  • MTV Nominates Tifa for Iggy Song of the Summer

    Tifa’s Competing to Become MTV’s ‘Champion Bubbler’

    Tifa has been making plenty of headway the past few months with her hits, “Nuh Good,” “Why Yuh Mad” and her now MTV nominated single, “Champion Bubbler.” The dancehall artist is one of ten that have been nominated by MTV for the Iggy Song of the Summer. Competing with the likes of Bunji Garlin, Tifa is just excited to be a nominee. “It’s an honour to be nominated for this MTV Iggy award. This song is like the little engine that could’, Tifa stated in a release to the media.

    Fans are happy for Tifa and hope that she receives the win. Plenty of them have voted already for her and can continue voting until July 22nd. Check out “Champion Bubbler after the jump. (more…)

  • Beres Hammond Announces North American Tour

    Beres is Coming to a City Near You!

    Beres Hammond has just announced that he will be headlining a North American tour starting in August. The tour will be to promote Hammond’s most recent album, One Love, One Life, released in November. Since the album’s release, Hammond has performed at the Barclay’s Center and on the Jimmy Fallon show but has yet to have his own tour until now!     I-Octane has shaken up the HYPE TV countdown with his newest single, “Buss A Blank,” and has taken the number one spot. “Buss A Blank” has a booming dancehall beat to it and it features I-Octane’s usual lyrical skills as he rhymes about “bussing a blank.” Check out the countdown and “Buss A Blank” afte the jump.

    I-Octane Promises to Shell Down Sumfest

    I-OCTANEReggae Sumfest Dancehall Night is set to take place on July 25th and it has been announced that I-Octane will be the closing act. I-Octane has performed at Reggae Sumfest for the past three years but this will be the first time he will actually be the one to shut the show down!

    I-Octane’s first performance featured a crowd of 5 people but as his act started moving to a later time in the festival, the crowd got larger. This year I-Octane expects to have an extremely large crowd and he will be giving a performance like no other. Though very few details have been released about his performance, he has stated the following: “This will not be just a 2:30 performance for me. I am coming with a different perspective this year. It is not an ego thing for me anymore. This year will be more like bringing down the curtains in one harmony and unity.”

  • Toots Files $21 Million Lawsuit Against Bottle-Throwing Suspect

    Toots Is Not About To Let This Outrageous Incident Slide

    gty_toots_hibbert_and_the_maytals_jt_130519_msJamaican music legend Frederick “Toots” Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals fame has  filed a $21 million lawsuit in the bottle-throwing incident that took place during Toots’ performance at the Dominion Riverrock Festival on May 18th. Toots was in the middle of his set when he was hit in the head with a vodka bottle thrown by 19-year-old William Connor Lewis. The drunken moron was seen near the stage drinking out of the vodka bottle before he threw it causing a laceration to Toots’ forehead and face. Toots immediately and walked off the stage and did not return. He was forced to cancel the rest of his tour and return to Jamaica to recuperate from his injuries.

    Toots is suing Lewis for $1 million in compensatory damages and $20 million in punitive damages. The singer is stated to be in extreme emotional distress and the wound on his face has caused permanent scarring. On top of being sued, Lewis faces a felony charge of malicious wounding and has also been let go from Radford University. Though his lawyer states that Lewis is “very remorseful,” Toots has no plans to drop the lawsuit. Check out the video of the incident after the jump… (more…)

    Aidonia has been on the HYPE TV Top 20 countdown for 11 weeks now and he has finally taken the top spot! Aidonia knocks Tarrus Riley off the number one spot with his hit single, “Tip Pon Yuh Toe.”  The Dancehall single features some very, good looking women showing off their best dance moves on the beach. Now, these aren’t your regular two step dance moves so we advise not to watch this video at work!

    Red Bull Music Academy Recognizes Philip Smart

    How HC&F Studio Helped Lay The Foundation of NYC’S Reggae Scene

    Reggae Producer Philip Smart, has produced some of the biggest Reggae hits around and those hits have helped Reggae music flourish in so many ways. Not to mention, he created HC&F, the studio that become a national landmark for Reggae artists to make music. Many well known artists made HC&F a frequent pitstop while visiting New York including Shaggy, who recorded his first single there and Shabba Ranks who recorded, “Mr. Loverman,” there.

    Amongst others, Smart’s received lessons from King Tubby but he took his learnings and made them his own. Smart created his own sound and he mixed hit singles like Johnny Clarke’s, “None Shall Escape the Judgment.” 30 years later, Smart is still pushing the Reggae sounds that we all love out of HC&F. Red Bull Music Academy has recognized the great contribution that Smart has made to Reggae music and has paid tribute to him in their latest daily note issue. As their announcement puts it: “Founded in the 1970s by Lloyd “BullWackie” Barnes on White Plains Road in the Bronx, Wackie’s is considered by many to be the first significant Reggae studio and label in the United States. As a Kingston youth, Lloyd Barnes was entranced by the sound systems of Duke Reid and Coxsone Dodd. In 1967 he left Jamaica and came via England to New York, where he created his own sound system called Bullwackie’s Disco and would play at dances all around New York City.”  The collection features T-shirts, snapbacks and tank tops in multiple color festooned with images of Sugar Minott, Horace Andy, and of course the famous Wackies lion.
