Jamaican artists shine bright on 96.1 WEFM and at Together As One Concert in Trinidad

Last night’s, July 4th, Together As One Concert (T.A.O) in Trinidad, featured the top headliners in dancehall and soca. The line up included chart toppers from Barbados, Leadpipe & Saddis; Trinidadian popular artists Roy Cape All Stars, Squeeky Ranking, Blaxx, Darnella Simmons, Orlando Octave and Ricardo Drue; and Jamaican dancehall artists Charly Black, Aidonia, Busy Signal and Konshens. FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Phillip Fraser “God of My Righteousness”

Reggae Music Legend in the Mecca of Music and Culture, Brooklyn

The sun was shinning bright as I walked along New York Avenue, in Brooklyn, New York. I was greeted by a Rastafarian King, left hand over the heart, wearing a sunny yellow hat with a polo to match. I tipped my black shades to take a closer look at the face of the person greeting me and it was the living legend himself, Phillip Fraser! He was shocked that I recognized who he was. I said “Great music is great music!” Known for albums like “Come Ethiopians” (1974, Freedom Sound Label), “Back to Africa” (1978, Different Records, original recording with Busta Riley, Winston Riley’s brother) featuring Earth and Stone, “Blood of the Saint” (1983), “Never Let Go” (1991, Razor Sound Records), “Phillip Fraser: Sharp Like Razor” (1993, Razor Sound Records), “More Phillip Fraser” (2015, Razor Sound Records) and a plethora of complication albums and productions. Turf Prez Inna Soca Style

Back in 1984 when Byron Lee and the Dragonaires created their classic hit, “Tiny Winey,” they could not have predicted that this song about a provocative dancer could inspire another soca tune, thirty-one years later. Busy Signal explains that he particularly enjoyed the tune’s exuberant narrative—as well as its infectious riddim—and wanted to create a song, similar in style. This gave rise to his recent release, “WhatsApp” which is getting heavy rotation throughout the Caribbean, particularly in Trinidad and Tobago. The lyrics don’t stray far from the topic of “wining, ” as in “Tiney Winey,” but they also address the impact of social media on today’s society. Adhesive Company Uses Reggae to Market Its Brand to 110 million viewers!

The most entertaining commercials come on during the Superbowl and the Loctite Superglue Company wins, using reggae music to market its brand in 2015. Loctite spent 4.5 million for a 30 second, first-time, advertising slot during Superbowl XLIX. This is more than the German company usually spends on advertising annually, however with the help of the Fallon agency, Loctite is trending more than the spectacular game and halftime show.
