    Shaggy & Sting Win Grammy for Best Reggae Album, And Also Burn Badmind

    “It’s nice to be nominated… But it’s better to win!”


    Dancehall reggae hitmaker Shaggy was honored twice at the 61st Grammy Awards, held yesterday in Los Angeles. Honor #1: The seven-time Grammy nominee was tapped to host the Grammy Premiere Ceremony, the day’s first round of award presentations, which was live-streamed from the Microsoft Theater, directly across the street from the Staples Center where the televised portion of the Grammy Awards took place. Honor #2: Shaggy’s collaborative project with Sting, 44/876, won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album. It was Shaggy’s second career win (his Boombastic album won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 1995) and Sting’s 16th. “They always say about the Grammys that it’s nice to be nominated,” Shaggy said while accepting the award. “I’m telling you right now, it’s better to win!” Interview After The Jump… (more…)

Meanwhile, the singer has been keeping it cool and touring the world spreading Jah love, as seen in this new video for one “Rasta” of the standout tracks from the project.     Since Protoje’s remarkable Ancient Future joined the legions of crucial reggae albums overlooked by the Grammy Awards, Diggy British hasn’t slowed down at all. The five songs comprising the B-side of his latest release, Royalty Free, have set the Internets ablaze since it was uploaded to his Soundcloud, demonstrating the full range of the artists’ creative powers. One track in particular, “Can’t Feel No Way,” produced by Tracker John, M.D., stood out from the rest—promptly getting added to BBC Radio 1 and showcasing sicker than your average flows and rhyme patterns that far surpass any “reggae revival” limitations.     Morgan Heritage Embarks On “So Amazing” U.S. Tour

    The Grammy Family Brings Laza Morgan & Jemere Morgan Along For Support

    After twenty-plus years making real roots rock reggae music, Morgan Heritage took home a richly deserved Grammy Award this year. Their self-produced set Strictly Roots won the award for Best Reggae Album, outpacing strong competition from the likes of Jah Cure, Luciano, Barrington Levy, and Rocky Dawuni. To celebrate with their fans, the Grammy family has announced a U.S. tour. You can call it a victory lap if you like. They’re calling it “So Amazing,” so you get the idea. They’ll be supported by family members Laza Morgan (whose tune “One by One” is a certified Boomshot) and Jemere Morgan (Gramps’ big son who’s growing into a lover’s rock force in his own right.)     When the Beatles imagined being over the hill and out of it, they sang a song called “When I’m Sixty-Four.” But reggae legend Jimmy Cliff has reached that ripe old age and he says he’s “just getting started.”  Cliff won the best reggae album Grammmy for his 2012 release, Rebirth, outdoing stiff competition from The Original Wailers, Sean Paul, Sly & Robbie, and Toots and the Maytals. But he’s not satisfied with being nominated… or even with winning. Jimmy Cliff wants to win on TV. “It’s a nice thing to be nominated for a Grammy,” he told CBSNews.com. “However, I do think that people ought to see me on TV, accepting the Grammy.     Although Buju Banton was not able to attend the Grammy Awards ceremony yesterday in Los Angeles, the reggae star—who is still confined to Florida—celebrated his win to the fullest. A member of Buju’s security team was startled when he heard shouting from Buju’s hotel room in Tampa, where the artist faces jury selection in his second trial on drug charges today. “I thought something was wrong,” the guard told The Jamaica Observer.
