multi-million-dollar promo plan. Oh well—meet the #NewRules, same as the #OldNewRules. More importantly, you may already have noticed that track #8, a song called “Crown,” opens with a long, ghostly slowed-down sample of  Sizzla’s 2002 hit “Solid As A Rock,” taken from his classic Bobby Digital–produced album, Da Real Thing. The Jay-Z tune, Produced by Travi$ Scott and 16-year-old newcomer WundaGirl, has folks buzzing about Magna Carter dissing sports agent Scott Boras. But for reggae lovers, it’s all about the continuing trend of major rap releases sampling dancehall tunes. Like many top dancehall artists, Sizzla has collaborated with rap stars in the past—most notably on his duets with Foxy Brown and Dipset. But more than any other song in Sizzla’s vast catalog, “Solid As A Rock” remains his best known release in hip-hop circles. Who can’t relate to a tune whose first words are “They can’t keep a good man down”? Click through the gallery above to revisit all the various rap versions of this Sizzla classic.
