North America’s premier dub festival kicks off tonight Sept 19 with Lee Scratch Perry & Subatomic Sound System in DC at the Howard Theater and Deadly Dragon & Reggae Rajahs in NYC at the Delancey. Live performances, educational workshops, and a glimpse into the creation of dub music runs until Monday Sept 23rd. Rihanna Joins in Cropover Festivities & Becomes the Main Attraction
Cropover has been taking place in Barbados since 1688 and since then it has become quite the exciting celebration. And even more alluring when Rihanna became a regular attendee of the festival. Last year, Rihanna turned heads with her racy dance moves and all red and gold outfit but this year she took a sexy but more classy approach. The singer attended Cropover in a bejeweled bikini with a feathered headdress, fishnets and some high tops Adidas. Though, the outfit only covered the necessary parts of her body, Rihanna looked refreshingly, beautiful with her new haircut and genuine smile. Bunji Can’t Shake The Carnival Feeling
Let’s face it, Carnival is the greatest show on Earth. I mean come on, days of drinking, partying and all around good vibes what more do you need? It’s because of all that niceness that when it’s over you’re left with a feeling of serious withdrawal and the dreaded “Carnival Tabanca” sets in. I-Octane Promises to Shell Down Sumfest
Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night is set to take place on July 25th and it has been announced that I-Octane will be the closing act. I-Octane has performed at Reggae Sumfest for the past three years but this will be the first time he will actually be the one to shut the show down!
I-Octane’s first performance featured a crowd of 5 people but as his act started moving to a later time in the festival, the crowd got larger. This year I-Octane expects to have an extremely large crowd and he will be giving a performance like no other. Though very few details have been released about his performance, he has stated the following: “This will not be just a 2:30 performance for me. I am coming with a different perspective this year. It is not an ego thing for me anymore. This year will be more like bringing down the curtains in one harmony and unity.”

Dub vets Scientist and the Roots Radics took over this year’s Dub Champion Fest—Amy Wachtel reports
Like any respectable “creature of the night,” I got to BB Kings just before the bewitching hour of midnight, an appropriate hour for both vampires and night nurses. Deadly Dragon’s sound system filled the air with the sounds of drum, bass & dub recordings. Remembering that Scientist’s jackhammer style of mixing tends to be on the LOUD side, I uncharacteristically put in a pair of earplugs. I even carried an extra set. On the second of five nights at this year’s Dub Champion Festival, the iconic dub chemist Scientist (seen above in NYC, Fall 1988) and dub innovators the Roots Radics band blessed the stage and, joined by the great reggae and dancehall vocalist Johnny Osbourne, put on a show for the ages. Before the concert even began, the energy was palpable throughout the subterranean building as anticipation was through the roof. This was the kind of reggae show that crossed, and then collapsed, the Time-Space continuum by bringing out veterans and old timers, alongside a more current regime of reggae aficionados and dubheads.
