Let’s Rewind Back To A Time When EveryTING Was Alright
As 90s Hip-Hop fans mourn the sudden death of Kriss Kross’s Chris Kelly, we’re set adrift on a memory bliss of the days when the Don Dada and the Mac Daddy were labelmates on Columbia Records. As soon as they dropped “Jump,” the kids from ATL with the Totally Krossed Out gear became the biggest thing in rap for a hot minute. Quiet as it’s kept, their success is what helped jump-start Jermaine Dupri’s SoSoDef empire. True heads recall that Super Cat appeared on an official remix of the tune, back when hip-hop reggae was a fresh exciting concept. But it wasn’t until Kriss Kross’s sophomore set that they had the opportunity to make a proper single with the Wild Apache, who came through big like he always does. (“Alright” ranks right up there with the slept-on hook Cat did for Sugar Ray’s “Fly.”) Cat and Kriss Kross even shot a video, which you need to watch right now. Thank us later. Video After The Jump…

HEAR THIS: Mavado ft. Akon & Rick Ross “Rise Up”
The Gully Gad Drops A Gift For The Sufferahs and the Warriors
Our Gullyside connects just blessed us with a heatrock produced by Jerry Wonder. “A song like this is a gift for the streets, an anthem for the downpressed, sufferahs and warriors in times like these.” Word is this is just a set up for the “real bomb” in June—Mavado x Future x Ace Hood. For now, hold this. “I know they wanna see me fall / I know they wanna see me fail / That’s why I go so hard / Only the real will prevail…” Audio After The Jump… (more…) -
Melanie Fiona Rocks Tobago Jazz Experience
The Grammy-Winning R&B Star Channels Her Caribbean Roots
Last night the heavens opened up on the island of Tobago, just as the Tobago Jazz Experiencec was trying to kick off World Music Night featuring Jamaican reggae legend Freddie McGregor, Fayann Lyons and Bunji Garlin—Trinidad & Tobago’s Royal Couple of soca—and internationally acclaimed R&B star Melanie Fiona. But this Guayanese girl from Toronoto was not about to miss her chance to perform for the Tobago massive. So the two-time Grammy winner strapped on her mile-high Louboutins and put on the show of a lifetime. She even dipped into her old dancehall catalog and blessed the place with a Supa Dups selection from back in the day when she used to go by the name Syren Hall. Musical thing called “Somebody Come Get Me Before I Kill This Man,” and Melanie sings it like she really means it. Just after stepping off stage, Melanie explained why Syren Hall will always be a part of her. Video After The Jump… (more…) -

HEAR THIS: Snoop Lion “Reincarnated” Full Album Preview
The Lion’s Coming With That Heat
We’ve been hearing about this album that Snoop Lion has been working on with Major Lazer for months now, and today Reincarnated is finally here. Was it worth the hype? After hearing the full thing, we have to say yes. There are definitely some bangers on this album that real reggae fans need in their life. Standout tracks include “Fruit Juice” featuring Mr. Vegas, “Smoke The Weed” featuring Collie Buddz, and “Remedy” featuring Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes. Oh, and how could I forget “Boulevard” featuring Jahdan Blakkamore? But don’t take my word for it, check the full album preview and then go to iTunes, buy Reincarnated, and support reggae music. FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Beirut “Nantes”
Where Have We Heard This Tune Before?
Today’s Flashback Friday is particularly special in that it features a song that most of us have never heard before until recently, thanks in part to Snoop Lion’s lastest single “No Guns Allowed.” Snoop’s plea for an end to gun violence really struck a nerve with listeners—not only for its subject matter but for its simple, hypnotic instrumental that was built off a sample of the song “Nantes” by the indie band Beirut’s 2007 album The Flying Club Cup. Nantes
was founded by New Mexico native Zach Condon, who recorded the debut album Gulag Orkestar in his bedroom. Major Lazer—with a little help from The Police’s master drummer Stuart Copeland—took the otherworldly track and gave it new life. Just add Snoop, Cori B, and Drizzy and you’ve got yourself a boomshot. Audio After The Jump… (more…)
