  • FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Beirut “Nantes”

Where Have We Heard This Tune Before?beirut

Today’s Flashback Friday is particularly special in that it features a song that most of us have never heard before until recently, thanks in part to Snoop Lion’s lastest single “No Guns Allowed.” Snoop’s plea for an end to gun violence really struck a nerve with listeners—not only for its subject matter but for its simple, hypnotic instrumental that was built off a sample of the song “Nantes” by the indie band Beirut’s 2007 album The Flying Club Cup. Nantes
was founded by New Mexico native Zach Condon, who recorded the debut album Gulag Orkestar in his bedroom. Major Lazer—with a little help from The Police’s master drummer Stuart Copeland—took the otherworldly track and gave it new life. Just add Snoop, Cori B, and Drizzy and you’ve got yourself a boomshot. Audio After The Jump… (more…)

  • WATCH THIS: Protoje “I & I” Official Video

Protoje’s Latest Visual Is More Than Just A Music Videopro

Just three weeks ago, a group of young Jamaicans exercised civil disobedience in remarkable fashion on Hope Road. The occasion appeared to be a video shoot for Protoje’s ‘I&I,’ the second track on his Billboard and iTunes charting album, The 8 Year Affair. Yet, much more occurred on that Friday morning. Moreover, it was flawlessly executed. Bracing bumper-to-bumper traffic scores of Rastafarian youth, Reggae Revivalists and their supporters spilled onto the street. They marched from the Twelve Tribes of Israel headquarters at Clieveden Avenue, made their way pass the Bob Marley Museum to King’s House, the Governor-General’s residence, then continued on to Jamaica House, which houses the Office of the Prime Minister. The inspirations for the video as Protoje states:

“Every time I envisioned what this video would look like, all I kept seeing was I and I and I making this trek,” said Protoje. “The song is aggressive but it is still love that we are coming with. I wanted the video to show that energy.”

The ‘I&I‘ video features the likes of Kabaka Pyramid, No-Maddz, Jesse Royal, Hempress Sativa, Jah9, Chronixx plus members of Zincfence, Pentateuch and Raging Fyah along with other familiar faces. Members of Protoje’s band, The Indiggnation, are also prominent in various scenes. Again Protoje insists this wasn’t a protest of any sort, in fact as he claims:

“It wasn’t a protest or anything like that, I and I just felt like taking a stroll down a public street and have fun doing it.”

None the less the procession definitely garnered a lot of attention. See What The Power Of Music Can Do After The Jump… (more…)

  • HEAR THIS: Snoop Lion Ft. Cori B & Drake “No Guns Allowed”

Snoop Enlists His Daughter Cori B And Drake As They Plead For An End to The Gunplay snoop

Having previewed this track Last week on the Conan O’Brien Show, big Snoop Lion drops the next single off his Reincarnated album entitled “No Guns Allowed,” which Snoop has repeatedly called his favorite on the album. It’s certainly a departure from Snoop Dogg’s “187 on an undercover cop” days.  The track is a plea for the removal of guns due to the increased, senseless killings of innocents especially children. To further drive home the seriousness of the song Snoop recruits his own daughter Cori B whose voice provides the perfect backdrop for Drake’s heartfelt verse, which was apparently inspired by a 2012 shooting in Toronto that left two dead and dozens injured. Too much ain’t enough, apparently. “Lookin’ to be the God MC,” K-Dot rhymes, “Look at my hat and see thorns there. Look at the game and see porn there.” Yeah Kendrick fucks with it hard. And Jay does what he does, presenting his verse from the Bombardier Challenger 850 that B gave him for Father’s Day. “Up in the clouds, me and my spouse.” And yeah that turbulence in the air might just be a touch of competitive juices flowing.
