After a 65-day trial plagued by delays and confusion—and capped by an emotional statement read by Kartel—the jury took only a few hours to reach their 10 to none decision. Despite the fact that no body was ever found, the hotly contested text message and BBM evidence—whose validity was strongly questioned by the defense—proved decisive. The dancehall star’s case attracted international attention, with rap star Busta Rhymes traveling down to Jamaica Crowds have been gathering around the Courthouse for weeks in anticipation of the verdict, along with a heavy police presence. There have been reports of bottle throwing since the news hit the streets that arguably the biggest star in current Jamaican music would not be set free today—or perhaps for many days to come.
