Dancehall Emperor Makes a Cameo Appearance in the new A$AP Mob Visuals
The A$AP Mob may come from Harlem, but they’ve always showed love for Jamaican flavor. A$AP Rocky’s mixtape hit “Pe$o” had a chopped-and-screwed raggamuffin-style hook. Now comes A$AP Ferg with the smash hit named after dancehall emperor Shabba Ranks. It’s clear that A$AP Ferg has nuff respect for Shabba’s swag: “Eight gold rings like I’m Shabba Ranks” / “Two bad bitches like I’m Shabba Ranks” / “One gold tooth like I’m Shabba Ranks” And Rocky chats a few lines of Shabba’s hit “Ting A Ling” on his verse. The video dropped today and yes, Mr. Loverman does make a cameo appearance. Let’s hope he hops on a remix too. It’s only right. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Jay-Z Samples Sizzla on “Magna Carta Holy Grail”
Jigga’s Track “Crown” is only the latest rap jam to rework Kalonji’s hit “Solid As A Rock”
Whether or not you bought a new Samsung phone, you’re probably listening to Magna Carta Holy Grail right now. Jay-Z’s 12th studio album leaked shortly after his exclusive app crashed, short-circuiting a multi-million-dollar promo plan. Oh well—meet the #NewRules, same as the #OldNewRules. More importantly, you may already have noticed that track #8, a song called “Crown,” opens with a long, ghostly slowed-down sample of Sizzla’s 2002 hit “Solid As A Rock,” taken from his classic Bobby Digital–produced album, Da Real Thing. The Jay-Z tune, Produced by Travi$ Scott and 16-year-old newcomer WundaGirl, has folks buzzing about Magna Carter dissing sports agent Scott Boras. But for reggae lovers, it’s all about the continuing trend of major rap releases sampling dancehall tunes. Like many top dancehall artists, Sizzla has collaborated with rap stars in the past—most notably on his duets with Foxy Brown and Dipset. But more than any other song in Sizzla’s vast catalog, “Solid As A Rock” remains his best known release in hip-hop circles. Who can’t relate to a tune whose first words are “They can’t keep a good man down”? Click through the gallery above to revisit all the various rap versions of this Sizzla classic. -

Assassin’s Yeezus Verse Decoded
Even Some of Kanye’s Collaborators Seem To Be A Little Confused…
This is Assassin, aka Agent Sasco… the respected Jamaican dancehall artist who spits a verse on “I’m In It,” a track from Kanye West’s dancehall-peppered album Yeezus. For those who have been following his career over the past 12 years, the high-profile feature on the most anticipated rap release of 2013 thus far is an unexpected treat. But for the rest of the music industry it’s a source of confusion. Take, for instance, this article from MySpace.com, a reputable publication that served up a major fail in its entry on I’m In It. The site apparently had no idea who Jeffrey Campbell was despite extensive coverage of the fact that Assassin was featured on this particular track. OK, maybe it’s not fair to expect American journalists to know dancehall artist’s government names off the top of their head, but there is this thing called google that’s really helpful when it comes to telling reggae stars from shoe designers. Here’s what MySpace wrote about the writing credits to “I’m In It”: “Like some writing credits on Yeezus, the paper trail leading back to people can be misleading. While we’re unsure who exactly the Jeffrey Ethan Campbell is that’s credited alongside Jill Scott and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon on ‘I’m In It,’ but all signs point to the shoe designer. Stranger things have happened in the world of the West, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Campbell was hanging in the studio with Yeezy and offered an idea on how to shape the song.” SMFH. If you think the name game is confusing, just imagine trying to interpret Assassin’s rapid fire patois flow. Lyrical Breakdown After The Jump… (more…) -
