HEAR THIS: Thornato ft. Gappy Ranks “Rhinoceros” PREMIERE

You Coulda Have the Heart of A Lion, Speed of a Cheetah…

Since the success of his 2014 release “Gaita Gaita,” Queens-based producer Thor Partridge aka Thornato has been making waves around the world as a beat maker and remixer. His new project Bennu showcases the talents of versatile vocalists from around the globe. UK grime-turned-dancehall don Gappy Ranks  features on “Rhinoceros,” which Boomshots proudly premieres today. “The beat that I initially created and sent to Gappy ended up morphing into something completely different once I received his vocals,” Thornato recalls. ” I ended up stripping everything down to let Gappy’s powerful voice take the lead.  The synth is inspired by an ancient Greek bagpipe called ‘Askaulos.’ I heard a solo performance that was incredibly haunting and unique and I immediately thought it would make a great lead synth sound.” Once this riddim gets rolling, it’s oddly reminiscent of the sound of a thousand stampeding rhinoceri. Audio After The Jump…

In Comes Frenchie With A Thing Called Roots Plus Culture

Over the past couple of decades Maximum Sound has distinguished itself as one of the more dependable modern reggae imprints when it comes to consistent high-quality music. Frenchie, the elusive producer behind the label, was born in France before relocating to the UK. His sound ranges from vintage dancehall throwbacks like the “Tin Mackerel Riddim” to heavy roots rock selections like their latest, the Royal Step—a co-production with Italo-Jamaican dubmaster Alborosie. Anchored by a Morgan Heritage joint entitled “Conscious Revolution” that’s strong enough to become a fixture of the Grammy-winning band’s live set moving forward. Alborosie steps up next with an armagideon selection called “Tearful Days,” followed by a Randy Valentine x Exco Levi combination, wicked tracks from Anthony B and Gappy Ranks, even a melodica version courtesy of next-gen dub rocker Addis Pablo. Check out the brand new megamix and get used to this steppers riddim—it sounds like it could play for the next 1000 years or so.  Audio After The Jump… (more…)

Tune For Tune: Battle of the UK “Panda” Refixes

Who Flipped The “Panda” Beat Better: Gappy Ranks or Lady Leshur?

All this week we’ve been deluged with a Desiigner media blitz since the 19-year-old Barbados-by-way-of-Brooklyn eccentric dropped the Tidal-exclusive video for his chart-topping smash “Panda.” Though he spends most of the tune talking about Atlanta—and sounding a whole lot like Future sippin’ on some sort of new double-cup concoction—Desiigner goes down in history as first New York rapper to top the pop charts since Jay Z dropped “Empire State of Mind.” Where Jigga did it with an assist from Alicia Keys, Desiigner of course got a huge boost from Kanye West, who discovered his tune on Soundcloud and incorporated it into “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 2” the third cut on The Life of Pablo. Since that time a bunch of American rappers—from Fabolous to Lupe Fiasco to Jadakiss, and Meek Mill—have all hopped on the beat, which was built by UK-based producer Menace (who reportedly sold the beat to Desiigner for $200). Two of the more interesting flips have come from British microphone controllers, both with Caribbean roots: dancehall deejay Gappy Ranks aka Pelpa and Lady Leshurr of “Queen’s Speech” fame. No more long talking—let’s get to the tunes. Audio After The Jump…

Cali Dromeister Links With Hot Coffee Music—This Should Be Interesting

Looks like Gappy Ranks made some new friends while he was rolling through California for his Cookies tour. And it’s no surprise that Gappy and Bobby Hustle hit it off: they have so many shared interests: reggae, ganja, music, and… um, ganja. We’re feeling Bobby’s high-grade flow over Gappy’s “Throw Me Herb” riddim. As a white youth in the bizness, Bobby strikes the perfect balance: chill, street smart, and reggae savvy without Ja-Fakin’. Now that the Dynasty has linked with Hot Coffee music, nuff things are sure to be percolating . They don’t call him Bobby hustle fe nuttin. Video after the jump. (more…)

Pree The Outlook Boat Party Mix

Our peoples at The Heatwave made this remix on a boat party in Croatia this summer. We’ll let them tell the tale… “We were so inspired by the beautiful women and their amazing dancing on our Hot Wuk boat party at Outlook Festival that we made a special refix in the heat of the moment floating on the Croatian ocean. The response was crazy and we NEARLY fell off the boat from all the scandalous excitement, but luckily we survived and managed to make it home with the laptop and MP3 intact.” While you rock to this, check out RGAT’s exclusive interview with Gabriel from The Heatwave.  Audio after the jump
