Snoop Lion, Major Lazer & Mavado Mash Up Viceland at SXSW

Last week at SXSW, Snoop Dogg made history as he headlined Cashmere Agency’s “LIONFEST: A celebration of Reincarnated” at VICELAND, performing for the first time as Snoop Lion. In front of 2,000 fans, Snoop showed off his new reggae/dancehall repertoire, delivering songs like “So Long,” “La La La,” “No Guns Allowed,” and “Lighters Up,” from his forthcoming Reincarnated album (set for an April 23 release on RCA / Sony). There’s also a free app for the Reincarnated album that you can download now. Diplo & Major Lazer were also on the bill, getting the crowd hyped by tossing confetti, stage diving and crowd surfing in a plastic bubble. Shortly after Major Lazer, the Gully God himself took the stage to perform a set of his hits, but don’t vex cause you weren’t there—the Boomshots massive gets the live footage first so hit the jump right away. Video After The Jump… (more…)

  • Snoop Rocks Lionfest at SXSW

    Snoop Rocks Lionfest at SXSW

Snoop Lion Premieres Reincarnated Then Mashes Up SXSW w Major Lazer & Mavado

Yesterday was a big day for the man called Snoop Lion. First his film Reincarnated had its official U.S. premiere at the Paramount Theater in Austin Texas. (The film opens nationwide today; check SnoopLion.com for show times and locations.) Then later that night he headlined Lionfest at SXSW’s VICEland stage, sharing the bill with Major Lazer—the team that produced his Reincarnated album—and Mavado, who collabos with Snoop on the tune “Lighters Up,” as well as DJ Max Glazer of BKNY’s Federation Sound. After all the debates, the skeptics, and the naysayers had spoken their minds, it all came down to Snoop Lion showing what he could do on stage for the first time ever. And the capacity crowd was definitely showing love to the Lion, who transformed into Snoop Dogg and back again many times through the night. Aside from performing cuts from the Reincarnated album like “La La La,” “Here Comes The King,” “Lighters Up,” and “No Guns Allowed,” Snoop also kicked reggae remixes of classics like “Gin & Juice,” “Drop It Like it’s Hot” and “Young Wild & Free.” He also covered Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved” as well as “Funkin’ For Jamaica” as well as bringing out Daz and Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound for some straight-up Death Row /DPG rap jams. But Lionfest wasn’t limited to reggae or rap— Snoop even did straight-up versions of “Jump Around” by House of Pain and Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll.” Check the photo gallery above. • WATCH THIS: Anthony B “Storm Winds” Live

The DJ’s Song Takes On New Meaning
    Anthony B-BOOM
Anthony B. knows a thing or two about “Storms Winds,” no doubt. Performing the song at Brooklyn’s One Mic event last week was a moment of triumph. Along with a few band mates, the artist was arrested on ganja charges a few weeks back. His lawyer has since released a statement that they plan to fight these charges. The struggle continues, but at least on stage he knows he’s free. Video After The Jump… (more…)

  • Lady Saw “Heels On” Live in Miami

Muma Saw Gets The Fans Involved
    LadySawBoomshots
When Lady Saw took the stage at the Reggae World Unity Fest in Miami the other day, all that talk about turning into a gospel artist went right out the window. Make no mistake, Saw will come to the Lord one day. But right now, she’s keeping it raw. When it was time to do her latest boomshot “Heels On,” Saw invited a couple from the crowd to show them how to get their groove on. Step one, lay the man on the stage. Step two, get into position. Step three, fling it dung. And don’t let Saw catch you slackin’, or she might have to show you how it’s done. Video After The Jump… (more…)

  • Win Tickets to See Femi Kuti Live in NYC

The Afrobeat Legend Will Rock Webster Hall this Saturday—Don’t You Want To Catch Him Live?
    Femi4x6finalBOOMSHOTS
Femi Kuti was born in London and grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. He is the eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer and revolutionary icon Fela Anikulalpo Kuti. Femi inherited a gift for music and became a member of his father’s band, and later formed his own band, called Positive Force with Dele Sosimi, who formerly played keyboards with Fela. Like his late father, Femi Kuti plays an infectious style of music known as Afrobeat which fuses elements of jazz, funk, and traditional African music. Femi has been signed to major labels and nominated for Grammys, but like his father, he believes that “music is the weapon of the future.” In other words, he uses his music fearlessly as a means of speaking out on issues of social and political justice. He will be performing in New York this Saturday at Webster Hall, one of the city’s greatest music venues. Because we know this is a show that Boomshots readers will not want to miss, we’ve reserved a pair of tickets—and you’ve got a chance to win.  Video & Contest Details After The Jump…

  • I-Octane Pon Radio Lily “Me Ting Global, So De Ting Set”

I-Octane Pon Radio Lily “Me Ting Global, So De Ting Set”

Octane Passes Through The Strictly Boomshots Show—It Siiiick

If you didn’t know I-Octane was on a mission to Conquer the Globe, consider this your first and last warning. The dancehall singjay who’s been blazing Jamrock for the past seven years or so has set his sights on outernational acclaim. Conquer The Globe is actually the name of Octane’s new production company, and if you’ve been paying any attention to his career thus far, then you know Octane is an extrordinarily focused individual who usually accomplishes what he sets out to do. Early last year he released his debut album, Crying To The Nation, an outstanding suite of tunes that was critically acclaimed but criminally slept-on by the general public due to lackluster promotion and limited radio play. At the close of 2012, he blessed his fans with a free mixtape called Thankful, which served notice that Octane. Since then he’s dropped yet another banger called “Gal A Gimmi Bun” that’s rocking the streets of Kingston as you read this. Just before heading down to Rebel Salute, Octane passed through the Strictly Boomshots show for some reasoning and a wicked freestyle or two. It Siiiiick.  Audio and Video After The Jump… (more…)

Last Night Come In Like A Stage Show

Last night Miss Lily’s Variety and Melvin’s Juice Box celebrated its first anniversary in fine style with an all-day party that was broadcast live on RadioLily.com. The place was packed with reggae royalty from early out. Dean Fraser and Tarrus Riley mingled with Clive Chin and Carol Dodd, who blessed the place with some amazing never-before-heard Studio One rarities (including “In My Fathers House” and “Ungodly King” by Dennis Brown, a new version of “Gorgon” by Cornell Campbell, “Mix It Up” by J.D. Smoothe, and the original “Shank-I-Sheck” instrumental by Roy Burroughs). Noel Alphonso, son of the late great Roland Alphonso (whose birthday was also last night) was in the place along with the whole Miss Lily’s family to enjoy one-of-a-kind live performances by the one and only Johnny Osbourne and Tarrus Riley—up close and personal with DJ Max Glazer at the controls. Video After The Jump… (more…)
