  • HEAR THIS: Bonafide ft. Damian Marley “Start N Stop”

Las Vegas Based Reggae Group Tangles With Gongzilla

“Reaching out to humanity at large,” says Damian Marley near the end of this tasty one-drop tune, “Big Gongzilla in charge.” Or is he? Gong’s blustery bravado notwithstanding, this deceptively simple song is all about people stubbornly sticking to their own point of view. One thing’s for sure—the track is anchored by rock-solid live instrumentation courtesy of this Mobay-by-way-of-Vegas rhythm section. Yet there’s no denying that Gongzilla takes it over the top, peppering the pot as only a champion DJ can do. The bristling banter between Bonafide lead vocalist Jr. Rootz and Gongzilla lends “Start N Stop” a humorous tone that gives way to more thought-provoking, universal issues such as mankind’s apparent inability to cooperate. “You keep on doing the same old thing, I keep on making the same mistakes—so we keep on getting nowhere. Move on for goodness sake.” Check this tune for greatness sake. Once it starts you won’t want it to stop.

Keyboard Master Touter Harvey Drops A Dubstep Update of The Jackie Mittoo Classic “Drum Song”

“Reggae influence a lot of music,” says Bernard “Touter” Harvey, and he should know. He’s played on classic cuts by Bob Marley and Inner Circle, among others. “Look at it this way, reggae have many babies. A man say in Jamaica you have the roots. Every tree have to have roots and it have to have branches. And from branches, sometimes you get seeds. Sometimes even the root push out another plant or a baby plant.” One of the  new musical babies would be dubstep. “Where we used to have dub, now we have drum and bass and dubstep.” The good people at Dubshot Records have teamed with Inner Circle to produce Dub Planet X, a tribute to Jackie Mittoo, reworking some of his classic compositions inna “Steppin Dub” stylee. Audio after the jump.

  • WATCH THIS: Mr. Vegas & Friends “Sweet Jamaica” All-Star Remix Video

Of all the tunes released in honor of Jamaica’s Golden Anniversary, the people’s choice appears to be “Sweet Jamaica” by Mr. Vegas featuring Shaggy and Josey Wales. Never one to bite his tongue, Mr. Vegas vigorously defended his own tune when another song—”On A Mission,” produced by Shaggy no less—was designated the official theme of Jamaica’s independence celebration. As if the original version wasn’t sweet enough, Vegas just dropped the maddest remix of “Sweet Jamaica” with another Jay Will video to match. When Vegas calls this an “All-Star” remix he isn’t kidding—we’re talking DJs from Daddy U-Roy to Beenie Man, singers from Leroy Sibbles to Cocoa Tea to Marcia Griffiths to Barrington Levy—and many many more. With all this talent on one track, this selection simply cannot be denied. #CertifiedBoomshot. Memo to the tourist board—maybe it’s time for a new theme song.
