    Chronixx Confirmed As Opening Act For Nas & Lauryn Hill North American Tour

    Not a Bad Way to Roll Out Chronology!

    MASS APPEAL reports that Nasty Nas and L-Boogie aka Ms. Lauryn Hill will embark upon a North American tour this fall, with Jamaican reggae star Chronixx as their opening act. The Queensbridge rapper and the former member of the Fugees famously collaborated on the 1996 anthem “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” off of Nas’ chart-topping sophomore album, It Was Written, and have remained close friends since. For over 20 years these two artists have proven themselves to be some of the most distinctive and influential voices in hip hop. Both artists have also show a strong respect for reggae music—Hill having collabed with Bounty Killer as a member of The Fugees, and with Bob Marley on the classic duet “Turn Your Lights Down Low.” Nas meanwhile joined forces with Damian Marley for the classic album Distant Relatives. Chronixx debut album, Chronology, is set to drop June 30th on all digital platforms. The tour will kick off in Chicago on September 7 and end in Vancouver on October 11.     Will There Be A Distant Relatives Reunion at This Year’s 9Mile Music Festival?

    If The Stars Align This Weekend In Miami, Anything Can Happen

    The 9 Mile Music Festival was established in 1993 as the brainchild of Cedella Marley Booker in honor of her son, Robert Nesta Marley. Formerly known as Marley Fest and The Caribbean Music Festival, the event has been renamed 9 Mile after Bob’s birthplace as well as his final resting place—the little village in St. Ann Parish that lies at the heart of the Marley legacy. More than a concert,  the 9 Mile Music Festival provides millions of canned goods to local homeless shelters and domestic centers throughout Miami; feeding families in need for months after the show is over. For 22 years, the concert has required canned goods in addition to the price of admission, and it always will. Given its strong ties to the Marley family, the show is always packed with reggae royalty, and this year is no exception, with Stephen “Ragga” Marley, Julian “JuJu Royal” Marley, and their nephew Skip Marley all scheduled to perform this Saturday, February 27th. In addition, both Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Nas are billed—and while each of these living legends will be performing his own set, anticipation is in the air that the two lyrical giants may join forces on stage to recreate the magic of their 2010 album Distant Relatives.  Full Details After The Jump… (more…)

    A few years ago the Boomshots massive bucked up Jah Thomas chilling backstage at Reggae Sumfest 2012. The foundation reggae DJ and pioneering producer said he was the “happiest man on the planet” because his production, “Dance in New York” by Super Cat, had recently been sampled by Salaam Remi for the hit Nas tune “The Don.” [Check the full story behind the making of that song HERE.] During the interview Jah Thomas casually mentioned that he still had some unreleased Super Cat joints on tape. This came as a revelation to Wild Apache fans who haven’t a new Cat tune since 19-how-long… Well, good news: one of those 1984 Midnight Rock masterworks has now surfaced on the Internet. Give thanks & praise.     Besides being a crucial entertainer with the mic in his hand, Jah Thomas was one of the first dancehall DJs to take control of his own destiny as a businessman. His “Midnight Rock” label did not just release certified boomshots like his own “Shoulder Move” and “Friday Night Jamboree,” he also released the work of fellow artists like a young Super Cat. Cat’s Midnight Rock release “Dance Inna New York” became a big sensation when it was sampled to create Nas’s Salaam Remi-produced banger “The Don.” Backstage at this year’s Reggae Sumfest, we were fortunate enough to bump into Papa Thomas and a legendary interview ensued. He said that proceeds from the Nas sample has changed the color on his house, and that he recently discovered an unreleased Super Cat song called “Ever Ready.” (We’re more than ready to hear that.) We knew it was a Salaam Remi production, based on a classic Super Cat sample, and “Heavy D gave this beat to Salaam for me to rap on.” But the details surrounding the creation of this modern-day classic have remained murky until now.     Heavy D Flips a Classic Super Cat Sample, Salaam Remi Tees It Up and Nastradamus Spits Fire

    It’s well known that Salaam Remi and Nas have a very special creative chemistry—as seen when the producer and MC collaborated on classics like “Made U Look.” What’s less well known is that both are big reggae fans. The track was actually built by the late great Heavy D, whose collabos with Super Cat are well known. Hev passed the track to Remi—who  produced Spragga Benz’s epic Shotta Culture album. Nas of course collaborated with Damian Marley on the album Distant Relatives, so Remi felt it was only right to put him on the record. During the Distant Relatives promo run, Nas spoke about his early reggae and dancehall musical menu: “It was the 80s,” he recalled. ‘Who was the dudes? Pass the Dutchie Pon the Left.’ [Musical Youth] It was a lot of old-school cuts. You had Yellowman, of course Bob Marley, Peter Tosh. A lot of the early dudes. We listened to everything. Shabba Ranks, all a that. I was Supercatted-up… I studied the battles with Supercat and Ninjaman.” Now Nas and Remi have brought their mututal interests together on this blazing new cut called “The Don.” Remi’s track is built around a sample from a rare Super Cat single “Dance Inna New York.” Nas’s rap is built on Henny, blunts, and sheer genius.     Performing Tracks From Distant Relatives Live For The First Time

    Last night’s show at the Highline Ballroom was sold out for weeks in advance, and when the time came for the Distant Relatives to come together, the energy was at a peak. Even the New York Times was paying attention to this long anticipated collaboration between Damian Jr. Gong Marley and Nasty Nas. And although most of the songs on the set list had never been performed in public before, they proved had no trouble moving the crowd. Both artists had their own solo sets—Damian performed his father’s classic “No More Trouble” on a night when all of Jamaica was thinking the same thing, and Nas ran through a medley of hits including “Made U Look,” and a motherland remix of “One Mic” accompanied only by hand drums. His biggest forward of the night came during the “alimony” lyrics at the end of “Strong Will Continue” which segued perfectly into “Hate Me Now.” But at the end of the night, it was all about love…
