Something For the Empresses From Stephen Marley’s Eldest Son
Yesterday Bob Marley would have celebrated his 68th birthday. Today we get to hear a song from his grandson Jo Mersa, Stephen Marley’s eldest son, and a member of the Ghetto Youths Int’l family. Jo’s sound is very much next-generation, but as a raggamuffin youth he sure knows how to DJ his way around a love song. Time to get comfortable with this rebel. Audio After The Jump… (more…)

“Justice” is not just standout cut from The Melody Makers’ 1989 album One Bright Day, it’s also the name of Ziggy’s daughter. On the new live album Ziggy Marley in Concert—available on iTunes next Tuesday, December 18—Ziggy blends “Justice” with one of his father’s greatest songs, which happens to be one of the few Bob Marley classics that Marley did not write. Bob Marley Class Will Be In Session at NYU
Sign Up This Week If You’re Ready For Some Higher Education
Remember “Babylon System,” that cut off Bob Marley’s Survival album, in which the Tuff Gong sings about how the downpressor man is forever “Building church and university / Deceiving the people continually /Graduatin’ thieves and murderers / Suckin’ the blood of the sufferers.” Well chances are he wasn’t singing about the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts—and he definitely wasn’t singing about Vivien Goldman, aka the @PunkProfessor. She is one of the few Marley experts who actually spent significant time with Bob, both in her native London and in Jamaica. She’s also the author of The Book of Exodus, a definitive study of one of Marley’s most seminal works. She’s even gotten props from Bunny Wailer. Yes, the Honorable Neville Livingstone called her an “esteemed journalist of this time.” So if any university prof is gonna “tell the children the truth,” she’s a good bet. Goldman will be teaching a course on Bob Marley starting next month, and it’s open to all students—not just NYU enrolees. But the deadline to sign up is at the end of this week, so don’t sleep! This Monday she passed through the StrictlyBoomshots show on Radio Lily.com to drop some knowledge on Marley and post-colonialism. Those who have ears, let them hear. You Won’t Believe How This One Was Created
Rihanna has always had a unique sense of fashion—from pairing chucks with a girly, pink dress to a bustier top and high-waisted shorts, her style has caught everyone’s attention from day one. And of course her vision has paved a path for millions of fans to follow. But RiRi’s best looks are those that can’t be duplicated. Case in point: the Bob Marley dress Rihanna wore during last weekend’s SNL performance. Boomshots did a little bit of digging and found out that the dress was a one of one. Danny Sims’ Hit Parade
Paying Respects To Bob Marley’s Former Manager And “Godfather”
The New York Times called the late Danny Sims “one of the people most responsible for Bob Marley’s success who has gotten the least amount of notice for it.” Sims himself described his relationship with Marley thus: “I guess I was his Godfather—that is in the street sense—I looked out for him.” Of course the Tuff Gong could take care of himself, but Sims definitely helped Marley reach new audiences through his connections in the R&B world. In his Marley biography, Catch A Fire, Timothy White writes that “Sims was the man who would put Bob’s unique sound on the airwaves. Yet he was always trying to dissuade Bob from actually recording reggae—and ‘message’ reggae at that. The chief way he saw Bob Marley being a money-maker was, in his own words, ‘in a rhythm-and-blues, Top Forty style.’ As Sims himself boasted to a reporter from the Village Voice: ‘I discouraged Bob from doing the revolutionary stuff. I’m a commercial guy. I want to sell songs to thirteen-year-old girls, not to guys throwing spears.’” Whatever else you may think of him, cllearly Danny Sims was not afraid to speak his mind. Born in Mississippi and raised in Chicago, Sims’ entry into the music business came with the opening of Sapphire, the first black club in Manhattan. He formed a promotions company, Hemisphere, at the behest of Johnny Nash. The companywas responsible for all the top stars of the day – Sammy Davis, Brook Benton, Ben E. King, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding – he worked with everyone from Mohammed Ali to Malcolm X. Hemisphere later absorbed Dinah Washington’s Queens label creating one of the biggest African-American agencies of the time. In the 1960s Danny formed a label with Nash called JODA, later to become JAD, and it was to this label that both the Wailers and Bob Marley signed. The Wailers would often stay at Danny’s house in Jamaica while he was away. Fellow performers such as Gloria Gaynor, Lloyd Price, Betty Wright and English musician Rabbit (Marley, Free, the Who) also found a home on JAD. Sims died last month at the age of 75, and his contributions to music are still not fully understood. Here’s a quick overview of the man’s musical legacy. Audio After The Jump…

Peep The New Visuals From Big Gongzilla x Skrillex
Skrillex just premiered the video for his collab with Junior Gong, and it’s a brilliant piece of work. Touching on the foreclosure crisis, the video—directed by Tony T. Datis—serves as a reminder that there are forces within us that are even more powerful than the economic pressures afflicting the whole world—if only we can tap into them. A Native American shaman in the suburbs beats the medicine drums and helps a young brave connect with the spirit world, striking fear into the hearts of greedy real estate developers. This video has a surreal, thought-provoking quality that ups the song’s artistic ante. Plus the special effects are sure to look really cool when you’re baked. What more could you ask for? Pass that fire.

“Emancipate Yourselves From Mental Slavery” And Let Every Day Be Emancipation Day
On this day in 1838, Queen Victoria’s Slavery Abolition Act ended slavery throughout the British Empire—decades before President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation abolishing slavery in the United States. Governmental decrees are all well and good, but as Bob Marley reminds us in his timeless classic “Redemption Song,” “none but ourselves can free our minds.” As Jamaica approaches its 50th year of independence, the Gong’s words ring truer than ever.
