Bruno Mars’s multiplatinum debut album, Doo-Wops and Hooligans, gets filed under “Pop” on the iTunes Music Store, but if you think you hear a lot of reggae on it, you’re right. And it’s no addident. “I was in a reggae band in high school,” Mars told Toure in a recent interview. “Hawaii is really like Bob Marley-ville. [laughs] And for me personally, I think Bob Marley doesn’t get enough credit as a songwriter. I think he’s one of the greatest songwriters ever because of the melody and the simplicity and the message and the emotion that he put behind his music. I’m a fan of him as well as Beres Hammond and Peter Tosh—there’s a lot of other cats. It’s definitely because I’m from Hawaii.” Bruno couldn’t work with Bob, but he did make a tune with Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Bob’s youngest son. The One Love Peace Concert was a large concert held on April 22, 1978 at The National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. This concert was held on the anniversary of Haile Selassie’s visit to Jamaica during a period of political civil war in Jamaica between the right wing Jamaican Labour Party and the socialist People’s National Party.
