While in New York the Dancehall Emperor collaborated with American rappers A$AP Ferg and A$AP Rocky on the official remix of a eponymous song “Shabba Ranks”. The Grammy award winning DJ boasts an elaborate list of hits from his travels from yard to the United States.     Lady Saw His The Big Apple, Announces New Album Alter Ego, And Speaks on Jay Z & Solange

    Who keeps it realer than Muma Saw? The Queen of the Dancehall passed through NYC the other day to announce her upcoming double album Alter Ego. This record will show off both sides of Saw’s creativity, from the hardcore dancehall cuts to rap—including her big “Heels On” remix with Flo-Rida—soul, pop, and even a touch of gospel. Saw has been toying with the idea of retiring from the dancehall for some time now and exploring her “Marion Hall” side, but judging by her latest releases there’s no danger of that happening any time soon. Songs like “I Don’t Care” and “Pretty Little Fingers” show that Muma Saw is still reigning in the dancehall and still putting clues about her personal life in between the lines of her music. Reshma B and Saw have had some classic interviews before, but this one might just be the best yet. They spoke about whether “Pretty Little Fingers” describes what’s going on in her home, why she’s decided to stick with her existing relationship for now, and what she thinks really happened between Jay Z, Beyonce, and Solange in that elevator.     Former Alliance member Flexx wants peace for Dancehall giants Mavado and Bounty Killa

    There is trouble on the Gullyside as Jamaican artists Bounty Killa and Mavado—a former members of the Alliance—have launched into a lyrical battle over a range of past differences. Mavado’s longtime bredren Flexx went on to leave Alliance and signed to Hapilos 21, while Mavado has been spending time in America after signing to DJ Khaled’s record label We The Best. Bounty Killa has released several diss tracks striking out against Mavado—the latest of which, “Kill and Destroy” on the red-hot “Good Book” riddim, is a direct reponse to Mavado’s track on the same riddim—and despite reports that the Gully God has put the lyrical battle behind him, the We The Best artist continues to release music that sounds like it subliminally targets the Alliance team. Bounty Killa was booed off stage in Jamaica for speaking negative words about Mavado and members of his Gully Squad crew  and now Mavado’s new track “Do Wah Yuh Waan ” is rumored to be a direct launch at The Five Star General Bounty Killer.  Dancehall has a long history of clash and rivalry, but nobody wants to see things get out of hand. To prevent a never-ending battle that could lead to someone getting hurt, Flexx has broken the silence and spoken out against the rivalry.  Audio after the Jump

    Promoter Promises to “Learn From His Mistakes” at BOTB 2014: Reggae & Soca—but NO Hip-Hop

    For the past eight years Best of the Best has been a fixture of Memorial Day Weekend in Miami, a big outdoor reggae and soca show that normally features top hip-hop acts as well. But this year, Reshma B caught up with Jabba who explained that this year he’s “learned from his mistakes” and made BOTB 2014 a 100% Caribbean festival. That’s right, for the first time the festival will feature reggae and dancehall and soca but NO hip-hop. “Me get back to my roots,” say Jabba. “This year we involve more soca into the show more than just keep mixing the hip-hop and the reggae, because it come in like oil and water. We notice it’s eight years going in. When I first begun I just, you know, coming from a big urban radio station, I feel like hip-hop is part of my culture as well. Because you done know is a Jamaican man who started hip-hop in the Bronx—Kool Herc big up yourself anywhere you deh. So I felt like I can take that mission to a next level and just know say, Hear wah gwan now, let me mix up hip-hop onto reggae on the next level like it’s never been done before. And big respect to all the rappers, but it come in like the worst idea we coulda ever do. But you learn from your mistakes.
