WATCH THIS: Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Sting Join Ziggy & Damian Marley To Big Up Bob At The Grammys
An All-Star Tribute to the Tuff Gong
Just last week reggae lovers celebrated what would have been Bob Marley’s 68th Earthstrong. Rihanna and the Marleys felt it was only right to do sup’m at tonight’s Grammy Awards in tribute to the Tuff Gong. They will be joined by Bruno Mars, who has called Marley “one of the greatest songwriters ever,” and Sting, whose work with The Police helped to bring reggae music to the rock and pop radio. Rihanna has often expressed her admiration for Marley and the Tuff Gong’s impact on her music and her life. She performed his classic “Redemption Song,” to help raise money for Haitian earthquake survivors and even showed her love by wearing a custom-made Bob Marley dress during her SNL performance. If you missed their version of “Could You Be Loved,” we got you… Video After the Jump. (more…) -
WATCH THIS: Black Am I “Modern Day Freedom” Official Video PREMIERE
Fresh New Sounds And Visuals From The Latest Recruit To The Ghetto Youths Camp
“I feel like I’m responsible to bring back roots reggae,” says the young singjay Black Am I without hesitation. “Cause the thing get watered down.” Born in the rural village of Nine Mile—birthplace of Bob Marley—Black Am I met Damian Marley while the Jr. Gong was visiting a few years ago. Taking Damian’s advice to keep practicing and developing his skills, Black Am I was ready the next time Jr. Gong came to town and soon got signed to the Ghetto Youths International imprint. His new single, “Modern Day Freedom,” raises timely questions about life within a 21st century system of economic dependency. “How can we free ourself?” the artist ponders. “We have to put our shoulder to the wheel. No more complaining. Work to be done. I myself call pon every Jamaica right now. Stand up for your right. Get up, stand up. Sitting down too long right now. It’s game time.” Video After The Jump…

Damian Marley Stole My Heart
“Affairs Of The Heart” Might Just Be The Realest Love Song Ever

WATCH THIS: Skrillex ft. Damian Marley “Make It Bun Dem” Video
Peep The New Visuals From Big Gongzilla x Skrillex
Skrillex just premiered the video for his collab with Junior Gong, and it’s a brilliant piece of work. Touching on the foreclosure crisis, the video—directed by Tony T. Datis—serves as a reminder that there are forces within us that are even more powerful than the economic pressures afflicting the whole world—if only we can tap into them. A Native American shaman in the suburbs beats the medicine drums and helps a young brave connect with the spirit world, striking fear into the hearts of greedy real estate developers. This video has a surreal, thought-provoking quality that ups the song’s artistic ante. Plus the special effects are sure to look really cool when you’re baked. What more could you ask for? Pass that fire.

HEAR THIS: Bonafide ft. Damian Marley “Start N Stop”
Las Vegas Based Reggae Group Tangles With Gongzilla
“Reaching out to humanity at large,” says Damian Marley near the end of this tasty one-drop tune, “Big Gongzilla in charge.” Or is he? Gong’s blustery bravado notwithstanding, this deceptively simple song is all about people stubbornly sticking to their own point of view. One thing’s for sure—the track is anchored by rock-solid live instrumentation courtesy of this Mobay-by-way-of-Vegas rhythm section. Yet there’s no denying that Gongzilla takes it over the top, peppering the pot as only a champion DJ can do. The bristling banter between Bonafide lead vocalist Jr. Rootz and Gongzilla lends “Start N Stop” a humorous tone that gives way to more thought-provoking, universal issues such as mankind’s apparent inability to cooperate. “You keep on doing the same old thing, I keep on making the same mistakes—so we keep on getting nowhere. Move on for goodness sake.” Check this tune for greatness sake. Once it starts you won’t want it to stop.

HEAR THIS: Damian Marley, Tarrus Riley, Wayne Marshall, & TOK “Independence”
This Is Not An Official 50th Anniversary Song
With four days to go until the anniversary of Jamaican independence, the party is in full swing and the patriotic tunes are in heavy rotation. Damian Marley contributed a verse to “On A Mission“—the official theme song, which also features Shaggy, Beres Hammond, Assassin, Tarrus Riley, Romaine Virgo, Chevelle Franklin, Wayne Marshall, Tifa & Tessanne Chin—but today the Marley’s Ghetto Youths International released a new song that asks some pertinent questions amidst all the hoopla and hullabaloo. Junior Gong joined forces with Tarrus Riley, Wayne Marshall, and TOK to make this song—not to rain on anybody’s parade, but to speak the truth. Because after all the parties are over, life goes on.
