WATCH THIS: Tommy Lee & Spartan Army “Real Bad Gyal” / “Di Creature” Official Video

    Di Creature Is Coming—Beware!

Tommy Lee is back and this time he’s bringing his whole Spartan Army: Jimbo Sparta, plus Tabeta Cshae, Stylish, and Destiny. [Click through the gallery above to get familiar.] So what if the “army” consists of just one other dude plus three hot girls? They’re still an army—plus they’re all demons. The Spartan Army just dropped a new double-barreled video for “Real Bad Gyal” and “Di Creature,” the lead singles from UIM Records’ eerie new riddim. At the top of the video, Stylish, Destiny, and Tabeta rock zombie gear as they break down what it means to be a “Real Bad Gyal,” from busting guns to, um, biting necks. (Sidebar: Did you ever make love to a demon?) In the second half of the clip, Tommy Lee and his sparring partner Jimbo Sparta take it back to the future on “Di Creature,” which looks more like a summer blockbuster than a typical music video. Actually it’s like watching a midnight movie double feature at the multiplex in less than five minutes: First a sexy lady vampire saga followed by an epic outer-space laser-beam battle flick. Gozu Musiq and Mental Chung Creative Lab took things to the next next level here. Just don’t let the scary masks and special effects fool you, Sparta ah no plaything. “We appear like Katrina / Worse than Hiroshima.” (Click Video After The Jump… (more…)

Jay-Z Samples Sizzla on “Magna Carta Holy Grail”

Jigga’s Track “Crown” is only the latest rap jam to rework Kalonji’s hit “Solid As A Rock”

Whether or not you bought a new Samsung phone, you’re probably listening to Magna Carta Holy Grail right now. Jay-Z’s 12th studio album  leaked shortly after his exclusive app crashed, short-circuiting a multi-million-dollar promo plan. Oh well—meet the #NewRules, same as the #OldNewRules. More importantly, you may already have noticed that track #8, a song called “Crown,” opens with a long, ghostly slowed-down sample of  Sizzla’s 2002 hit “Solid As A Rock,” taken from his classic Bobby Digital–produced album, Da Real Thing. The Jay-Z tune, Produced by Travi$ Scott and 16-year-old newcomer WundaGirl, has folks buzzing about Magna Carter dissing sports agent Scott Boras. But for reggae lovers, it’s all about the continuing trend of major rap releases sampling dancehall tunes. Like many top dancehall artists, Sizzla has collaborated with rap stars in the past—most notably on his duets with Foxy Brown and Dipset. But more than any other song in Sizzla’s vast catalog, “Solid As A Rock” remains his best known release in hip-hop circles. Who can’t relate to a tune whose first words are “They can’t keep a good man down”? Click through the gallery above to revisit all the various rap versions of this Sizzla classic.

Jah Messenger Chats With Reshma B About Bob Marley’s Reincarnation

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard new music from Luciano. But the crucial roots reggae vocalist now on tour and releasing new singles like “You Can Try,” which continues his tradition of constructive roots music with constructive messages. We caught up with Jah Messenger during a recent trip to Phillip Smart’s HC&F Studios. He was working on a new tune with producer Derrick Barnett—former bass player of the legendary Sagittarius band—which sounds like a next certified Boomshot. After the recording session was wrapped up, Luciano sat down with the ReggaeGirlAboutTown for some deep reasoning on topics ranging from the state of modern reggae music, the future of mankind as measured by drooping trousers, and whether Snoop Lion really is Bob Marley reincarnated. Video After The Jump… (more…)

  • Assassin’s Yeezus Verse Decoded

Even Some of Kanye’s Collaborators Seem To Be A Little Confused…
    Assassin

This is Assassin, aka Agent Sasco… the respected Jamaican dancehall artist who spits a verse on “I’m In It,” a track from Kanye West’s dancehall-peppered album Yeezus. For those who have been following his career over the past 12 years, the high-profile feature on the most anticipated rap release of 2013 thus far is an unexpected treat. But for the rest of the music industry it’s a source of confusion. Take, for instance, this article from MySpace.com, a reputable publication that served up a major fail in its entry on I’m In It. The site apparently had no idea who Jeffrey Campbell was despite extensive coverage of the fact that Assassin was featured on this particular track. OK, maybe it’s not fair to expect American journalists to know dancehall artist’s government names off the top of their head, but there is this thing called google that’s really helpful when it comes to telling reggae stars from shoe designers. Here’s what MySpace wrote about the writing credits to “I’m In It”: “Like some writing credits on Yeezus, the paper trail leading back to people can be misleading. While we’re unsure who exactly the Jeffrey Ethan Campbell is that’s credited alongside Jill Scott and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon on ‘I’m In It,’ but all signs point to the shoe designer. Stranger things have happened in the world of the West, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Campbell was hanging in the studio with Yeezy and offered an idea on how to shape the song.” SMFH. If you think the name game is confusing, just imagine trying to interpret Assassin’s rapid fire patois flow. Lyrical Breakdown After The Jump… (more…)

Year in and year out, the BET Awards have become known for show-stopping performances. Next up was Beenie Man doing “Who Am I” and “Rum and Red Bull” and then Elephant Man came through in a zebra-print jacket to shut the whole show down in true Energy God style and fashion.
