  • WATCH THIS: BRNGTN “Don’t Forsake Me” Video

Brownsville’s Own B-A-double-R-Y Kicks Ballistics Over a Foundation Riddim

BRNGTN is a BK-based rapper who describes his style as “Experimental / Hip Hop / Reggae.” Considering how much wack rapping has been done over reggae beats, getting it this right is somewhat of an experiment. His rhymes connect because they avoid cliche and get right to the heart of the “Everyday Struggle” between good and evil that each of us goes through. Throw that over a hard-hitting version of the “Unchained” riddim and you can’t lose. This tune also supports my theory that remakes of a foundation riddim tracks should be in harmony with the concept of the original song. The musicians played the riddim that way for a reason.  (more…)

  • Massive Attack To Reissue “Blue Lines” Album

Take A Fresh Listen To The Seminal Debut Disc From Bristol’s Wild Bunch

Back in the late 1980s, before terms like “trip hop” and “dubstep” were ever uttered, a sound system called The Wild Bunch decided to start producing their own music. DJs Daddy G and Andrew Vowles joined forced with graffiti artist-turned-rapper Robert “3D” Del Naja. Their 1991 debut album, Blue Lines, was co-produced by the late great Jonny Dollar and Cameron McVey, who became the group’s first manager. Geoff Barrow, who went on to form Portishead, was an intern and tape operator at Bristol’s Coach House studio when the album was recorded. Future solo star Tricky was introduced on the track “Five Many Army.” The album also featured vocals by McVey’s wife Neneh Cherry and the renowned Jamaican reggae singer Horace Andy on songs like the majestic, ethereal “Hymn of the Big Wheel.” The single “Unfinished Symphathy” became a big hit in England, but more importantly Blue Lines introduced a whole new sound and a new way of making music, with a looseknit crew—similar to the Jamaican sound system model—rather than a strictly defined band. Massive Attack are currently working on a new record in Bristol, which is cause for celebration to a certain generation of music lovers. But if you missed the Blue Lines phenomenon the first time around, fret not… (more…)

  • WATCH THIS: Bruno Mars ft. Damian Marley “Liquor Store Blues” Official Video

The Song’s Supposed To Be About Liquor, But There Sure Is A Lot of Smoke In The Air
    LiquorStoreBluesBoomshots

Bruno Mars’s multiplatinum debut album, Doo-Wops and Hooligans, gets filed under “Pop” on the iTunes Music Store, but if you think you hear a lot of reggae on it, you’re right. And it’s no addident. “I was in a reggae band in high school,” Mars told Toure in a recent interview. “Hawaii is really like Bob Marley-ville. [laughs] And for me personally, I think Bob Marley doesn’t get enough credit as a songwriter. I think he’s one of the greatest songwriters ever because of the melody and the simplicity and the message and the emotion that he put behind his music. I’m a fan of him as well as Beres Hammond and Peter Tosh—there’s a lot of other cats. It’s definitely because I’m from Hawaii.” Bruno couldn’t work with Bob, but he did make a tune with Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Bob’s youngest son. So who do you think’s responsible for all that smoke on the video set? Video After The Jump… (more…)
