Yee Haw! Spice Kicks Off Dream Weekend New York Cowgirl Style

The Queen of the Dancehall Live & Direct in NYC

By the time Vybz Kartel shouted out Dream Weekend on his smash 2011 hit “Summertime,” the Negril-based super fete was already known as one of the biggest and wildest parties in the entire Caribbean. Catering to a sucker-free clientele who know how to tun up in style, Dream Weekend has evolved into a full-fledged festival and expanded its brand from Negril to New York City. The opening night of Dream Weekend New York 2024 was hosted by none other than the Queen of Dancehall herself, Spice. Despite the rainy weather, Manhattan’s Club Musica was packed with hardcore yet upscale party people raving to the sounds of DJ Kevin Crown and Platinum Kids Sound. The festivities happened to fall on June 29th, the same day Spice released “Round & Round,” her brand new cowboy-themed collab with Busta Rhymes. Queen Spice was in rare form, passing out cowboy hats to get everybody in the mood to shout “Yee Haw!” Photos & Video After The Jump…

  • PREMIERE: Ricky Blaze Presents The “Boom Riddim”

PREMIERE: Ricky Blaze Presents The “Boom Riddim”

Featuring Mr. Easy, Mr. Lexx, Cecile, and Majah Hype as “Mitzy”

Everything about Ricky Blaze’s brand-new Boom Riddim, which Boomshots proudly premieres today, screams classic dancehall. Just take a look at the artwork. If you don’t know why the yellow coloring is lighter at the corners of the square then you don’t know much about true dancehall culture. When you carry mad disco 12-inches inside your crate, and spend years flipping through them in the heat of the dance, sometimes the corners will get a little bit worn. As a matter of fact, that worn look is actually a badge of respect. Just as long as the disc inside stays nice and crispy, you’re good. Speaking of which, let’s get to the music itself, which is reminiscent of the late 80s early 90s that used to rock BK’s Biltmore Ballroom, fresh from yard. Ricky Blaze cooked up this particular digital riddim in his East Flatbish basement studio—the same humble soundlab that birthed timeless sounds like Gyptian’s “Hold Yuh,” Kartel’s “Touch a Button Nuh” and Ding Dong’s “Badman Forward”—and he knew just the right artists to voice for this particular mood and feel. So he reached out to veterans like Mr. Easy “Like Sunday Morning” himself as well as Mr. Lexx aka Lexxus and dancehall’s original Bad Gyal, Cecile. There’s also a next bad gyal in the juggling—she goes by the name of Mitzy. You’re just going to have to listen with your own ears to see what she’s dealing with.  No more long talking, time to let Mr. Blaze Blaze it up.   Audio After The Jump…

Chronixx Celebrates ‘Chronology’ at Celebrate Brooklyn!

Reshma B Kicks It With The Chron Dada

It still seems strange to call Chronixx’s album Chronology a debut. From Start a Fyah to Dread & Terrible to Roots & Chalice, the Steam Ministah has put in much work over the years. But last Friday, the artist’s first official album was released to digital streaming services everywhere and topped the iTunes Reggae chart. A fitting place to celebrate the moment was at the Celebrate Brooklyn! festival in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park where a massive gathering took place last night, filling the outdoor venue to capacity with many more listening outside. Chronixx and the Zinc Fence Redemption band rose to the occasion, delivering a blazing set of hits, punctuated with speeches like this one: “Dancehall was the only platform for artists who chose to talk the truth. Because every other music was purely entertainment, and the music coming out of the ghettos in the 1960s started to become very rooted in spirituality. The modern world didn’t like it, the radio didn’t play it, so you had people in Jamaica who created a thing called the sound system—which is still the only good system on this planet. Every other system shall fail. And the only system… Cause in the beginning was the word, and a word is a sound. So the sound system is the first system God create. You see it? And every other system shall fall and leave the sound system.” After a performance to remember, Chronixx sat down backstage to reason with Reshma B Video After The Jump… (more…)

  • EXCLUSIVE: Busy Signal Addresses The Disruption of His U.S. Debut

EXCLUSIVE: Busy Signal Addresses The Disruption of His U.S. Debut

The Turf President’s Historic Set Got Cut Short at Groovin in the Park—We Spoke With Him Right Afterwards

Yesterday Busy Signal made history by performing his first ever show in the U.S.A. at this year’s Groovin In The Park festival. But re-writing history is not always an easy road—sometimes there are a few potholes along the way. On this day one of the most dreamed-about days of Busy’s life turned out to be a somewhat bittersweet reality. Bolting onto the stage Busy opened with his breakout track, “Step Out.” Bouncing around the stage like a ball of energy, he segued into “Nah Go Jail Again” before transitioning into a moment of thanksgiving as Buju Banton’s voice rang out in the park “Oh our Father, Who Art In Zion…” while Busy counted his blessings for being given the opportunity to perform for his American fans. “A foreign mi deh,” he said with pride. “Big foreign!” This was the moment he had been waiting for all his life—a moment that over 30,000 people spent their money to witness, some traveling in from all over the world. His fans wanted to witness the moment when Busy’s incredible journey—building his career for over 12 years, being released from prison, getting his visa back, getting an approved work permit—came to fulfillment. “You are looking at a walking miracle,” he told the audience, almost in disbelief. But just when it seemed things couldn’t get any better, they took a sudden turn for the worse.  Video and Full Story After The Jump… (more…)
