What Would You Do To Be The Star? How Far Would You Go?

After Lexxus and Vegas told the world “Some gyal nuh ready fi di video light yet,” why do some people insist on keeping up foolishness just to splash all over YouTube, Instagram, and even Vine. Sure they might cop a plea and claim say they “ain’t gon’ do it,” then the next thing you know there they are getting reposted and retweeted. So Mr. Vegas had to link up with Dag Diggy (aka “Cratches King”) once again to take a light-hearted look at the crazy things that happen when the camera phones turn on. Some a dem still hype although hypness nuh fit them—uzeet? Video After The Jump… (more…)

B.B. Seaton’s Tune Hit UK Dancehalls in 1971; Led Zep’s Tune Hit The Worldwide Charts In ’73

A friend of mine recently slapped me in the Facebook with an article about Led Zeppelin being the “Greatest Song Thieves In Rock History.” Ouch! It’s no secret that in addition to being a reggae lunatic, I’m a big-time Zeppelin appreciando. I’ve spent enough time listening to Led Zep live to be able to identify concert dates and venues blindfolded. Don’t test me. I’ve also listened to enough music and read enough about the band to know of their tendency to, ahem, adapt the work of others. Judge For Yourself After The Jump… (more…)

Russian Expatriate DJ Flings Down The First Selection From His Forthcoming LP, Dubcatcher

So… what does a Russian-born yute named Daddy Vad know about “dibby dibby soundboys” you ask? Apparently quite a bit. We were just a tad skeptical when we first encountered this resident of the London suburb of East Ham. After all aren’t there enough hipster dancehall projects littering the global soundscape at the moment? But then we took another look at that crazy album art. And the label’s press release finally won us over when it stated: “Think more Eddy Grant than Sean Paul. Taking a musical genre and infusing it with the sounds of soul, boogie and rap, cranking up the bass to 11 and sometimes just dubbin’ it…conscious, social, political but also playful and ample portion for the lovers. Like one of the albums’ skits, it’s all about vibesing up the place. I wanna hear some drums n bass!” Mek it go so then. Here’s the first joint off Dubcatcher, featuring righteous vox courtesy of Rio Hemopo and Sabira Jade.  Video After The Jump… (more…)

Natty Dread Rides Again: Ziggy Marley’s “Fly Rasta” Tour Rocks NYC

Before  the Fly Rasta Tour touched down at SOB’s, Ziggy Marley explored  Miss Lily’s Variety and reloaded with a veggie punch from Melvin’s Juicebox on Houston Street. The bursting-at-the-seams SOBs crowd, geared up for his arrival with  blazing musical selections of  DJ Lady Fyahramma Thomas.  Pat McKay from Sirus XM Radio brought more feminine fierceness into the building, showing her support in the crowd. Ziggy hit the stage fully energized and began the concert with the song, “Love is My Religion,” from his second solo album. The universal message disseminated through the crowd, as members of the audience shouted the lyrics in unison. “The main thing,” Ziggy said of this song, “its not the title where Ras Tafari fits into life or where Christianity fits or where Islam fits. Where does love fit?” Video & Review After The Jump… (more…)

Ricky Blaze & Gyppy Are Ready For Their Closeup

The first time Gyptian ventured into Ricky Blaze’s basement studio in Flatbush, Brooklym, he emerged with a certified-gold heard-round-the-world hit single called “Hold Yuh” which peaked on the Billboard charts in May 2010. Despite this massive success, the singer and producer haven’t made another record since—until earlier this year when Ricky Blaze unveiled a hypnotic new track as “Stuck.” Shot on a freezing-cold night at Rain nightclub in Jamaica, Queens, the visuals are nevertheless full of heat. Popcaan Gets Unruly in Ocho Rios, Says “Most Jamaicans Will Be Surprised” By His New Album

Watch the Unruly Boss Shell Down a Stage Show and Talk About His Debut Album

When we last caught up with him at the 2013 staging of Reggae Sumfest, Popcaan told Reshma B that his debut album would be coming next year and that it would be “totally different,” with more “uplifting” songs. Now that the album is completed, he can shed a little bit more light on the project, which is titled Where We Come From and will be dropping on Mixpak Records June 10. Known for hits like “Ravin” and “Party Shot” and “Only Man She Want,” Papi shows a different side on the new album, starting with the single “Everything Nice” which blends the serious realities of life with an uplifting forget-your-troubles-and-dance vibe. After years of playing his position in the Gaza camp as Vybz Kartel’s protege, Popcaan is now acknowledged as a major star in his own right who rolls with his own clique, Team Unruly. The Reggae Girl About Town recently rolled with the team to a stage show in Ochi, and got the full scoop backstage, onstage, and after the show in the parking lot. Find out why Popcaan says “most Jamaicans will be surprised,” by the new album.  Videos After The Jump…
