Jah Cure, Gyptian, Mavado, and Ace Hood Join Papi As He Goes On A High-Grade Flight

Popcaan has been poppin’ for so long it’s hard to believe that The Raving King has yet to release a proper album, but that will change this May when his debut LP drops on Mixpak Records. Months ago we brought you the first single, “Everything Nice,” a somewhat sullen slow-burner produced by Dubbel Dutch, in which Papi contemplates mortality while sipping Henny and blazing high-grade. Now comes the music video, in which director Jay Will gets it poppin in a Hype Williams minimalist style. Iyah Cure, Gyppy, and the Gully Gaad (plus his rap bredren Ace Hood) pass through to show love. Video After The Jump…

Mavado Speaks: “Our Thing Legendary… We Go On The Top Ourselves”

The Gully Gad Gives It All To The Fans At Sting

How happy was Mavado to be back home at Sting 2013? Well, he didn’t mind throwing his $1700 gold-plated Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers into the audience as a way of letting his fans know he appreciated theirGully Gad Gives It All To The Fans At Sting warm welcome. (The Gully Gad did not, however, fling his iced-out Jacob the Jeweler cross into the crowd.) Finishing his set in sock feet, Mavado made it clear that he might have been all over the world repping reggae and dancehall music, but his heart is always in Jamaica. Soon after leaving the stage he sat down with Reshma B to put the whole thing in perspective: “You done know our thing legendary yunno. I mean, remember, we are not artists that people try to make up and try to promote and try to put up on top. We go on the top ourselves. We becomes generals. We becomes leaders of this school ourselves. Nobody. No additive. No nothing. Just natural… So the fans nah go do nuttin but just love we.” Video After The Jump… (more…)

And Now For Some Next Level Shit

Ever since we heard that big Mavado & Nicki tune on the Overdrive riddim, visions of an ill video have been dancing in our heads. Well the Gully Gaad stopped by BET’s 106 & Park today with DJ Khaled to premiere tbe video and it’s every bit as jiggy as we imagined it would be. Expensive whips? Check. Jamaican flags? Check. Wining pon headtop? Check. Multiple wig colors? Check.  (Justus we see you!) OK so maybe the trailer suggested that this Grizz Lee epic might have a bit more of a plot, but why quibble?  The tune is on point and Stulla + Barbz = a good look for dancehall overall. The only bad part is that Roach isn’t here to enjoy it all. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Justus Arison Speaks on Patrick “Roach” Samuels’ Musical Legacy

Remembering A Fallen Soldier In The Music Business

The video for Mavado & Nicki Minaj‘s “Give It All To Me” is scheduled to premiere today on BET’s 106 & Park. The song, which is featured on DJ Khaled‘s new album Suffering From Success, represents a major milestone in the rise of reggae music in 2013. It’s one of the best collaborations between two superstars from the genres of dancehall and hip-hop. But for the song’s producer Justus Arison of JA Productions, today will be a bittersweet celebration because his friend and partner Patrick “Roach” Samuels will not be able to celebrate with him. Last month Roach was shot to death in a still-unsolved murder in Kingston, Jamaica. Roach’s murder has left the whole dancehall industry in shock. Justus had been working with him closely as their productions—particularly the Overproof, Overtime, and Overdrive riddims—ushered in a whole new feel and sound within dancehall. Justus and Mavado recently joined forces to pay tribute to Roach with their song “Soldiers.” He spoke with Boomshots about Roach’s musical legacy, and how he plans to go on in the future without his friend. Interview After The Jump… (more…)

  • Melanie Fiona Picks Her 10 Favorite Reggae & Dancehall Songs

Melanie Fiona Picks Her 10 Favorite Reggae & Dancehall Songs

The Grammy-Winning R&B Star Is A Bashment Girl At Heart

Melanie Fiona is best known for heart-wrenching hits like “It Kills Me” and “4 A.M.,” which have made the soulful singer a major star among American R&B fans. The two-time Grammy winner grew up in Toronto as the daughter of first-generation Guaynese immigrants. Her Caribbean influences have always been clear to the educated ear, from her dramatic vocal delivery to specific songs like “Somebody Come Get Me,” which was released under her old nom-de-reggae Syren Hall, as well as “No Cigarette Smoke,” her smoldering duet with Stephen Marley. Melanie continues to flaunt her Caribbean colors on “All My Love,” a new reggae-flavored duet with Toronto soul singer Glenn Lewis. Listening to the song there’s no mistaking the fact that Melanie’s Caribbean roots run deep. So we thought it would be cool to ask her to pick her top 10 reggae and dancehall tracks. Her picks speak volumes about her musical taste, her artistic temperment, and (dare we say it?) MF’s wild side. Click through the gallery above to check out Melanie’s selections and then read her candid conversation with Reshma B. Video And Interview After The Jump… (more…)

  • HEAR THIS: Mavado ft. Jadakiss “Just Like Magic”

Gullyside And D-Block Link Up With Musical Masquerade
    mavado-ft-jadakiss-Just-Like-Magic
Musical Masquerade likes his privacy. A mysterious figure who wears a creepy mask to conceal his identity in photos, MM says he’s worked as a songwriter and producer for years. For reasons that remain unclear he recently decided to start anew, pushing out his polished pop-leaning dancehall productions under a different identity. “There are red tape and yellow tape and politics that affect music,” the enigmatic producer stated in a recent interview. “So I decided to take on a new challenge and create something new without using my past successes and projects as the spear head. Snort of like Snoop Dogg versus Snoop Lion. Just a new path.” His forthcoming project, Elements of Reggae, has already given us the hit single “No Other Like You” by Rayvon and Red Fox. Now comes another collaboration that brings together dancehall and hip-hop artists of the highest ranks with a next-level sound. On “Just Like Magic” Mavado sings a melodic refrain for the ladies then Kiss steps in to spit a hot 16. “It’s always a great pleasure working with people who are professional and who aim to make the best music,” said Musical Masquerade. “The collaboration came about from an idea to blend the powerful, unique and unmistakable voices from reggae and hip hop and put them together on a reggae track. From there we reached out to the respective camps, so much respect to Skeng and Gullyside Mansion, We The Best Family and to Gusto and D Block for seeing the vision.”  Audio After The Jump… (more…)
