The Soundbwoy has been making some noise for a minute—teaming up with 3Beat and dropping some musical bombhells. And it looks like the noise is being heard loud and clear. The MOBO Awards recently announced their shortlist of nominees for the 18th ceremony, and Stylo G bagged not one but two nods: ‘Best Reggae Act’ and ‘Best New Comer’. You can check the official MOBO Site for full details, but his competition in the reggae category includes MavadoPopcaan, Sean Paul, and Tarrus Riley. Not too Badd!  And if you haven’t caught on to Stylo’s latest tune then listen up, it’s classic Stylo style featuring  Sister Nancy. Oh gosh!  Audio After The Jump…

  • HEAR THIS: Christopher Ellis “Better Than Love”

Old Time Supm Come Back Again
    christopher-ellis-Boomshots

After shelling down Miss Lilys and SOBs last week, the Ghetto Youths crew has made it clear to everybody  that they aren’t just talking about good music, they’re really putting good music out there. On Labor Day Monday Wayne Marshall, Christopher Ellis, Jo Mersa & Black Am I came together to lock down the Strictly Boomshots show on Radio Lily, only to then walk down the road and rip the stage at SOBs where they were joined by original Ghetto Youths co-founders Damian, Julian & Stephen Marley. If you made it to either spot you might still be buzzin’ from the excitement—and if you’re in the UK September 28, you can catch Chris doing his thing at the Jazz Cafe—but either way you won’t be mad to take a listen to the latest number by Christopher Ellis. Produced by Jr Gong it’s the new addition to Chris’s growing catalog, putting his sweet harmonies to a vintage beat and bringing a fresh take to some real classic reggae music. Something “Better Than Love” is in the air, so good even @EllisMuzicChild cant put his finger on it—but it sure sounds good!  Audio After The Jump…

Who Says Cops Can’t Have Fun In The Carnival?
    NottingHillCopsBOOM

It’s the biggest street festival in Europe so for the 48 hours this fest goes on police from across the country are brought into Ken Chels to patrol the streets. Hey, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it. But when the citizens show their appreciation—especially the drunk, scantily clad citizens—that’s what makes it all worthwhile. Video After The Jump… (more…)

  • HEAR THIS: Steel Pulse “Put Your Hoodies On (4 Trayvon)”

Handsworth Revolutionists Still Asking: “Does Not Justice Stand For All”?
    CIS:E.1492-2010[Photograph by Dennis Morris]
When Steel Pulse first burst out of Birmingham in 1975, they were the most militant reggae group in England. Their debut album, Handsworth Revolution set a tone of uncompromising rebel music with tracks like “Ku Klux Klan.” The band would sometimes throw on Klansmen’s hoods when performing the tune live, making a dreadfully powerful statement and striking fear into the hearts of downpressors worldwide. After dabbling in lighter fare like “Rollerskates,” the Pulse is back on that hood shit, but this time in tribute to Trayvon Martin. David “Dread” Hinds describes their new song, “Put Your Hoodies On [4 Trayvon],” as “a plea for justice. Steel Pulse has been campaigning and watching this case since February 26th 2012. The fact is that an innocent teenager is dead, shot by a man who was playing vigilante—pursuing the teenager around the neighborhood despite being advised against it by the authorities. This could well end up as the day justice was killed once again in a Jim Crow. We sensed the result  but despite the outcome of the trial, the truth remains the truth, and the ghost of justice will haunt this town of Sanford, Florida forever.” Audio & Download Link After The Jump… (more…)

Reasoning With The Selector for London’s Mighty Saxon Studio International
    TrevorSaxBoomshots
“I like to play the vinyls,” says Trevor Sax of Saxon Studio International. If you don’t believe him, you need to brush up your sound system history. Founded in 1976 as the Imperial Rockers, by Dennis Rowe and Lloyd ‘Musclehead’ Francis, the sound changed its name to Saxon Studio International two years later. They are a cornerstone of the UK reggae industry, shining a light on future stars like Peter King, Papa Levi, Tippa Irie, Smiley Culture, and Maxi Priest. Trevor Sax joined up in 1981. Our friends over at Animal New York tell us this may be Sax’s first interview ever, and we’ve got no reason to doubt them. “He gave us a glimpse into his vinyl collection, which is so massive that records are piled in virtually in every room. Some are even stowed away behind hidden panels, which Sax laughingly pried open with a butter knife to exclaim: More records!” You get the idea. It’s a UK fing. Video After The Jump… (more…)

WATCH THIS: Soon Come ”Shy FX” Official Video

Original #JunglistMassive Nuttah Now Doin’ Reggae

“You never know Shy FX man big inna London”? If you know jungle you know Shy FX has his name all over that. The original rude boy was responsible for makin’ everyone dance like a nuttah in raves during the 90’s. Now he’s gonna come out with a straight-up reggae album! WTF?!  Reggae might not be what you expect to hear from the producer— who has worked with such UK artists as Dizzee Rascal & Plan B—but it’s always been in his roots. His granddad Count Shelly imported Jamaican reggae sounds to the UK during the ’60s & ’70s and owned a sound system back in the day. Judging by the first song off the album, it actually sounds like it’s gonna be quite good when it “Soon Come.” The track—featuring vocals by Liam Bailey—has a sooo very island sounds, sweet enough to make you feel nostalgic but cool enough to be blaring in your drop-top when summer hits.
