Cali Reggae Duo Taps The Turf Prez

Rebelution frontman, Eric Rachmany, and DJ/producer Amp Live are definitely on to something with their side project Unified Highway. Ever since Boomshots premiered their video for “My Space” in January the response to their genre-bending sonic alchemy has been overwhelming. “This album is actually pretty diverse,” Eric told us back then. “Every song is a little bit different from the other, so we are excited for people to hear the diversity.” His words are borne out by their latest video, the sun-and-bikini-bonanza called “My Only” featuring sixteen blazing bars from Busy Signal. “Honestly, I’m not saying this to brag or anything but I really feel like this project is groundbreaking. It’s different from anything I’ve ever heard or been a part of.” Leggo. Video After The Jump… (more…)

“Crouching Tiger Meets Kill Bill Meets Jamaica Booty Pageant”

Tifa’s visuals are always next level, and this medley video featuring two songs—”The Champ” produced by Zj Chrome on the The Champ Riddim & “Big Bumper” on Birch’s Moskato Riddim (both distributed by the might 21st Hapilos Digital)—is no exception. Shot on location in Kingston Jamaica at the Chinese Garden in Hope Gardens the video was directed by RD Studios Jamaica with styling & makeup by Dexter 3D Pottinger. “In terms of the concept, it’s ‘Crouching Tiger’ meets ‘Kill Bill’ meets Jamaican booty/bumper pageant,” the DJ explained to Boomshots. (Things get pretty hilarious in that over-the-top pageant scene—with DJ Chi-Ching-Ching, producer Birch and comedian/radio host Dufton “Duffy” Shepherd as judges.) Later, in a heartfelt IG post, she elaborated on her creative spirit: “I was born different! I guess that’s why no matter what I always take a different approach to things🙏🏾🌟 & I wouldn’t change it for anything. I wouldn’t change me for anything💙” Neither would be. Girl I’ll Tropical House You

After all the teasers, snippets, and Snapchats the video for Rihanna’s most unabashedly dancehall track ever drops today, same time the tune touch the No. 1 spot. Our bredren Paul Parris called Riri and Aubrey the Queen and King of Dancehall, which might be overstating the case, but we feel the fire of his argument. Point being that Tropical House shit is dead. Please have the decency to call it what it is: dancehall. By now we all know the song was co-produced by Drake’s very own Boi-1da, Sevn Thomas and Partynextdoo—three youths from T-Dot who looped up Pot of Gold’s “Sail Away” riddim and took the track behind “Badman Nuh Flee” to the top of the pops. The video is appropriately twerktastic and bangs even harder with DJ Autograph’s remix underneath. Pree this. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Two Dancehall Divas Tackle The Track Sister Nancy Made “Famous”

This weekend the Internet is buzzing about Kanye West dissing Taylor Swift on a track called “Famous.”  The song, which apparently features Rihanna and Swizz Beatz, is part of his new album, The Life of Pablo, and isn’t released yet. If you were one of the people who tuned in to last week’s big Yeezy Season 3 fashion show / album premiere, live-streamed around the world from Madison Square Garden, then you know the most-talked-about track on the most-talked-about album right now is built around Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam”—a dancehall classic on the immortal Stalag Riddim. Since it’s not much fun reading about songs you can’t hear, let’s turn our attention to another hot song that interpolates “Bam Bam.” This one was created by Toronto’s own Julky Black, who reached out to a real live Jamaican reggae star to spit some fire on the remix, riding a rough and rugged remake of the Stalag with drums that go extra hard. No more long talking. Audio After The Jump… (more…)

The Mad Gyal’s Fairy Godmother Hooks Her Up To Bruk Out

Spice’s latest visuals are a dancehall Cinderella story, with one major difference: in the traditional fairy tale, Cinderalla uses a needle and thread to stitch herself a dress. In Spice’s version the needle eye has a whole different meaning. (Word to Shabba Ranks.) Just like in the Disney movie, those wicked stepsisters head out to the dance, leaving Spice at home with no bashment gear. But never fear—her fairy godmother hooks her up and Spice heads straight to the session to flop those stepsisters and take the man they’ve got their eyes on. (The man in question is played by Spice’s real-life man, Nicholas Lall). Shot entirely in Paris, France, the “Needle Eye” video delivers a powerful dose of eye candy. All the classic dancehall themes are there—the speaker boxes, flaming torches, multicolored wigs, and headtop wining—but with a fresh, playful twist that keeps things extra-Spicey.  Video After The Jump… (more…)

The Dappa Slappa Is Missing That Glue Sincerely

Dexta Daps is a youth who sings for girls and gallis—full stop. And when he deals with the matter, he doesn’t go sideways or screech around corners—he addresses it straight and plain. Sure, this gifted singer/songwriter serves up some sweet and tender melodies—and this sticky-sweet slow jam, produced by the masterminds at Daseca, ranks up there as one of his sweetest. But let’s not beat about the bush. When he says he missed this girl, he’s not just thinking of long walks on the beach or evenings at home to “Netflix and chill.” He misses her f*ck. As with his breakout hit “7Eleven,” Daps keeps it 100 on this tune, a winning formula for his fervent female fanbase. “Me friends ah laugh and say me pussy-whip,” Daps sings. “Pussy whip me like slavery!”  Check him profiling in a Rolls Royce with his honey dip in this criss new video. Muma Saw Gets Her Groove Back

You already know whenever Muma Saw drops a track it’s going to be hot. But this Summer Saw is on fire. When the first line of a tyne is “I wanna fall deeply in love”…soon followed by “I wanna get so damn drunk!”—well, you get the picture. “This summer me ah touch ‘pon the beach” Saw spits on her latest track. “A new boyfriend me ah cop fe the summer.” After all the catfights, clashes, heartbreaks, and high-heel shoes, she’s just trying to exhale and show she’s still the baddest B in business. It seems like Saw is on some YOLO vibes at the moment. Listeners rarely have to do much reading in-between the lines with Saw’s lyrics and this song is no exception. Let’s just say the Queen of the Dancehall is out and about and she don’t care who knows it. Oh, and the summer heat has got her needing a new man in between the sheets. Saw proudly shows off her her beach bod in the video, surrounded by some very fit semi-naked males or effortlessly chilling in the sunset with the likes of the new legendary duo Bounty and Beenie. #NotMad Video After The Jump… (more…)

“I Wear My Benz Punany with Confidence”

Jamaican-Canadian Pop Star Reconnects With Her Dancehall Roots

Kreesha Turner’s debut album Passion was an instant smash in her native Canada. Back in 2008 her single “Don’t Call Me Baby” became the most played song on Canadian radio and hit number one on Billboard‘s U.S. Hot Dance Club Play. Nominated for “Best New Artist” and “Best Pop Album of The Year” at that year’s Juno Awards, her future seemed all mapped out for her. But there is another side to this perfect pop princess, a girl who grew up between Edmonton, Canada and Spanish Town, Jamaica. “Before I got signed I was in the underground hip-hop scene, and everything I did was a mixture of dancehall, hip-hop, and R&B,” she explained to the Reggae Girl About Town over lunch at Strawberry Hill. “When I got signed, the label took me all the way opposite to what I was. They got me to start straightening my hair. I went to media training and they told me not to speak in Jamaican dialect.” Now managed by Nick Cannon and signed to Universal Republic, Kreesha’s third album brings her full circle, diving into the dancehall, hip-hop and R&B sounds she loves. Her first single, “Sexy Gal,” features the Jamaican dancehall supergroup T.O.K. Watch for the official music video premiere March 31 on Mass Appeal. Who’s That Girl?

This tune is the first we’ve heard of Mink Jo. All we can say for sure is that the Jamaican chanteuse is easy on the eyes—and she and Konshens definitely have some, um, creative chemistry bubbling on this track, courtesy of Dre Day Productions. Something about her voice sure sounds familiar. Critics have branded her a Rihanna wannabe, but with the BNM team in her corner she’s aiming to blaze her own trail. Keep an eye out for Mink’s Boy Girl Love mixtape and meanwhile keep this tune Pon di Replay.  Audio After The Jump… (more…)
