Revolutionary Sounds From One of Tuff Gong’s Finest

Back in 1980 Bob Marley was recruiting fresh talents as he prepared to build his Tuff Gong label into the Jamaican answer to Motown. One of his signees was a singer named Nadine Sutherland, who cut a single called “A Young One Like Me” for the Tuff Gong label. Unfortunately, Marley’s time on earth would be cut short and plans for Tuff Gong changed accordingly, but young Sutherland would continue her musical journey. She collaborated with Terror Fabulous on the Dave Kelly–produced 1994 smash hit “Action” and built a distinguished catalog of solo hits for producers like Donovan Germaine at Penthouse and Fattis Burrell at Xterminator. Most recently Nadine linked with UK dubmaster Mad Professor to record “Inna Mi Blood,” a blazing piece of rebel music that would surely make the Tuff Gong proud. “I am very passionate about the message in this song,” said the singer, who celebrates her birthday today. “It was written from observing the rise of racism in America and the subsequent deaths of African Americans as a result of it. I guess my roots have caught up with me. My association with Bob Marley was an influence too. This song is my tribute to Rastafari and our freedom fighters.” Video After The Jump… (more…)

The UK Lyrics Machine Was In Rare Form at Rebel Salute 2016

We’ve said ti before and we nah stop say it—when it comes to booking a fresh lineup of artists, Rebel Salute rules every time. Where else are you going to get a full set from Macka B? Faithful listeners of Mutabaruka’s Cutting Edge radio program are familiar with Macka’s 2006 single “All About The Youths.” But the sing-song acoustic number barely scratches the surface of the UK Lyrics Machine’s creativity. His latest album, Never Played a 45 laments the changing values in sound system culture as it calls for a return to feel and vibe of traditional vinyl selections. And Macka certainly has plenty of vinyl in his catalog. Born in Wolverhampton to Jamaican parents, Macka linked with Mad Professor in 1986 and began building intricate, articulate, infallibly intelligent lyrics on a wide variety of topics. This year’s Rebel Salute found the DJ in rare form; check the reasoning—onstage and off. Videos After The Jump… (more…)

The UK Singer Won’t Let You Pass Him By

“We still a push, we still a try,” Randy Valentine wails on the title track to his EP Still Pushing. “The gideon train is coming and mi cyan let it pass mi by/And when my well is running dry I don’t sit down and cry/We still a push, Almighty know we have to fly.” This is a pretty apt definition of the inspiration behind RV’s latest compilation of tracks—steadfast tenacity in trying times and the upliftment of people who strive toward better days.
