  • HEAR THIS: Tanya Stephens “Fire Burning”

She’s Blazing Out Of Control. Send For The Strawberries And Cream!

You can’t say Tanya Stephens never warned you. Way back in the “Joyride” days, she was the one who said “You Nuh Ready Fi Dis yet.” And Tanya’s still talking the truth about women’s wants and needs while putting these tough-talking dudes to the test. Like the song said, “Hot fire deh ya but the wood nah blaze” etc. etc. Well some things never change, and Tanya’s fire is still hot. If you thought her latest song was some sort of remake of the Marcia Griffiths classic of the same name—think again. This fire is a whole ‘nother matter (and the beat is crazy). We’re talking foot pon shoulder, pedal-and-wheel, roast duck, lizard lap, bedrom mazuka. You get the picture. (more…)

  • WATCH THIS: Jimmy Cliff “Many Rivers To Cross” LIVE

40 Years After Starring In The Harder They Come, He’s Still Coming Hard

As Vivien Goldman observed in her excellent review of Jimmy Cliff’s recent unplugged set at Miss Lily’s Variety, for Mr. Cliff “every night is like a first night.” Standing three feet away from the 63-year-old living legend—watching him strum his guitar and feeling him nail every high note while perched on a bar stool with his cap to the back—was enough to make me forget half the live shows I’ve ever seen. Thankfully, LargeUpTV captured the moment for posterity, so you don’t need to be mad if you were unable to squeeze in there with the Miss Lily’s posse that night, or you somehow missed the live broadcast (including Pat McKay’s irie interview) on Sirius Satellite Radio. (more…)

  • HEAR THIS: Buju Banton “Set Up The Mic”

World Premiere of The Debut Single From Certified Boomshots Vol. 1

Recorded three years ago on the “Rapid Burst” riddim for Young Blood Records, “Set Up The Mic” started out as an on-the-spot freestyle while Buju Banton waited for the engineer to fix the levels at the start of a studio session. The engineer happened to press record, and the sounds captured that day were refreshingly raw, a glimpse of the champion DJ spitting lyrics off the head as if he were toasting around a sound system—a rare treat for Buju fans who have been missing the voice of the Gargamel. (more…)

  • The Xterminator Top 10

10 Reasons Why The Late Great Fattis Burrell’s Music Can’t Stop Play

This weekend brought word of another reggae legend’s passing. Phillip “Fattis” Burrell, the man behind the crucial dancehall and reggae label Xterminator Records—and before that, Vena Records—died on Saturday after suffering a heart attack two weeks ago. The prolific producer who helped launch the careers of Luciano, Sizzla, Sanchez and Pinchers will be keenly missed.

Everybody has their Fattis favorites; he recorded decades’ worth of great music with just about every significant singer and DJ in Jamaica. And we’re not even going to try and touch on the classics he produced for Vena. But when the roll is called up yonder, these tunes have got to be there. Run that… (more…)

  • WATCH THIS: Cham “Wine” Video

How You Get So Much Gum And She No Get None?

This particular wine has nothing to do with poppin’ bottles. No Marvin Gaye, chardonnay, or even rose. You can keep your French wine, and give us that Jamaican wine. It seems like Cham couldn’t be bothered to turn up for this video shoot, but these gals are so gifted, we’re not even mad. (more…)

  • No Bail For Kartel Today

The Werlboss Must Wait At Least Two Weeks To Learn His Fate

Yesterday Adidja Palmer, known to dancehall fans as Vybz Kartel, was offered $3 million Jamaican bail (U.S. $35,438) relating to the murder of Barrington “Bossie” Bryan. Today he and his legal team appeared in court again in relation to another murder case: that of Clive “Lizard” Williams, who was allegedly beaten to death on August 16. Kartel’s team had planned to seek bail in that case today, but according to the Jamaica Observer, no bail application was filed. Instead the court demanded that prosecutors present all their evidence first. In an exclusive interview with Boomshots, Kartel’s attorney dismissed reports of alleged video evidence of the killing as “a rumor.”  (more…)

  • Breaking News: Vybz Kartel Granted Bail

The Judge Says Bail…. But Babylon Still Says Jail — For Now

“It is quite difficult to secure bail for an individual who has more than one offense,” Christian Tavares-Finson told Boomshots yesterday. But then Kartel’s attorney added: “It is not impossible. We have done it before.” And now it looks like they’ve done it again. (more…)

  • Kartel’s Attorney Speaks On Jailbreak Hoax

Werlboss’s Lawyer Calls The Stories “An Attempt To Prejudice The Case”

Christian Tavares-Finson is a busy man. He’s the attorney who’s defending dancehall star Adidja Palmer aka Vybz Kartel aka The Werlboss, who has been charged with two murders, weapons violations, and ganja possession. But in this exclusive Boomshots interview, he took time out to dispel some misinformation that’s been flying around the internet today. As the old saying goes, a lie can run halfway round the world before the truth gets its Clarks on… (more…)
