    A Reggae Legend’s Daughter Creating Conscious Reverberations

    Forty years ago Maxwell Livingston Smith, better known as Max Romeo, released his classic album War Inna Babylon on Island Records. The album featured classic hits like “Chase The Devil”  (which would later be sampled by Kanye West for Jay Z’s song “Lucifer”). This song sent fans into a frenzy with its balance of  spiritual and conscious lyrics over the Lee “Scratch” Perry–produced riddim. Max Romeo “put on his iron shirt” and chased the Devil out of Earth with his lyrical prowess—and he’s still making music to this day. Now, four decades later, it should come as no surprise that his daughter is stepping forward along a similar  path. Azana Makeeda Smith, aka Xana Romeo, brings a unique feminine fierceness with her incendiary lyrics. She has a great vocal range and her enunciation is clear and precise, adding to the palpable power of her music.     Reshma B, the UK-based music journalist, showed off her design skills at Caribbean Fashion Week in Kingston, Jamaica. ReshmaB Chains—recently included on Mass Appeal‘s round-up of New Streetwear Brands Who Are Killing it Right Now—made their runway debut at CFW’s Friday kick off. Pulse top model Oraine Barrett walked the runway, while three-time Vogue cover girl Jeneil Williams was spotted wearing a pair of ReshmaB earrings in the front row. Designer Reshma B capped the night by taking to the catwalk rocking a bright orange Day-Glo “Wah Gwan” chain, flashing her trademark peace sign, and snapping shots of the experience with a selfie stick.     Supreme Clothing is the ultimate in downtown NY hipter chic. In the past they’ve collaborated with the likes of BAPE and Clarks to keep you laced in the freshest gear on the streets. Supreme has announced an exciting new collabo with Wackies, the legendary Bronx Reggae label. As their announcement puts it: “Founded in the 1970s by Lloyd “BullWackie” Barnes on White Plains Road in the Bronx, Wackie’s is considered by many to be the first significant Reggae studio and label in the United States. As a Kingston youth, Lloyd Barnes was entranced by the sound systems of Duke Reid and Coxsone Dodd. In 1967 he left Jamaica and came via England to New York, where he created his own sound system called Bullwackie’s Disco and would play at dances all around New York City.”  The collection features T-shirts, snapbacks and tank tops in multiple color festooned with images of Sugar Minott, Horace Andy, and of course the famous Wackies lion.
