“LAVAAA!!!” The Irie Flame of I-Wayne

Lava Splash! Fire Dash! Everything Burn To Ash

Sunday September 4th marked Irie Jam’s 23rd Anniversary concert spotlighting Sizzla Kalonji’s return-to-New-York performance after eight long years of absence. The supporting superstar line-up to the sizzling stage show included an artist who personifies lines from Kalonji’s “King in the Jungle.”  Seated up so high, yet so humble, I-Wayne brought his celestial presence and the hard/soft balance of his cool and deadly style to the Irie Jam Radio massive in the leafy green confines of Roy Wilkins Park. Mainstream airwaves aren’t the lane for I-Wayne. As the Prophet Capleton once put it, he is on a mission, not in a competition. To see him truly manifest is to catch him live in the flesh. After a seething set that made knowledge born that his musical ministry is service to the people—not about bulleting Billboard or gaining Grammys—we linked up with the Loyal Soliders Promotion crew backstage. I-Wayne broke it down with Boomshots as to what the Irie Jam performance meant to him, burning a righteous fire, and shedding light on the livity of a lava lyricist. Video After The Jump… (more…)

HEAR THIS: Chronixx x Federation Sound “Roots & Chalice”

Steam Ministah Links Federation Fam To Give Us The Fullness

Chronixx and the Federation family had a musical meeting of the minds to create this amalgamation of wicked instrumentals past & present. The 60-minute mix includes well known tracks “Like A Whistle,” “Alpha & Omega,” and “Tenement Yard” to warm up your ears to a familiar beat.  The heavy drum and bass breakdown stampedes in on “Spanish Town Rocking” (inspired by Mr. Levy’s crucial Channel One selection) as Chronixx executes a sound inna dancehall stylee. “Queen Majesty” is a top selection with a smooth melody that the ladies will be sure to love. Chronixx dominates the microphone as an emcee and singjay with special features from Eesah on “Perfect Tree”, Dre Island on “Puppy Nose”, Kelissa on “Best Love”, and Kabaka Pyramid on the title track Chalice & Roots. “Dem haffi wait likkle while for mi first album…” Chronixx ends the mix with a proclamation that leaves us wanting more. Behind the steam, the music disappears from whence it came, deep into the tallest peaks of Jamaica’s lush green dreams. Audio After The Jump… (more…)

Lenny Kravitz on Bob Marley: “He Was Hardcore With His Love”

The Last Living Rock Star Remembers The King of Reggae—And Reveals Why He Cut His Locks

Kids nowadays probably know Lenny Kravitz as that dude in The Hunger Games flicks, but the fact is that he’s one of the last great rock stars walking the planet. When he first came out, shredding his Les Paul and flashing his dreadlocks, haters used to call him a Bob Marley wannabe. But the fact is Lenny had more in common with the Tuff Gong than a hairstyle. The offspring of a black mom and a Jewish dad, he grew up between a Caribbean island (Bahamas, not Jamaica) and the U.S. Although Bob spent less time in Delaware than Lenny did in NYC, the island vibe is a party of his musical identity. Kravitz will rock Webster Hall tonight as part of his Strut tour, so this seemed as good time a time as any to hold a likkle reasoning. Interview After The Jump… (more…)

D.C.’s Punky Reggae Pioneers Turn Up The Heat Again

As if their triumphant return to the music scene isn’t enough, Bad Brains members Dr. Know & Darryl Jenifer have gotten into the pepper sauce trade. The trailblazing punk band’s website now sells bottles of a tongue-blazing concoction called “Fire Burn Babylon Hardcore Hot Sauce.” Bad Brains’ love of reggae music is no secret. The dreadlocked D.C. punk quartet’s self-titled 1982 debut album interspersed blistering hard core tracks with lilting dubbed-out riddims like “I Love I Jah.” The first single from their latest album, “Into The Future,” has been issued on red, green, and gold limited edition vinyl (click through photos above). But this “small-batch scotch-bonnet-pepper-based sauce” is their first foray into West Indian cuisine.  “Fire Babylon is a perfect blend of heat and sweet, with the “Secret 77″ recipe,” adds Darryl, the bassist. “Dr. Know and I have returned to Hot Sauce Heaven with this roots, rock, rubba dub style hot sauce.” So why not check out their new sounds while you decide if you can take the heat? Audio After The Jump… (more…)
