Beaches, Bikinis, Waterfalls—It’s All In a Day’s Work

We may be close to the end of August, but trust and believe summer is still in full effect. Summer 2016 has been a big season for reggae and dancehall in the international pop charts, although much of it got labeled as “tropical house” in the mainstream media. That’s why you’ve got to love Konzequence Muzik Group for naming their summer juggling the “Tropical House Riddim”—a strategic move to rebrand this true Jamaican dancehall track in the midst of everything that’s going. “It’s all about a party vibes,” says reggae star Gyptian of his song on the riddim, a thing called “Summer Is Back.” Today Boomshots proudly premieres the official music video which is fully loaded with plenty of girls in bikinis, cool drinks, a secluded tropical waterfall—why can’t every day be like this? Gyppy Links The UK Queen—Zeen?

You don’t need to be a reggae fan to be familiar with Gyptian’s mega-smash “Hold Yuh,” and if you ain’t up on Lady Leshurr’s Queen’s Speech freestyles, well, you probably need to “Brush Your Teeth.” The two stars joined forces on The Diztortion’s nasty remix of Gyppy’s latest boom tune “All On Me,” and Lady L was more than happy to jet from from chilly Great Britain to sunny Port Antonio for this fun-loving video shoot. As her parents hail from St. Kitts, and she grew up surrounded by the sounds of Bob Marley and Sister Nancy, it’s no surprise how well she and Gyptian jelled on this track. The chemistry is undeniable. Video After The Jump… (more…)

HEAR THIS: Ricky Blaze’s “Uptown Julie” Riddim

BK Trancehall Innovator Drops a Sexy New Juggling To Hot Up Your  Summer

Every so often the trap door on Ricky Blaze‘s basement studio in East Flatbush Brooklyn bursts open and the artist, producer, and trancehall innovator emerges amidst a cloud of smoke to bless us all with another banger. This is one of those days. FME Records’ “Uptown Julie” riddim is a compact juggling, comprising four songs—”Stunta” by Gyptian, “Endless Summer” by Kes Dieffenthaller of Kes The Band fame, “Sell Off” by Zoelah, and “All I Need” by Mr. Blaze himself—each of which rocks in its own special way, revealing essential aspects each artist’s personality. In the hands of a skilled selector, these tracks mesh to form an irresistible and never-ending soundscape. Like most great dancehall cuts—and all of Blaze’s -catalog—the riddim itself is deceptively simple: a gentle keyboard chord progression floats above the kind of pulse-pounding drum pattern that sets bodies into motion, starting with a head nod and quickly spreading to shoulders and hips. In short, Julie represents just what every summer needs: a feel-good party groove perfect for pool parties, cookouts, and sweaty late-night wining sessions—and maybe, just maybe, the soundtrack to a new romance. Summer just got a likkle bit hotter. No wonder his name is Ricky Blaze.   Audio After The Jump… (more…)

Ricky Blaze & Gyppy Are Ready For Their Closeup

The first time Gyptian ventured into Ricky Blaze’s basement studio in Flatbush, Brooklym, he emerged with a certified-gold heard-round-the-world hit single called “Hold Yuh” which peaked on the Billboard charts in May 2010. Despite this massive success, the singer and producer haven’t made another record since—until earlier this year when Ricky Blaze unveiled a hypnotic new track as “Stuck.” Shot on a freezing-cold night at Rain nightclub in Jamaica, Queens, the visuals are nevertheless full of heat. Jah Cure, Gyptian, Mavado, and Ace Hood Join Papi As He Goes On A High-Grade Flight

Popcaan has been poppin’ for so long it’s hard to believe that The Raving King has yet to release a proper album, but that will change this May when his debut LP drops on Mixpak Records. Months ago we brought you the first single, “Everything Nice,” a somewhat sullen slow-burner produced by Dubbel Dutch, in which Papi contemplates mortality while sipping Henny and blazing high-grade. Now comes the music video, in which director Jay Will gets it poppin in a Hype Williams minimalist style. Iyah Cure, Gyppy, and the Gully Gaad (plus his rap bredren Ace Hood) pass through to show love. Video After The Jump…
