  • MTV Nominates Tifa for Iggy Song of the Summer

    Tifa’s Competing to Become MTV’s ‘Champion Bubbler’

    Tifa has been making plenty of headway the past few months with her hits, “Nuh Good,” “Why Yuh Mad” and her now MTV nominated single, “Champion Bubbler.” The dancehall artist is one of ten that have been nominated by MTV for the Iggy Song of the Summer. Competing with the likes of Bunji Garlin, Tifa is just excited to be a nominee. “It’s an honour to be nominated for this MTV Iggy award. This song is like the little engine that could’, Tifa stated in a release to the media.

    Fans are happy for Tifa and hope that she receives the win. Plenty of them have voted already for her and can continue voting until July 22nd. Check out “Champion Bubbler after the jump. (more…)

    When Steel Pulse first burst out of Birmingham in 1975, they were the most militant reggae group in England. Their debut album, Handsworth Revolution set a tone of uncompromising rebel music with tracks like “Ku Klux Klan.” The band would sometimes throw on Klansmen’s hoods when performing the tune live, making a dreadfully powerful statement and striking fear into the hearts of downpressors worldwide. After dabbling in lighter fare like “Rollerskates,” the Pulse is back on that hood shit, but this time in tribute to Trayvon Martin. David “Dread” Hinds describes their new song, “Put Your Hoodies On [4 Trayvon],” as “a plea for justice. Steel Pulse has been campaigning and watching this case since February 26th 2012. The fact is that an innocent teenager is dead, shot by a man who was playing vigilante—pursuing the teenager around the neighborhood despite being advised against it by the authorities. This could well end up as the day justice was killed once again in a Jim Crow. Now comes A$AP Ferg with the smash hit named after dancehall emperor Shabba Ranks. It’s clear that A$AP Ferg has nuff respect for Shabba’s swag: “Eight gold rings like I’m Shabba Ranks” / “Two bad bitches like I’m Shabba Ranks” / “One gold tooth like I’m Shabba Ranks” And Rocky chats a few lines of Shabba’s hit “Ting A Ling” on his verse.     Austrian (Innsbruck to be exact) DJ group Wax Wreckaz, made up of Busy Fingaz, Juwee, Fu and Sensay, four graphic design students from different social backgrounds came together through their shared love of music. For their first release off the Jeffree’s imprint the link with european dancehall ruler Million Stylez to create a hybrid of reggae, pop and electronica.     “I like to play the vinyls,” says Trevor Sax of Saxon Studio International. If you don’t believe him, you need to brush up your sound system history. Founded in 1976 as the Imperial Rockers, by Dennis Rowe and Lloyd ‘Musclehead’ Francis, the sound changed its name to Saxon Studio International two years later. They are a cornerstone of the UK reggae industry, shining a light on future stars like Peter King, Papa Levi, Tippa Irie, Smiley Culture, and Maxi Priest. Trevor Sax joined up in 1981. Our friends over at Animal New York tell us this may be Sax’s first interview ever, and we’ve got no reason to doubt them. “He gave us a glimpse into his vinyl collection, which is so massive that records are piled in virtually in every room.
