Jamaican Singing Sensation Wins Knockout Round

The first time he heard Tessanne Chin sing, Adam Levine told her she could easily win the whole thing. And after this week’s Knockout Round, she took a step closer to fulfilling Adam’s prophecy. The Jamaican chanteuse went up against Ashley DuBose and blew her out the frame with a rousing rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger.” The night was a double defeat for Ashley since none of the other judges picked her up.  Video After The Jump… (more…)

Things Were Such Simpler Back Then

We all have that one person who occupies our mind. The one we, in odd hours of the day, gaze and wonder about what could have been or in some cases should have been, “the one that got away” as they say. There’s also another saying that goes “if you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it’s yours forever.” This is what Wayne illustrates in his latest visual for “Reset It” We often find someone who is perfect for us but the timing may not have been appropriate, but the love is still their to revisit hopefully a few years down the line. TDE’s Next To Blow Brings the Ruckus… Boom!

Boomshots only fux with certain hip-hop records, but the first time we heard Schoolboy Q’s “Banger” it felt like a soundbwoy killer. The bucket-hat-wearing madman from the Top Dawg Entertainment fam gets rough rugged and raw over a track by tHe renegades track that’s punctuated with reggae-matic drumrolls. Much like the record, the stark black and white video, directed by Jerome D, is all killer no filler. No telling exactly what SBQ’s puffin on, but judging by his reckless behavior it must be some of that extra-wacky Cali tobacky.  Video After The Jump…

Ariwa Posse Announces “The Roots of Dubstep Tour”

The legendary UK dub producer will be setting off to the other side of the Atlantic for a tour of the U.S. kicking off this coming Monday in Burlington Vermont. Setting up his Ariwa Sounds studio at home in 1979, the youth born Neil Fraser had an early fascination with electronics that has kept everyone fascinated with him ever since. He started in the game at a time when the UK lovers rock scene was at its peak with artists like Deborahe Glasgow (the sultry female voice heard on Shabba Ranks‘ “Champion Lover“), Kofi of Brown Sugar, and Sandra Cross. Using his innovative did numerous classic records with British microphone chanters like Macka B and Pato Banton. Not long after the Mad Professor teamed up with the Mad Genius Lee “Scratch” Perry and between the two madmen came some of sub’s most legendary works in the form of Mystic Warrior, Dub Take The Voodoo Out Of Reggae, and Fire In Dub. He remixed Massive Attack‘s second album Protection to create the sonic masterwork No Protection. Those who need to catch up on his work should check out A Rough Guide to Ariwa available via the proudly independent label’s official site. Boot Camp Vets Stand Firm With Mr. “One Blood”

In the past couple of months, a wave of reggae collaborations has surfaced across genres of music—from the lover’s rock of Shaggy’s “You Girl” featuring Ne-Yo to A$AP Ferg saluting “Shabba Ranks” to Nicki Minaj and Busta Rhymes providing dance lessons with “Twerk It” to Selena Gomez trying to walk “Like A Champion” in Buju Banton’s footsteps. Some collaborations represent sheer genius while others lean on loud yelling and Ja-fakin’ accents. The best usually feature a reggae artist’s vocals, giving the tracks authenticity. Case in point: Boot Camp Clik’s Smif N Wessun (General Steele & Tek) have paid homage to reggae music ever since their inception. Their classic “Sound Bwoy Bureill,” from their 1995 debut album, Dah Shinin, painted on a canvas of echoes from old-school dancehall verbal artillery. The verbal brushstrokes of Fuzzy Jones’s  intro and Smif N’ Wessun’s use of Jamaican patois-infused rap, create a masterpiece of hip-hop reggae fusion that could only have been birthed in Brooklyn. This warning was also sampled on Kanye West smash hit, “Mercy” in 2012. “Sound Bwoy Buriell” also features lyrics from Buju Banton’s “Boom Bye Bye” making it a BoOM tune by far! Video After The Jump…
