An All-Star Tribute to the Tuff Gong
Just last week reggae lovers celebrated what would have been Bob Marley’s 68th Earthstrong. Rihanna and the Marleys felt it was only right to do sup’m at tonight’s Grammy Awards in tribute to the Tuff Gong. They will be joined by Bruno Mars, who has called Marley “one of the greatest songwriters ever,” and Sting, whose work with The Police helped to bring reggae music to the rock and pop radio. Rihanna has often expressed her admiration for Marley and the Tuff Gong’s impact on her music and her life. She performed his classic “Redemption Song,” to help raise money for Haitian earthquake survivors and even showed her love by wearing a custom-made Bob Marley dress during her SNL performance. Snoop Lion’s Dancehall Documentary Continues Its Gaza Trend
The first two episodes of Noisey Jamaica’s dancehall series focused on Vybz Kartel and Popcaan, and the Gaza trend on part three, which features “the Anti-Christ of the dancehall,” Tommy Lee Sparta. His “Uncle Demon” persona has made him easily the most controversial character in Jamaican music, hot with the kids and dissed by older dancehall diehards. In a dimly lit room, Tommy Lee opens up in this interview. Be afraid. But it’s not all fun and games and scary makeup. The former Leroy Russell says he can’t return to his home in MoBay because of his success, as police have now branded him a don. “I can’t even get to see my kids them,” he says. “I can’t go to my place. I have to let them come visit me at a hotel when I have shows and those things. They don’t want me to go into my place. When I first heard this girl I felt I could crap my pants at any moment from hearing her chat, and things ain’t really changed on that front! So when this video turned up in my DM inbox I knew I needed to take some personal time out to deal with it. Chann always keeps it real & being a tough cookie hasn’t kept her from keeping feminine and sexy. When Chann and her bredren Shizzle recorded this track over the classic Neptunes beat for her latest mixtape Dun Dem Season: The Trilogy it was decided then and there to shoot a video for it—and how glad are we that she did?!? Chann Is a girl who never forgets who’s been there for her and where she came from. Her loyalties go deep, but don’t sleep.
