  • Diplo Does Dancehall In Vanity Fair

    Wes Takes The VF Massive To Jamaica and Introduces Them to Popcaan, Busy, and Passa Passa

    Diplo and his road dog / top shotta Shane McCauley have published a photo essay in the latest issue of Vanity Fair as the producer behind Major Lazer continues to expose dancehall to a wider audience. “I was in Jamaica during this time recording with a crew for a secret project,” Diplo write in the story. “Popcaan has been brought in to give us some current vibes, and also some weed and other stuff. His favorite drink is a weird fruit flavor of vodka that he mentions in mad songs. In fact, he mentions me and the producer Dre Skull in this tune we are recording, and his friends and the studio. In Jamaica nearly every song is a document of the moment. Dre Skull will release Popcaan’s next single and has been a producer within the Vybz camp for a few years. In fact, he produced the entire Vybz album, Kingston Story, in 2011—one of the most coherent and best long-player dancehall albums in the past decades. Dre Skull produces videos for the songs he produces, too, and through his YouTube channel, these videos and the ad revenue they generate support his label on a day-to-day basis. But the record—produced by Diplo and the Major Lazer posse—is only the beginning. Snoop’s epic trip to Jamaica and his transformation from Snoop Dogg, hardcore rap star to Snoop Lion, Rasta reggae singer is chronicled in a documentary film produced by VICE Media that will premiere this fall at the Toronto Film Festival.   • Snoop Dogg’s Top 5 Reggae Jams

    Why Are People So Shocked That Snoop Would Dabble In Reggae? Doggy Dogg’s Been At It For Years

    Yesterday Diplo had the blogs burning up with news that he’s working on a reggae album with Snoop Dogg. “Snoop Dogg is an icon, man,” the Major Lazer producer told MTV.  “He’s bigger than the music. What we’re doing is a reggae record. It’s like Snoop Dogg and Major Lazer together. It’s all reggae and he’s singing and he’s doing a fucking awesome job and I never knew it, but he had his heart in every song… We’re going to get back into the production of it next month, and I’m really proud of that record. It’s the first record I’ve ever executive-produced and his crew is amazing.” This may explain why we recently heard that Popcaan and Snoop made a song together. We can’t wait to hear what Snoop and Diplo come up with. But we’re a little confused that people seem surprised that Snoop would do a reggae song. Sure he’s better known for his pimpadelic G-funk rap hits, but the Doggamuffin has been dabbling in reggae for years. Let’s rewind back from the top…

    Congratulations to David Rodigan, the legendary UK radio personality who will receive a royal order of chivalry, becoming a member of the “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” for his contributions to broadcasting. Rodigan has represented all forms of reggae music on British airwaves and beyond for over 30 years—from programs on BBC Radio and on KISS FM to countless sound clashes all over the world. No word yet whether Mr. Ram Jam will receive his honor personally from the Queen, but he’s sure to think of her next time he dips in the box and draws for this one. Dub it with your majesty… Ya know?
