    The last time Popcaan set foot in the United Kingdom, he used an OVO duplate to seal up Mixpak’s decisive victory in the Red Bull Culture Clash. Now comes news that the Unruly Boss will be performing live at the 21st Annual MOBO Awards in Glasgow, Scotland. The awards, which honor Music of Black Origin around the world, will kick off in just a few hours. This year’s Best Reggae Act nominees include Popcaan, Alkaline, Spice, Kranium, and Protoje.     MOBO Awards Announce 2016 Best Reggae Artist Nominees

    Will Popcaan Continue His Winning Streak?

    This morning in London the nominees for this year’s MoBo (Music of Black Origin) Awards were announced. Now celebrating its 21st year, the MoBos have often done a better job reflecting the sound of the streets than the Grammy’s, particularly in the Reggae award category, honoring not only the Best Reggae Album (like the Grammy’s) but the overall Best Reggae Artist. Last year’s nominees included UK-based Stylo G, Chronixx, Protoje, Omi [who might have been amused to be included in this category since the Jamaican-born pop artist always made clear that he’s not a reggae artist], with the award going to Mr. “World Cup” himself, Popcaan—who got the nod this year as well.     Sean Paul Wins MOBO Reggae Award

    Other Winners Include Tinie Tempeh, Wiley, Rudimental, Fuse ODG, Naughty Boy, and Laura Mvula 

    This Weekend the UK celebrated the 18th staging of the MOBO—Music Of Black Origin—Awards. This year Scotland’s capital Glasgow played host and was rammed with celebrities galore—from Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora to So Solid Crew and Ms Dynamite. Craig David even flew in from Miami to present an award. It’s been an exciting year for reggae and the nominees for the Best Reggae Act category were right on point for 2013 making this category a real nail-biter. The competition was tough between Mavado, Stylo G, Sean Paul, Popcaan and Tarrus Riley—and as they say “may the best man win.” So congrats to Sean Paul for taking that home. This makes it a cool 3 times for Sean Paul. Unfortunately Dutty Paul didn’t make it to Glasgow to receive his award in person but he did send through a video of his acceptance speech—RRRRRRRRRR! (always wonder how the organisers keep that under wraps!) Other highlights from the event included Tinie Tempah taking home ‘Best UK Hip Hop/Grime,’ Rudimental taking home “Best Album,” Fuse ODG taking home “Best African Act” Naughty Boy Taking Home “Best Video” Wiley taking home “Best Male Act” and Laura Mvula taking home “Best R&B/Soul Act” & “Best Female.” Check here for full list. All in a days work—back with the MOBOs next year!     The Soundbwoy has been making some noise for a minute—teaming up with 3Beat and dropping some musical bombhells. And it looks like the noise is being heard loud and clear. The MOBO Awards recently announced their shortlist of nominees for the 18th ceremony, and Stylo G bagged not one but two nods: ‘Best Reggae Act’ and ‘Best New Comer’. You can check the official MOBO Site for full details, but his competition in the reggae category includes Mavado, Popcaan, Sean Paul, and Tarrus Riley.     It’s super A-nnoying when award shows get it wrong. Most times the nominees are naff AND then the wrong person wins! Especially in a specialized category like Reggae where you’ve got to know your stuff. But the Music of British Origin Awards does better than most. They’ve announced their shortlist for Best Reggae Act and I’m not mad at their picks (listed in alphabetical order): Damian Marley, Konshens, Mr. Vegas, Popcaan, Sean Paul. So who should win?
