  • Kanye West’s Yeezus Full Up of Dancehall Samples

Popcaan, Beenie Man, Capleton and Assassin All Featured ProminentlyIMG_8496

Last night an A-list hip-hop crowd—including Jay-Z, Beyonce, Q-Tip, and Busta Rhymes—came out on a rainy Monday night and packed into Milk Studios in Manhattan’s meatpacking district for a chance to hear Kanye West’s long-awaited sixth solo album, Yeezus. Kanye spoke at length before pressing play as fly graphics of air force bombers were projected on the walls. He talked about production by Daft Punk and Young Chop. He talked about guest verses by Chief Keef, King Louie, and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. He talked about Rick Rubin’s crucial role in shaping the final project. But one thing he didn’t have to say—because it became very clear after hearing his hard-edged album—is that “Mercy” was not a fluke, and Kanye is becoming a major dancehall fan. We should have known when we heard that subtle Barrington Levy sample on the remix of “I Don’t Like.” Now here comes Yeezus, which has ten tracks in total, four of which feature prominent vocal samples of dancehall stars, including Popcaan (a chopped and screwed portion of his intro to Pusha T’s “Blocka”), Assassin (a new verse), Capleton (“Forward Inna Them Clothes“), and this tune “Send It Up,” featuring a classic Beenie Man cut. Gullyside And D-Block Link Up With Musical Masquerade
    mavado-ft-jadakiss-Just-Like-Magic
Musical Masquerade likes his privacy. A mysterious figure who wears a creepy mask to conceal his identity in photos, MM says he’s worked as a songwriter and producer for years. For reasons that remain unclear he recently decided to start anew, pushing out his polished pop-leaning dancehall productions under a different identity. “There are red tape and yellow tape and politics that affect music,” the enigmatic producer stated in a recent interview. “So I decided to take on a new challenge and create something new without using my past successes and projects as the spear head. Snort of like Snoop Dogg versus Snoop Lion. Just a new path.” His forthcoming project, Elements of Reggae, has already given us the hit single “No Other Like You” by Rayvon and Red Fox. Now comes another collaboration that brings together dancehall and hip-hop artists of the highest ranks with a next-level sound. On “Just Like Magic” Mavado sings a melodic refrain for the ladies then Kiss steps in to spit a hot 16. “It’s always a great pleasure working with people who are professional and who aim to make the best music,” said Musical Masquerade. “The collaboration came about from an idea to blend the powerful, unique and unmistakable voices from reggae and hip hop and put them together on a reggae track. From there we reached out to the respective camps, so much respect to Skeng and Gullyside Mansion, We The Best Family and to Gusto and D Block for seeing the vision.”  Audio After The Jump… (more…)

  • WATCH THIS: Kriss Kross ft. Supercat “Alright”

Let’s Rewind Back To A Time When EveryTING Was Alright
    KrissKrossSupercat
As 90s Hip-Hop fans mourn the sudden death of Kriss Kross’s Chris Kelly, we’re set adrift on a memory bliss of the days when the Don Dada and the Mac Daddy were labelmates on Columbia Records. As soon as they dropped “Jump,” the kids from ATL with the Totally Krossed Out gear became the biggest thing in rap for a hot minute. Quiet as it’s kept, their success is what helped jump-start Jermaine Dupri’s SoSoDef empire. True heads recall that Super Cat appeared on an official remix of the tune, back when hip-hop reggae was a fresh exciting concept. But it wasn’t until Kriss Kross’s sophomore set that they had the opportunity to make a proper single with the Wild Apache, who came through big like he always does. (“Alright” ranks right up there with the slept-on hook Cat did for Sugar Ray’s “Fly.”) Cat and Kriss Kross even shot a video, which you need to watch right now. Thank us later.  Video After The Jump…

  • Pusha T Explains His Love for Reggae

King Push Explains That His Love For Reggae Music Is Not Just A Fadpush

Reggae has sometimes been considered the long lost brother of Rap. Both started from similar plights and often share the same message of getting out the ghetto and making a better life for yourself. Because of this we see many Rap artists reach out to reggae and dancehall artist either to help boost a record or to increase their fan base. In most cases it’s just a marketing maneuver, but there are times when the artist does it for the pure love and respect for the music.  (more…)
