Singy Singy Turns Up The Music—And Throws A Pop-Up Shop At Miss Lily’s NYC

Tarrus Riley is turning heads with the lover’s rock anthem “Dem A Watch” from his rock-steady album Love Situation. This was Tarrus’ first album to top Billboard‘s reggae album chart a week following the project launch on Feburary 4 of this year. The album was independently produced and distributed by Tarrus Riley along with Cannon, Riley’s BSMG (Blak Soil Music Group), Riley co-manager Shane Brown’s Jukeboxx Productions, and South Florida based digital reggae distributor Zojak Worldwide LLC. . Tarrus will be hosting a list of shows this summer and kicked off his tour with a performance at Best of The Best in the Miami. Meanwhile the ever-versatile artist dropped a more dance-oriented single “Tun Up The Music” featuring Chi Ching Ching, produced by Chimney Records. We are looking forward to more crossover-style releases from Singy Singy, but who can resist the smooth vocals and romantic theme behind “123 I Love You”?  With continual support from reggae musicians like the great Dean Fraser, Tarrus Riley is positined to keep producing quality music for years and years to come. Busy Signal Revives “Gal Yuh Good”

In 2013, rapper A$AP Ferg made the song, “Shabba” which featured a cameo in the video, from the “Dancehall Emperor” himself  and rapper, A$AP Rocky; “8 Gold Rings Like I’m Shabba Shabba Ranks!” The admiration for the two-time Grammy Award winner in this song, was a clear indication that Shabba Ranks’ music, transcends across genres and into the ears of today’s generation of listeners.  The reggae legend has a trailer load of tunes, including roots and culture songs, but the sexy ones remain imprinted on music minds.  Mr. Loverman’s, “Wicked In A Bed” was featured on the top selling video game of all time, “Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas” for Playstation 2. To name a few more, who can forget classic Shabba smash hits:  “Telephone Love,” “Caa’n Done,” “Slow and Sexy,” “Love Punany Bad,” “Bedroom Bully”  and fan favorite, “Gal Yuh Good.” Busy Signal just revived the latter, from the 90’s, with his new video release, saluting Shabba Ranks for his original song and adding  signature vocals.  More After The Jump…

Lady Saw His The Big Apple, Announces New Album Alter Ego, And Speaks on Jay Z & Solange

Who keeps it realer than Muma Saw? The Queen of the Dancehall passed through NYC the other day to announce her upcoming double album Alter Ego. This record will show off both sides of Saw’s creativity, from the hardcore dancehall cuts to rap—including her big “Heels On” remix with Flo-Rida—soul, pop, and even a touch of gospel. Saw has been toying with the idea of retiring from the dancehall for some time now and exploring her “Marion Hall” side, but judging by her latest releases there’s no danger of that happening any time soon. Songs like “I Don’t Care” and “Pretty Little Fingers” show that Muma Saw is still reigning in the dancehall and still putting clues about her personal life in between the lines of her music. Reshma B and Saw have had some classic interviews before, but this one might just be the best yet. They spoke about whether “Pretty Little Fingers” describes what’s going on in her home, why she’s decided to stick with her existing relationship for now, and what she thinks really happened between Jay Z, Beyonce, and Solange in that elevator. Maya & Partysquad Connect On a Reggae-Flavored Matangi Raveup

Remember that song you used to sing when you were a kid? “Uh-ohhh you’re in trouble.” Well MIA and Partysquad have updated it for her latest album, Matangi, adding a reggae backbeat and some grown up lyrics: “I step up in the game and burst your bubble.”  This week she dopped the vid, which was directed by MIA herself. Looks bad girls do it right. The new visuals shows the making of fully functional guns using a 3D printer at home? Sound far fetched? They can burst more than a bubblle. Welcome to the future, circa 2014. This ain’t no kids stuff. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Jay Will Directs A Short Film Inspired By Notis & Iba Mahr’s Tribute To Classic Dancehall Fashion

Notis is a drum-and-bass production team comprised of Unga on drums and Welsh on bass. They were the team behind Ding Dong’s “Holiday” and many more recent dancehall/reggae hits. Earlier this year they dropped the track “Diamond Sox” with roots DJ Iba Mahr, and the song made a big splash right away. Riding a laid-back rootsy groove, Iba chats lyrics in praise of classic dancehall dress code items like the mesh “marina” (a ventilated tank top, preferably in red green and gold), the Arrow shirt that’s customarily worn over top,  Wallabee Clarks, and of course, matching socks in Clarks’ trademark diamond print. Now Jay Will has directed a music video that’s really more of a short film. With a cast that includes reggae legend Max Romeo, Tuff representing the Nomadz crew, and of course the mighty Bass Odyssey sound. Shot on location in Iba Mahr’s home turf of Linstead and Bog Walk, this video is destined to become a classic time capsule of Jamaican culture. Boomshots TV is proud to premiere this one. Game Over. • Gaza Slim’s Redemption Song

    Gaza Slim’s Redemption Song

April 3, 2014 was a melancholy day for dancehall fans, when Justice Lenoxx Campbell made his ruling in the murder case of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Adidja Palmer aka Vybz Kartel was sentenced to life, with the possibility of parole after 35 years. In this case, no body was ever found and the case was decided mostly on text message evidence from telephones seized from the accused. Attorneys Christian Tavares-Finson and his father Tom Tavares-Finson, both lawyers who defended the dancehall artist, are already working on an appeal. Vybz Kartel associates Shawn Campbell aka Shawn Storm and Kahira Jones also received life sentences with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Shane Williams, another associate was acquitted on all charges in this murder case but charged for another murder case. Vanessa Saddler aka Gaza Slim, Vybz Kartel’s protégé was charged with a lesser charge, obstruction of justice, for filing a false incident report about being robbed at knife-point by Clive “Lizard” Williams, just five days after Kartel was charged with murder, in an effort to pervert justice. As Kartel fans gathered outside of the Jamaican Supreme Court for the 58-day trial, Gaza Slim showed her presence and undying love for the World Boss.  More After The Jump…

As A Hotthead Youth, There Are Certain Things Busy Nah Do

Star$truck entertainment’s Star$truck riddim, it had some big tunes on it from Beenie, Bling Dawg, Iyara, and more. But the standout was Busy Signal’s Hotthead anthem “Wet Spliff.” Not really a weed tune—the title is somewhat misleading—”Wet Spliff” here is used as an example of behavior that Busy frowns upon—wetting a spliff for another man—and that he won’t be doing any time soon. In fact, never. To be specific, he states: “I nah long out me tongue wet no spliff fi no man. No!” Which is fair enough. Who really does that anyway? (Nor will he watch gal fi nuh man, bust shot fi nuh man, etc.) The brand new video for the tune, directed by Icey Jace, doesn’t actually show anybody “longing out their tongue.” But it does show Busy and his crew taking over Kingston radio station Hot 102, which is pretty rad.
