WATCH THIS: Kranium ft. Tory Lanez “We Can” Official Music Video

    Queens x Toronto Link-Up

Ever since he put Queens dancehall on the map with his x-rated worldwide smash “Nobody Haffi Know,” Kranium has been putting in much work while ignoring the haters. After signing a deal with Atlantic Records the stakes were raised even higher but somehow the singjay has maintained his cool while developing his own distinctive voice. Hitting the road with New Toronto sensation Tory Lanez, Kranium has carved out his own lane, and developed some creative chemsitry with the T-Dot reprsenter and today they dropped a new video for their collab “We Can.” Inspired perhaps by President Obama’s “Yes We Can” refrain during his Farewell Address, Kranium makes it clear that he and his girl can do just about anything they want. The visuals are as tasteful as the tune is raw. With Mr. Lanez’ radio clout, it sounds like Kranium may have a next banger on his hands. Audio After The Jump…

  • Kartel Tops Billboard 10 Best Reggae Albums List

Kartel Tops Billboard 10 Best Reggae Albums List

The best of times and the worst of times for lovers of Reggae Music

For the second year in a row Billboard asked Rob Kenner, founder of Boomshots Media, to pick the 10 Best Reggae Albums of the year. The assignment was particularly significant in this year where Jamaican sounds were all over the airwaves, the pop charts and the Grammy nominations, except that most of the records were not done by Jamaican artists. You could hardly turn on the radio without hearing a half-hour block of dancehall-style tracks, all too often classified under misbegotten names like “tropical house” and “Caribbean bass.” With both Justin Bieber and Rihanna briefly sporting dreadlocks and Drake publicly referring to himself as “the don,” it would be difficult for longtime fans of the music not to catch feelings this year….Consider this list a crib sheet to catch you up on everything you missed while tropical house flooded the airwaves.  Full List After The Jump…

Brand New Visuals Fi Di Ganja Man Dem

Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica Lutan Fyah studied architecture and played professional football before launching into a music career in 1999. Cutting early records for Buju Banton’s Gargamel label, he would go on to collab with such culturally inclined artists as Lucinano and Turbulence. On his latest release, produced by Tim Dub, Fyah goes beyond the usual ganja tune cliches, giving a botanical lesson on the definition of “trichomes” and how these small glandular hairs growing from the epidermis of herb buds relate to the cultivation of the cannabis plant. A Little Somethin’ To Ride To

Five youths from Oceanside, California started a reggae band called Fluid Foundation. Their sound is warm and easy, a sunny mix of reggae, dub, and pop with a loose-hanging surf sensibility.  Their self-titled debut album was tracked at the famed 17th Street Studios with esteemed producer Lewis Richard—whose band “Jesus Wore Dickies” was a favorite of the early 2000s reggae-rock circuit. Members of  bands like Long Beach Dub All Stars began working with him at the studio and Richard would go on to create tracks with the likes of Dirty Heads, Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, Iration, and Seedless. Dropping October 8th, the Fluid Foundation album features UK dancehall veteran Pato Banton, Trini herbalist Marlon “Ganja Farmer” Asher, and Micah Brown. Today Boomshots premieres the first track off the project, an easy skanking groove called “Cruizin” with a feature from Pato and Kevin Offitzer of Stick Figure on drums.      Maya & Daps Link Pon The Borderline

Ever since M.I.A. first burst on the world, she has been all about crossing lines in the sand, using her playground chants, beatbox ballistics, and agitprop visuals to mash up all cultural and geopolitical borderlines. Now that M.I.A.’s released what she warns may be her last album, her focus on speaking truth to power from a refugee point of view takes on new urgency as the world finds itself in the midst of a “refugee crisis” and Brexit meltdown and a Trump presidential run. As soon as M.I.A. released “Borders” (both the song and its breathtaking video) anticipation for this album began to build, and yesterday AIM finally arrived. On this track Maya dabbles with dancehall star Dexta Daps of “7Eleven” and “Shabba Mudda Pot” fame who sounds like the UK bad gyal inspired him to hit some strong new notes. Audio After The Jump…

How To Prepare Your Steam Chalice

High tech vaporizers may be all the rage in Babylon, but in Raging Fyah’s new video, they focus on the proper preparation of the ital steam chalice. Celebrated in big tunes like Jah 9’s “Steamers a Bubble,” the Rastafarians’ natural vaporizer utilizes bamboo shoots and coconut shells to achieve a cool smoke-free ganja vapor without the use of microcircuitry. Now just make sure that whatever you put in it is a strong and natural as Raging Fyah’s new album Everlasting and you will be good to go. Video After The Jump…

Big Big Request To The Greatest

Forget what you heard. Muhammad Ali will never die. Ali may be one of the few larger-than-life icons to challenge even Bob Marley for nearly universal respect. We’ve all seen photos of The Greatest with Elvis, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan—he was even Prince’s hero—but what’s his connection to reggae? Derrick Morgan, one of Jamaican music’s greatest, pays tribute to boxing’s “Black Superman” in this Bunny Lee production which made a splash in the UK with Trojan Records in 1975, the year of the Thrilla in Manila. (The song predates the famous DC Comics book, published in 1978.)  Audio After The Jump…

Zeke Stern, who’s produced tracks with Green Lion Crew for reggae stars like Kabaka Pyramid, Chronixx, Collie Buddz, and Beenie Man, has collaborated with visual artist Taj Francis for a psychedelic audiovisual mashup. This will be the first episode in a series called Tenfold: Opus, in which Francis interprets the work of various musicians. “Temple” is a visual interpretation of the Fall of Mankind in the garden of Eden (Genesis Chapter 3, the part about the serpent tempting Eve to taste the forbidden fruit.) “Valley of Dub” the heavy melodica-infused dub soundtrack, is a perfect complement to this epic episode. The World Boss Channels Ziggy Marley

Described by Chronixx as a “fearless creative soul in this earth,” dancehall’s incarcerated World Boss, Vybz Kartel continues to amaze. In the past he has recorded cover versions of dancehall classics by the likes of Shabba Ranks and Grindsman, but today his cover of Ziggy Marley’s “Tomorrow People” hit iTunes. This song is perhaps even more unexpected than Kartel’s cover of The Beatles “In My Life“—since that was clearly labeled as a personal tribute. But this note-for-note cover of the 1988 breakout single from Bob Marley’s firstborn son makes a bold statement that Kartel is more than capable of performing in the reggae idiom. Depending on your age, intellect, and musical point of view, the idea of Vybz Kartel singing “if you don’t know your past you don’t know your future” may strike you as ironic, profound or both. Because Valentine’s Day Isn’t Always So Sweet

It’s been ten years since Jah Mason dropped his album Princess Gone: The Saga Bed The title track, originally released in 2005, was the artist’s first No. 1 single in Jamaica, topping the charts for three straight weeks. The tall, slim turban-wearing youth, born Andrae Corey Johnson in rural Manchester, clearly had music in his blood just like his relative Tony Rebel. And despite all the music he’s made in a prolific career, “Princess Gone” remains his signature song. Now working with New Creation productions, Jah Mason recently gifted his fans with a new EP entitled Love & Wisdom. This tasteful acoustic remix—filled with shakers, Binghi drums, flute, acoustic guitar and sweet harmonies—invests the poignant song with fresh life. Anyone who’s ever lost their love will surely feel this one, especially on a day like today.  Audio After The Jump… (more…)
