The soulful voice of Beres Hammond, the “Otis Redding of Reggae,” has captured our full attention since his 1976 Willie Lindo produced debut “Soul Reggae.” Now, with his 26th studio album, One Love, One Life (VP records), nominated for a “Best Reggae Album” Grammy (the second nomination of his remarkable career), Beres provides the ultimate love experience with 20 skillfully crafted songs for music lovers to enjoy. Taking the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top 10 Reggae Albums chart, and being noted by Rolling Stone as “one of the best albums of a four-decade-long career,” Beres’ latest album proves this artist continues to hone his craft, getting better with time. However will this album receive the Grammy it so richly deserves during today’s ceremony in Los Angeles? Beres faces some tough competition this year. However the final decision rests in the hands of the Grammy Voting Committee and as a member of this Committee, the Recording Academy and expert in music, Rob Kenner breaks down how the process works in Complex Magazine’s “Hate Me Now: What Its Like To Be A Grammy Voter.” In this article he bravely reveals the secrets that make it less likely that such a strong album will  be selected. • Melanie Fiona Picks Her 10 Favorite Reggae & Dancehall Songs

Melanie Fiona Picks Her 10 Favorite Reggae & Dancehall Songs

The Grammy-Winning R&B Star Is A Bashment Girl At Heart

Melanie Fiona is best known for heart-wrenching hits like “It Kills Me” and “4 A.M.,” which have made the soulful singer a major star among American R&B fans. The two-time Grammy winner grew up in Toronto as the daughter of first-generation Guaynese immigrants. Her Caribbean influences have always been clear to the educated ear, from her dramatic vocal delivery to specific songs like “Somebody Come Get Me,” which was released under her old nom-de-reggae Syren Hall, as well as “No Cigarette Smoke,” her smoldering duet with Stephen Marley. Melanie continues to flaunt her Caribbean colors on “All My Love,” a new reggae-flavored duet with Toronto soul singer Glenn Lewis. Listening to the song there’s no mistaking the fact that Melanie’s Caribbean roots run deep. So we thought it would be cool to ask her to pick her top 10 reggae and dancehall tracks. Her picks speak volumes about her musical taste, her artistic temperment, and (dare we say it?) MF’s wild side. Click through the gallery above to check out Melanie’s selections and then read her candid conversation with Reshma B. Video And Interview After The Jump… (more…)

  • Sean Kingston Gets Back to His Jamaican Roots

Sean Kingston Gets Back to His Jamaican Roots

Sean Kingston’s 10 Favorite Reggae Songs—PLUS  His New Tune w Busta Rhymes

Ever since Sean Kingston first burst on the music scene as a teenage pop sensation with a runaway debut hit “Beautiful Girls,” we’ve been hearing how he grew up in Jamaica and his music was influenced by reggae. As hard as we listened we never really heard much evidence of that influence beyond song titles like “Fire Burning.” But that seems to be changing with his new album, Back 2 Life, SK’s first full-length project since he sustained serious insuries in a jet-ski accident. The first indication was the lead-off single “Shotta Luv” feautring 2 Chainz. And then we stopped by his record-listening in NYC and heard a straight-up dancehall track featuring Busta Rhymes. Sean seemed to like it so much he played it like three times in a row. The next day we asked him to run down his ten favorite reggae and dancehall tracks—and we are not mad at the selections. He even says he wants to work with Shabba Ranks! So hit the jump to learn the half that’s never been told about Mr. Kingston. Videos After The Jump… (more…)

  • Jah Cure at Reggae Sumfest: “Somebody Has to Sing For The Ladies”

“Somebody has to sing for the ladies them,” said Jah Cure in his pre-show interview backstage at Reggae Sumfest 2013. “So I chose that path after Beres Hammond as a youth. So yeah, the ladies them is my thing.” Just before taking the stage to close International Night, Iyacure sat down for an in-depth reasoning session with Boomshots correspondent Reshma B. He was clearly pleased to be sharing the stage with the great Jamaican soul man Beres Hammond, who produced Cure’s debut album Ghetto Life. “Beres is one of the greatest ever—trust me. Beres is the boss. Beres is my idol, mentor, my father, my inspiration—he is everything to me. He taught me how to use my vocals. Teach me a lot about the music business and how to handle myself and my business.” Cure was also happy to see the strong turnout for International Night, whose lineup of roots reggae singers rivaled the crowd for the previous evening’s Dancehall NIght. “Them say you can’t keep a good man down,” he said. “You can’t keep a good thing down. The real must come to life. People eyes are open every day. It’s more reggae.” And for Cure reggae music means singing about love. “A man speaks what’s in him. So when these other artists sing about gun, crime, violence, skin-out, bruk-out, that’s what’s in their mind. I sing about love, the struggle, peace—every time. I sing about the most love in the business. That means it’s the love within me that I bring out. The love within me I project to the world.” Fnally Cure spoke on the love he has for elders like Lee “Scratch” Perry, and says that he hopes to collaborate with the legendary reggae pioneer. “People always ask me if me and Scratch Perry are family,” Cure remarked. “I would like to do some work with him before we lose him. Cause this generation coming up right now we have to stand up and represent. The tree weh them plant, we ah pick the fruits weh them bear. So we haffi sow back some seeds too.” Video After The Jump…
