  • HEAR THIS: Mavado “Special Kinda Gyal”

Every Gangster Needs The Right Girl

Shabba put it straight when he said “happiness is a tight punany.” It must be true cause young gentlemen sing that to every kinda beat. The latest release from Di Genius is no exception. This one’s dedicated to the Gully Gad’s bad gyal. Sounds like she’s gotta be real bad—bad like the carnival. But more importantly she’s gotta know how to bend over and please him, and never leave him. Clearly he knows what he wants. Some guys think they want a bad girl but when they get one they cry about it. But just know that being a gangster’s special kinda gyal is no joke, and if you’re thinking you want to sign up for the challenge know what you’re gonna be in for. But something tells me if you make it to the finish line he’ll return the favor real good. One of Jamaica’s favorite singers has given us another single to wine to. And from the sounds of it, it’s bound to be another hit. Mavado has been through the Caribbean a few times, and he knows which girls known how to wine the best—even if he is banned from a few of those countries now and then! His newest single, “Caribbean Girls,” on JA Productions’ Overtime riddim, is one of the standout cuts on Mavado’s latest mixtape, So Suicidal, which dropped earlier this month. If you like the tune then you’ll love the visuals. It’s all about the girls—as usual—but not the ones who take the Gully Gad’s money and leave him lonely. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Echo Boomer No. 1 Raps With The ReggaeGirlAboutTown

Cris Cab is a young singer-songwriting from Miami with reggae roots, a pop sensibility, and a huge fanbase of hot young girls. (He calls his fans EchoBoomers—if you don’t know maybe you’re too old?) Cris first popped up on our radar when he signed with Pharrell and teamed up with Mavado for the Wyclef-produced boomshot “Rihanna’s Gun.” Today his EP Rise hits iTunes, featuring the Big Sean-assisted single “Good Girls Don’t Grow On Trees.” If you don’t know this youth yet, you might want to get familiar cause he’s in it to win it. Reshma B caught up with Cris recently for an up close and personal interview. Video After The Jump. (more…)

  • Interview: Mavado Talks We The Best Projects, “Suicidal” Video, Shuts Down Haters & Shouts Out Vybz Kartel

The Gully Gad Reasons With Reshma B In This Boomshots Exclusive

Last week we got our first look at Mavado’s latest video, “So Suicidal” off DJ Khaled’s new album, Kiss The Ring. Tonight at 6pm, the Gully Gad will appear with Khaled and a bunch of other hip-hop stars on BET’s 106 & Park, then he’ll jet back to Miami, where he’s been working on some collabos with Birdman—not to mention Fabolous, Busta Rhymes, French Montana, and the list goes on. Why is he grinding so hard since signing with We The Best Music Group? As one of the few dancehall artists in the game with a major label deal, Mavado feels as though he’s carrying an entire genre on his back right now. And even though he’s been away from home while he handles his biz, trust and believe that Jamaica is never far from his thoughts. The Reggae Girl About Town caught up with Mavado last night for an exclusive half-hour interview, and he had a lot on his mind. And you’ll never guess which fellow dancehall artist he keeps in his prayers.

If anything, that one sounds even sicker than “Suicide.”

  • Interview: Reasoning With Beenie Man

The Doctor Speaks On Gay Listeners, Nicki Minaj, and Why He Can’t Be Compared to Mavado and Kartel

Remember that tune where Beenie Man says “Me lose me visa but everything nice”? Well let’s just say that everything’s much nicer now that he’s got the visa (and work permit) back. Beenie’s electric performance at Grooving in the Park this past weekend was his first live show in New York since U.S. authorities revoked the his visa along with several other top dancehall acts in April 2010, effectively cutting them off from their U.S. audience. But the Doctor has stayed in the mix, collaborating with Nicki Minaj, touring Africa, and preparing to release a double album under his own MD Entertainment brand, appropriately titled The King In Control. Before the Doctor mashed up the Strictly Boomshots show at Miss Lily’s, we kicked it at the Complex offices. He spoke about working with Nicki Minaj, static with DJ Khaled, the  backlash from his famous video statement renouncing homophobic lyrics, and why he’s closer to Michael Jackson and Bob Marley than a lot of these so-called superstars.
