Busy Delivers A Scathing Critique of So-Called Artists Who Insist on Messing Up The Game

One good thing about going away for a while, when you come back you tend to see things a bit more clearly. And sometimes people are more inclined to listen to you. Let’s hope the whole reggae biz heeds the message of Busy’s latest video and takes it to heart. Nobody wants to discourage talented people from getting into the game, but somebody’s got to make a case for quality control. And it never hurts to do it with a touch of humor. Bu make no mistake. Busy’s dead serious when he says “What a disgrace inna the music fraternity. Right now the music need a surgery…” Video After The Jump…

Busy Speaks On His Incarceration, And Makes A Point To Burn Out Demons From Early
It seems that not a day goes by without Busy Signal dropping another heatrock in our inbox. But today’s tune stands out above for several reasons. First, it’s the most detailed account of Busy’s incarceration yet—aside from the refrain “Jailhouse no nice, bare chink and lice”—Busy speaks on his legal strategy (“Waive the rights to me extradition, caw me know me an innocent man”) as well as his decision to go straight home to Jamaica after his release rather than putting in a little work Stateside first (“Me couldn’t wait fi the damn plane land; me freedom worth more than gold and diamond.”) Apparently Busy enjoys an open rapport with Riff Raff Notice, the same producer responsible for his sexy homecoming tune “Jail Juice.” The other thing that jumps out on this song is the fourth line: “Me no mix up with no evil nor no demon.” Was that intended a warning shot at Tommy Lee? Guess  we’ll have to wait until Sting to find out for sure. Audio After The Jump…

Shabba Ranks Endorses The Turf; The Turf Pays Tribute To The Ranks

Twenty years ago, Shabba dropped a banger called “Bedroom Bully” off his Xtra Naked album. Now Busy has paid tribute to the dancehall emperor with a 2012 update of the tune, produced by Kirkledove/Jukeboxx/Turf Music. Shabba has expressed his respect for Busy’s lyrical prowess in recent interviews. Wonder what he’s saying now? Busy definitely did the Rankin’s tune justice. #CertifiedBoomshot Audio After The Jump…

Busy Stays Getting Busy, Drops Two Bad Tunes on the Church Money Riddim

Busy is not rampin’—at all. Ever since his triumphant return to Jamaica, he’s been dropping heat every single day. Today our inbox was blessed with not one but two tunes on the Church Money riddim. The first, “Bout It,” is all about the sexy ladies with a catchy Auto-Tune hook that sounds a bit Kartel-ish. The second “Defense” is a rapid-fire audio assault focusing on Busy’s lyrical prowess. “Superior is my style, some bwoy style inferior.” Any questions? Audio After the Jump… (more…)

  • HEAR THIS: Busy Signal “Come Shock Out”

Nuff Respect to the Turf Hi Power… Music Every Minute Every Hour

Considering all that he’s been through lately, Busy sounds happy just to be back in the studio. This particular tune is all about the sheer joy of spitting lyrics. Flinging down classic foundation styles “to make you dance pon yuh toe,” Busy touches on key topics like Selassie’s 1966 visit to Jamaica, burning out badmind and obeah, and dashing another fire on the one Lucifer. After underscoring the importance of fresh armpits and a clean heart, Busy goes on to big up the godfather Rodney Price,  and shouts out a diverse range of artists ranging from Tiger to Bongo Herman, Dean Fraser, Tippa Lee & Rappa Robert, and Sugar Minott “the sprinter-stayer long-distance runner.” Sounds like another #CertifiedBoomshot from Jukeboxx Jamaica.  Audio After The Jump…

  • Busy Signal & His Mother Discuss His Troubled Past And Future Plans

Busy Signal and Velma Gordon, sit down with Winford Williams of OnstageTV

Going to jail is hard enough but having to leave your family behind is even worse. Unfortunately for Dancehall artist, Busy Signal, he had to undure all of that for more than a decade. Accused of running from a 2002 drug charge, Busy was sentenced to prison time in Minnesota on May 21 while he awaited his judgement day. But six months later instead receiving a hefty bid of seven years, Busy was released due to his good works over the past ten years. As soon as he set foot out of jail, Busy returned to Jamaica to give his first press conference and of course get back to his music. This weekend Busy and his mother, Velma Gordon, sat down with Winford Williams of OnStageTV to discuss his time in prison and on the run, how she felt while he was gone, the affect on his music and what is to come for Busy in the future. Videos After The Jump…. • Diplo Does Dancehall In Vanity Fair

Wes Takes The VF Massive To Jamaica and Introduces Them to Popcaan, Busy, and Passa Passa

Diplo and his road dog / top shotta Shane McCauley have published a photo essay in the latest issue of Vanity Fair as the producer behind Major Lazer continues to expose dancehall to a wider audience. “I was in Jamaica during this time recording with a crew for a secret project,” Diplo write in the story. “Popcaan has been brought in to give us some current vibes, and also some weed and other stuff. His favorite drink is a weird fruit flavor of vodka that he mentions in mad songs. In fact, he mentions me and the producer Dre Skull in this tune we are recording, and his friends and the studio. In Jamaica nearly every song is a document of the moment. Dre Skull will release Popcaan’s next single and has been a producer within the Vybz camp for a few years. In fact, he produced the entire Vybz album, Kingston Story, in 2011—one of the most coherent and best long-player dancehall albums in the past decades. Dre Skull produces videos for the songs he produces, too, and through his YouTube channel, these videos and the ad revenue they generate support his label on a day-to-day basis. It’s a funny economy that just sorted itself out, since the fall of the old days of record deals and CD sales—but dancehall still found a way to keep the doors open.” More Photos After The Jump…

    Busy’s Back—Time To Get Busy… Hottted!

That first tweet when he touched back down on Jamaican turf was nice. Last night’s press conference was sweet. But nothing beats the feeling of hearing Busy Signal’s first new release since his own release. No surprise he sounds like he’s got a lot to get off his chest. “Me just jumped out and me ready, go tell the whole world say me ready.” His fans are ready for sure. Hope the whole world is ready too. Audio After The Jump…

  • Busy Signal Is Free At Last

Fresh Out Of Prison, Busy Gives Thanks To God As He Touches Back Down On Jamaican Turf

Tweeting “Guess who’s back? God is GOOD!” Busy signal announced his return to Jamaica on Friday November 17, four days ahead of schedule but not a moment too soon. Incarcerated since May 21 for absconding from an old drug charge dating back to 2002, Busy was released from a federal prison in Minnesota after the judge determined that he had done so much good with his freedom over the past ten years that the artist had essentially rehabilitated himself. It looks like Busy lost a lot of weight during his six months behind bars, but some of that good old Jamaica cooking will surely do him good. Welcome back Busy! May your good fortune give hope to others who are languishing in prison even now. Photos and Video After The Jump… (more…)
