Studio One Legend Sings The Clash Classic

Joe Strummer’s flat, affect-less vocals on “Straight to Hell” from The Clash’s  1982 album “Combat Rock” lend a chilling air to the song’s ice cold message, which is now timelier than ever in the Trump administration prepares executive orders, travel bans, mass deportations. and wall building. “Straight to Hell” has long been considered one of the band’s best loved songs, providing raw material for future creations like M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” and Kanye West’s “Swagger Like Us.” Andy himself is a bonafide Studio One legend who’s also worked with the likes of Massive Attack. Strummer first collaborated with him in 1999, writing the militant title track for Andy’s “Living in the Flood” album. The Studio One legend had already attempted a reggae version of “Straight to Hell” but wasn’t happy with the recording. But when he linked with Milwaukee musician Eric Blowtorch, who’s worked with many reggae artists and knew Strummer, they made this brand new roots reggae recording of “Straight to Hell,” which will be released via 12-inch single on Fe True Records March 16th and via digital download on April 14th. Andy’s voacal is backed with a dub side plus Big Youth’s deejay version, “Asylum Seekers.” These type of hardcore reality tunes are all too timely in the current political climate—and do remember 10 per cent of proceeds goes to Doctors Without Borders. Turn up to full watts. Audio After The Jump… (more…)

Daps Gets All in His Feelings on this new Tune for the Ladies

You might know Dexta Daps from his street anthem “Shabba Madda Pot” or his new collab with M.I.A. “Foreign Friend,” but the latest release from the dancehall heartthrob is entitled “Mi C Mi Bed N Miss U.” According to the artist “It’s about a real-life situation where you miss that person so much you go home from work one day and you just see the bed and you’re like, “Oh my God! Where’s my significant other?” In a recent interview with Pigeons & Planes, the Seaview Gardens star speculated as to why she’s not by his side in the tune. “Maybe she’s out there with another man?” he said with a laugh. “I don’t know. Maybe she’s cheating? That’s why I give her a Chinese Jordan.” This led correspondent Reshma B to probe further on Daps’ views on male-female relationships, as his hit tune “7Eleven” outlines a very open-minded approach to commitment. “Let me tell you what I really believe. Whether or not she is doing it I will never know, so I’m not gonna put it in my mind that she’s not, I’m not gonna put it in my mind that she is. I just don’t care. If she does, I’m right at “I don’t care.” And if she’s not, I’m still at “don’t care.” Me are her are good. We are still good.” Elsewhere in the Pigeons & Planes feature, Daps speaks about working with M.I.A. and the real-life inspiration for “Shabba Madda Pot.” Check the new sounds, plus highlights from this rare interview.      Maya & Daps Link Pon The Borderline

Ever since M.I.A. first burst on the world, she has been all about crossing lines in the sand, using her playground chants, beatbox ballistics, and agitprop visuals to mash up all cultural and geopolitical borderlines. Now that M.I.A.’s released what she warns may be her last album, her focus on speaking truth to power from a refugee point of view takes on new urgency as the world finds itself in the midst of a “refugee crisis” and Brexit meltdown and a Trump presidential run. As soon as M.I.A. released “Borders” (both the song and its breathtaking video) anticipation for this album began to build, and yesterday AIM finally arrived. On this track Maya dabbles with dancehall star Dexta Daps of “7Eleven” and “Shabba Mudda Pot” fame who sounds like the UK bad gyal inspired him to hit some strong new notes. Audio After The Jump…

New Music From A Bad Gyal “Bandit” Who Does It Well

Maya “Mathangi” Arulpragasam dropped this frenetic banger a few weeks back with the following caption: TO ALL MY FLYPIRATES and DJS – THIS IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT !!!! LIVE FROM THE MEXICAN BORDER OLA !!!! MIA ON THE WAVES. Judging from the artist’s recent tweets, the whole issue of crossing the American border might have resonated with her. “Can’t tour the US without a visa,” she tweeted the other day. “Might have to start writing songs 4 Dj Khaled and Selena Gomez to get heard”!!! Maya & Partysquad Connect On a Reggae-Flavored Matangi Raveup

Remember that song you used to sing when you were a kid? “Uh-ohhh you’re in trouble.” Well MIA and Partysquad have updated it for her latest album, Matangi, adding a reggae backbeat and some grown up lyrics: “I step up in the game and burst your bubble.”  This week she dopped the vid, which was directed by MIA herself. Looks bad girls do it right. The new visuals shows the making of fully functional guns using a 3D printer at home? Sound far fetched? They can burst more than a bubblle. Welcome to the future, circa 2014. This ain’t no kids stuff. Video After The Jump… (more…)

The Seminal UK Punk Band and the Producer Reason with The Reggae Girl About Town

Combat Rock was the last studio album by seminal UK punk band The Clash. Released in 1982, the disc contained two of the band’s biggest hit, “Rock the Casbah” and “Should I Stay Or Should I Go.” But 25 years later another cut from the album—the reggae-tinged cut “Straight To Hell”—would top the charts around the world. M.I.A. and her DJ Diplo sampled The Clash original to make “Paper Planes,” which became the biggest hit in either artists’ career. The track became so popular that Kanye West sampled the M.I.A. record to make another record called “Swagga Like Us,” which he performed on the Grammys with Jay Z, Lil Wayne, T.I., and a very pregnant M.I.A. It was kind of a big deal. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Maya Opens Up Her Laptops And Talks About Her Artistic Journey From Arular to Matangi
Just after Hurrican Sandy wreaked havoc on New York City, M.I.A. blew into town for a artist chat at the Museum of Modern Art’s PS1 Performance Dome in Queens. The event was supposed to be a discussion of her new book, but due to the storm copies were in scarce supply. Maya did offer signed prints for sale, donating a portion of the proceeds to Hurricane Sandy victims. M.I.A. spent a little bit of time speaking about her new album, Matangi, which will not be released in December but will feature green parrots and a newfound sense of spirtuality mixed with a touch of get-back at all the haters. But the bulk of her talk was a free-wheeling stroll through three laptop computers that she used to create her last three albums. Like so many UK underground musicians M.I.A. has always had a generous portion of reggaematic and spacey dubwise sounds in her audio mix. Boomshots first spoke with her back in 2005, and we’ve always had a soft spot for her roots rock rebel spirit. At MoMa she spoke about her early work as a London video artist (often making awesome clips of herself dancing), her progression to more politically charged stencil art, and why she keeps falling in and out of love with the Internet. Video After the Jump…
