Beenie Man, Wayne Wonder, and Mr. Vegas Star on Pre-Labor Day Special
With Labor Day weekend right around the corner, New York is buzzing with anticipation for a weekend of Caribbean culture. Even hip-hop and R&B stations are pumping up their reggae, dancehall, and soca playlists. Not to be outdone, BET’s top-rated music show 106 & Park will be devoting today’s show to dancehall stars Beenie Man, Wayne Wonder and Mr. Vegas. Even the music videos on the show representing Caribbean culture, and the audience and hosts are repping their favorite islands. Boomshots got the early heads-up so we made our way to BET’s studios for the taping and snagged some backstage interviews. We chopped it up with Beenie Man, who debuted a new video on the show (“Thug Love” featuring Ce’Cile) and Mr. Vegas, who told us about his big Beyonce remix “Standing on the Sun” and his forthcoming dancehall album, Bruk It Down 2.0. Who Will Be Named Best Reggae Artist At The 2010 Soul Train Awards?
Nuff respect to the original Don (Cornelius). The Soul Train Awards ceremony takes place this Wedensday in Atlanta. And while Usher and Alicia Keys lead all nominees this year, we’re focused one of the newer categories. Last year Sean Paul walked away with the first ever Soul Train Award for Best Reggae Artist. This year’s nominees include Gyptian, Mr. Vegas, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Vybz Kartel, Gramps Morgan, and Jah Cure—a diverse mix of roots reggae, soul, lovers’ rock and straight-up dancehall, and a better representation than most other major awards shows. This past week, rumors that Vivian Blake had been killed in Kingston were running wild. Ever since the former Shower Posse leader returned to Jamaica this past January after serving time in U.S. Federal prison, he has kept a low profile and focused on writing and taking care of his health and his family. When reports of his death began circulating on the evening of September 21, U.S.-based film producer Curtis Scoon reached out to Blake, who granted this exclusive interview in hopes of separating fact from fiction. In Buju Banton’s classic “Untold Stories,” the DJ sings “I could go on and on the full has never been told.” The tale of Jamaica’s notorious Shower Posse is one such story. A recent BET American Gangster episode did scratch the surface, but the segment’s producer, Curtis Scoon, believes there is much more to be told. “No interviews please” Vivian Blake returning to Jamaica on January 29, 2009.
After spending eight years in U.S. prison on federal racketeering and drug charges, Vivian Blake was escorted back to the land of his birth by U.S. Marshalls along with 51 other deportees just over seven months ago. The former Shower Posse Boss spent his time behind bars developing his skills as a writer, and plans to tell his stories on the big screen.
