East Side West Side Gully Side Gaza… Snoop Lion Sparks A One Love Jamdown
    mavadosnooplionpopcaanBOOM

As a hip-hop O.G. Snoop lived through the East versus West rap wars, and witnessed the tragic events that resulted in the death of two great artists. In 2013 Snoop Lion’s older and wiser, so there’s a certain poetic justice that his song “Lighters Up” should end up bringing together artists from the Gully side and the Gaza in musical unity. Now the video has dropped and it looks like everybody had a good day blazing trees at Trident Castle in Port Antonio. They even invited the Tivoli Gardens marching band out to make a joyful noise. Looks like it was a good day. Video After The Jump…

  • Reasoning with Dennis Emmanuel Brown

The Crown Prince Would Have Turned 56 Today
    DBrownBOOM

The first of February marks the beginning of Black History Month and Reggae Month. It’s also the birthday of the late great Dennis Brown, known to reggae lovers as the Crown Prince. (If only because Bob Marley was the undisputed King, although Marley himself gave Dennis maximum respect.) The immortal voice that sang “Love and hate can never be friends…” and so many more classics was first cut on vinyl at Studio One. His first release was “No Man Is An Island,” which connected instantly and made him a child star. DBrown would go on to achieve international renown with his 1972 smash “Money In My Pocket,” which entered the UK pop charts. It was a British TV crew that shot the invaluable footage that follows, for their 1982 Channel 4 documentary Deep Roots Music—and yes this is the same interview sampled for the intro to the Damian Marley & Nas Boomshot “Land of Promise.” Check it out while you put one in the air for the Crown Prince.  Video After The Jump… (more…)

  • Lady Saw “Heels On” Live in Miami

Muma Saw Gets The Fans Involved
    LadySawBoomshots
When Lady Saw took the stage at the Reggae World Unity Fest in Miami the other day, all that talk about turning into a gospel artist went right out the window. Make no mistake, Saw will come to the Lord one day. But right now, she’s keeping it raw. When it was time to do her latest boomshot “Heels On,” Saw invited a couple from the crowd to show them how to get their groove on. Step one, lay the man on the stage. Step two, get into position. Step three, fling it dung. And don’t let Saw catch you slackin’, or she might have to show you how it’s done. Video After The Jump… (more…)

The First Episode Of Snoop Lion’s Dancehall Documentary Series Goes To Gaza
    KartelBoomshots
Episode one of “Noisey Jamaica” focuses on the Werlboss. Although there’s no interview with Kartel—whose trial date was recently postponed again, this time until May—we do get a few words with Dre Skull, who produced the album Kingston Story, and some Gaza youths who want to see Kartel free. We also get a very interesting conversation about how Kartel encourages girls to “quint” their muscles during sex. All in all an entertaining start. Video After The Jump…

  • WATCH THIS: ZJ Wah Wa & Wasp “Clique (Str8 Up World)” Official Video

Wasp Stings Up Hit-Boy’s “Clique” Beat On The Madboss’s New Mixtape
    Wasp2Boom

Wasp is one of those artists who’s been doing his thing long enough to have a few hits under his belt and a little bit of buzz—yet somehow his crazy skills still go unappreciated. But sometimes a great mixtape freestyle can fix a problem like that. Check out the way Wasp deals with the “Clique” beat—”The one with the curve dem me ah observe them”—on this cut from DJ Wah Wa’s new mixtape Str8 Up World. Wasp is not the first to say “me flow ah de baddest,” but he may just have a point. It’s an eye-opener to witness an undeground dancehall artist ripping up a G.O.O.D. Music track as well as or better than Big Sean, Jay-Z or Kanye. If I had a tune this hot on my hard drive, I’d call The Untouchable Dancers and director Icey Jace to shoot a video too. Two questions: What is up with Wah Wa’s space alien motorcycle helmet? And what’s that thing Wasp puts into his boombox? A cassette!?! Video After The Jump… (more…)

    Saw Kicks Into Overdrive

We knew this song was a hit from the first time we heard it. Like any great song it brought vivid images to mind. But rarely does a dancehall video live up to the visions of one’s own imagination. Lady Saw’s “Heels On” video, shot on location in and around Saw’s house on New Year’s Eve 2012, is a rare exception to the rule. The sexy, sophisticated Scorpio21-directed clip doesn’t just equal expectations; it exceeds them. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Everybody has something to get off their chest. And DeMarco’s latest music video is supposed to be about freeing up his conscience. Except by the looks of this clip, DeMarco did nothing wrong—he’s just another innocent pizza deliveryman, handcuffed and victimized by a bunch of scantily clad bashment girls. It’s a tough job but somebody’s gotta do it. Video After The Jump… (more…)
