    HEAR THIS: Horace Andy “Straight to Hell” PREMIERE

    Studio One Legend Sings The Clash Classic

    Joe Strummer’s flat, affect-less vocals on “Straight to Hell” from The Clash’s  1982 album “Combat Rock” lend a chilling air to the song’s ice cold message, which is now timelier than ever in the Trump administration prepares executive orders, travel bans, mass deportations. and wall building. “Straight to Hell” has long been considered one of the band’s best loved songs, providing raw material for future creations like M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” and Kanye West’s “Swagger Like Us.” Andy himself is a bonafide Studio One legend who’s also worked with the likes of Massive Attack. Strummer first collaborated with him in 1999, writing the militant title track for Andy’s “Living in the Flood” album. The Studio One legend had already attempted a reggae version of “Straight to Hell” but wasn’t happy with the recording. But when he linked with Milwaukee musician Eric Blowtorch, who’s worked with many reggae artists and knew Strummer, they made this brand new roots reggae recording of “Straight to Hell,” which will be released via 12-inch single on Fe True Records March 16th and via digital download on April 14th. Andy’s voacal is backed with a dub side plus Big Youth’s deejay version, “Asylum Seekers.” These type of hardcore reality tunes are all too timely in the current political climate—and do remember 10 per cent of proceeds goes to Doctors Without Borders.     “India is special and its beauty absolutely humbled me,” said Diplo in the comments for Major Lazer’s “Lean On” video—one of the most popular music videos in history, with over 1.25 BILLION views. That video was shot in Mumbai aka Bombay, the booming metropolis on India’s west coast. Earlier this year Major Lazer brought the Mad Decent Block party to Mumbai and Boomshots was there to witness the magic (shout out to Jillionaire—good lookin’ out fam). “Major Lazer has always been a culture mashup,” Diplo says. “To us, India feels like some kind of special creature with one foot in history and one firmly in the future.     The masterminds of Major Lazer: Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire fuse music and culture in, “Lean On, ” a collaboration with french producer, DJ snake. Danish singer, MO, adds a pop flair to the  indian hip hop fusion, resulting in a funky dance song with a pulsating symphonic interlude. This song ranked as number 1 in several countries and reached a peak at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. “Lean On”  continues to shine this summer as  the lead single to Major Lazer’s third studio album, Peace is the Mission.

    Combat Rock was the last studio album by seminal UK punk band The Clash. Released in 1982, the disc contained two of the band’s biggest hit, “Rock the Casbah” and “Should I Stay Or Should I Go.” But 25 years later another cut from the album—the reggae-tinged cut “Straight To Hell”—would top the charts around the world. M.I.A. and her DJ Diplo sampled The Clash original to make “Paper Planes,” which became the biggest hit in either artists’ career. The track became so popular that Kanye West sampled the M.I.A. record to make another record called “Swagga Like Us,” which he performed on the Grammys with Jay Z, Lil Wayne, T.I., and a very pregnant M.I.A.     Snoop Lion, Major Lazer & Mavado Mash Up Viceland at SXSW

    Last week at SXSW, Snoop Dogg made history as he headlined Cashmere Agency’s “LIONFEST: A celebration of Reincarnated” at VICELAND, performing for the first time as Snoop Lion. In front of 2,000 fans, Snoop showed off his new reggae/dancehall repertoire, delivering songs like “So Long,” “La La La,” “No Guns Allowed,” and “Lighters Up,” from his forthcoming Reincarnated album (set for an April 23 release on RCA / Sony). There’s also a free app for the Reincarnated album that you can download now. Diplo & Major Lazer were also on the bill, getting the crowd hyped by tossing confetti, stage diving and crowd surfing in a plastic bubble. Shortly after Major Lazer, the Gully God himself took the stage to perform a set of his hits, but don’t vex cause you weren’t there—the Boomshots massive gets the live footage first so hit the jump right away. Video After The Jump… (more…)

    Snoop Lion Premieres Reincarnated Then Mashes Up SXSW w Major Lazer & Mavado

    Yesterday was a big day for the man called Snoop Lion. First his film Reincarnated had its official U.S. premiere at the Paramount Theater in Austin Texas. (The film opens nationwide today; check SnoopLion.com for show times and locations.) Then later that night he headlined Lionfest at SXSW’s VICEland stage, sharing the bill with Major Lazer—the team that produced his Reincarnated album—and Mavado, who collabos with Snoop on the tune “Lighters Up,” as well as DJ Max Glazer of BKNY’s Federation Sound. After all the debates, the skeptics, and the naysayers had spoken their minds, it all came down to Snoop Lion showing what he could do on stage for the first time ever. And the capacity crowd was definitely showing love to the Lion, who transformed into Snoop Dogg and back again many times through the night. Aside from performing cuts from the Reincarnated album like “La La La,” “Here Comes The King,” “Lighters Up,” and “No Guns Allowed,” Snoop also kicked reggae remixes of classics like “Gin & Juice,” “Drop It Like it’s Hot” and “Young Wild & Free.” He also covered Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved” as well as “Funkin’ For Jamaica” as well as bringing out Daz and Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound for some straight-up Death Row /DPG rap jams. But Lionfest wasn’t limited to reggae or rap— Snoop even did straight-up versions of “Jump Around” by House of Pain and Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll.” Check the photo gallery above.     Check The Brand New Trailer For The Film That Tells How The Dogg Became A Lion

    Earlier this week, the Snoop Lion documentary Reincarnated was screened for a small group of media at the Sony headquarters in midtown Manhattan. After seeing the movie in full, an old Wailers lyric came to mind: “Half the story has never been told.” It may seem strange to see a gangsta rap icon from the LBC saying Jah Rastafari and singing over reggae beats. Some have even called it a gimmick. (And when Snoop released his “Hot Pockets” video with showers of pepperoni raining from the sky, it was hard to argue with them—unless there’s an ital version of Hot Pockets on the way.) But despite the apparent contradictions, don’t make up your mind until you see this film, which will hit theaters in 2013. Snoop’s visit to Alpha Boys School in Kingston, freestyling over a live version of “Rockfort Rock,” or his impromptu session with Cutty Corn in a hole-in-the-wall studio near Tivoli Gardens (not to mention his Mind Gardens project) puts this whole Snoop Lion thing in a new light. And as for his baptism as Berhane in a Niyabinghi temple (seen above), well you’ll have to judge for yourself. Who says you can’t teach an old Dogg new tricks? Video After The Jump…
