Diddy Jetted Down To Kingston JA To Bless The Winner With $20,000 Prize Money
It’s not every day that Puff Daddy jets down to Jamaica to throw a soundclash. But earlier this month he did just that, with a little help from Downsound, the same folks who teamed up with Supreme Promotions to make this year’s Sting extra-hot. Word is the whole plan came together within 24 hours, but you know what they say… real Bad Boys move in silence. Diddy kicked things off by rocking a few of his classic cuts, then he was joined by Beenie, Flippa, Kippo & Ninja. (Diddy’s pretty much done it all, but he looked genuinely geeked to be rocking a stage in Kingston.) After that it was time for the big clash, and Matterhorn dealt with them wicked. Why Is Bunny Wailer Flipping on Snoop?
We Thought It Was All Good Between Jah Bunny and Snoop Lion
If you’ve see the Snoop Lion documentary, Reincarnated, you know that Snoop and Bunny Wailer got together and burned a peace pipe at Bunny’s house in Kingston. So it came as some surprise to read today’s TMZ item stating that Snoop was “Rejected” by Jah Bunny, an original member of the Wailing Wailers. Wailer claims Snoop has engaged in “outright fraudulent use of Rastafari Community’s personalities and symbolism” — and has failed to meet “contractual, moral and verbal commitments.” On second thought, maybe it shouldn’t come as such a surprise. Later on in the film, Bunny showed up at a recording studio with a stern face, asking tough questions about Snoop Lion’s intentions and whether he was really true to the whole Rasta thing. Apparently Snoop’s response was good enough to convince Bunny to jump in the vocal booth and record some vocals with Diplo. But it would seem that Bunny has since rethought that decision. Rihanna’s 10 Best Reggae Songs (So Far)
Let’s Run Down RiRi’s Ragga Roster
Call us reggae conspiracy theorists, but isn’t it strange how folks forget that the world’s biggest pop star started out asa Bajan bashment gyal? Rihanna stepped on the scene during the summer of Diwali, flinging patois hooks and collaborating with Elly and Adi on her debut album. So why are people surprised that she stays tweeting Sizzla and Beres lyrics? “My favorite artists are all reggae artists,” Rihanna explained when her single “Man Down” dropped back in 2010. “I’m super inspired by reggae music… It’s been a part of me since I was born, and I grew up listening to it… I live that culture. I never get tired of it. I can listen to reggae music all day long, and it was exciting for me to do a song like this, especially with the lyrics being like that.” Although she still hasn’t taken up Lady Saw’s invitation to do what would surely be a crazy collabo, Rihanna has repped her island roots to the fullest over the years. Let’s take a minute to run down some of Rihanna’s best reggae songs (so far). List Begins After The Jump… (more…) -

WATCH THIS: Pusha T ft. Popcaan & Travis Scott “Blocka” Official Video
Live From Matches Lane, It’s The Wrath of Caine
Lots of rappers go to Jamaica to shoot videos. Very few go deep in the heart of Western Kingston like Pusha T did on this one. All the way live from
MatthewsMatches Lane, the PNP garrison where Zekes once ruled the scheme, Pusha kicks his ghetto metaphysics surrounded by bandana-faced bravehearts with chrome shotties. The gritty visual aesthetic is in keeping with previous Clipse and Pusha videos, only it’s transported to one of the most notorious blocks on Jamrock. Sure woulda been nice to hear more Popcaan on this track, but if Hotskull’s not already working on his own remix somebody needs to get him an instrumental like yesterday. Video After The Jump…

After A Medical Scare The “Rasta Rock” Chanter Has Got His Mojo Back
This past October Mr. Mojo, the youngest member of Morgan Heritage, collapsed during a Miami recording session and was rushed to the hospital. After recuperating from his illness, he’s back with newfound energy and a new record deal at Krian Music Group, the same indy label that’s now home to dead prez and Richie Loop. “After fighting through a near life threatening encounter, as I did last month, you tend to revamp your outlook on life,” Mojo said in a statement. “My single ‘New Dawn’ has become more relevant in my personal life. I hope to provide listeners with a vehicle to always look on the brighter side of a bad situation and the song gives me a second chance at doing just that.” Mojo calls his sound “Rasta Rock,” a blend of reggae, alternative, and hip-hop with a Top 40 twist. “New Dawn” samples Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” and features an uplifting hook from Mojo’s big brother Peetah. Cuban Government Cracks Down On Reggaeton
Are Officials Trying to Put Out Fire With “Gasolina”?
Last week Orlando Vistel Columbié, who runs the official Cuban Music Institute, gave an interview to the government-run Granma newspaper that has local reggatoneros up in arms. Effective immediately, artists are not allowed to perform music with anything the government deems to be obscene lyrics. Vistel Columbié made clear that the new ban on expression may affect other genres as well: “We are not just talking about reggaeton. There is vulgarity, banality and mediocrity in other forms of music too,” Vistel Columbié said. “But it is also true that reggaeton is the most notorious. “On the one hand there are aggressive, sexually obscene lyrics that deform the innate sensuality of the Cuban woman, projecting them as grotesque sexual objects. And all that is backed by the poorest quality music.” The penalties include taking musicians off government-approved lists that would make it difficult to get gigs. Radio and TV stations are also being forced to stop playing reggaeton, and new laws are in the works to limit what can be played at public events. This isn’t the first time Cuban officials have lashed out at the sexy hybrid of dancehall, hip-hop, and Latin sounds. The government criticized local reggaetonero Osmani Garcia’s hit song “Chupi Chupi” last year, saying that it “put the soul of the nation in the balance.” Check it out and judge for yourself.
