    Before Andrae Sutherland lays his head on the pillow at night, he has to give thanks. After all, when you consider the blessings that reach the Unruly Boss on a daily basis, it’s truly remarkable. He’s from a place where dog eat dog, and look at him now. “God make me bless inna real life,” Popcaan sings on his latest selection. “I’m protected by the Most High.” Over a few pensive chords courtesy of  UIM Productions, Papi counts his blessings like beads on a rosary string, before shouting out his thugs who pass and gone, all who inna jailhouse, and then runs down a lengthy roll call of his family, friends, and loved ones—from Squid and Squiddel to Jamie, Creep and Chi Ching Ching.     Over the past four years Popcaan’s artistry has grown by leaps and bounds. Not so long ago he was considered one of Kartel’s more promising proteges, poppin’ off with “Clarks” and moving forward into “Raving” and “Party Shot” before the big buss that was “Only Man She Want.” Since that time the Unruly Boss has been in fast forward mode #TR8. Although his 2014 debut album was criminally slept on by Grammy voters, Where We Come From is our consensus pick for dancehall disc of the year. And on newer cuts like “R.I.P.” Andrae Sutherland revealed a more sensitive side. But do not get it twisted. This is the same youth who used to name Fry Yiy. And Just in case you forgot why him name “Unruly,” Popcaan linked with Baby G to flex some wicked bad- man lyrics over a tasty update of one of King Jammy’s vintage digi riddims that’s dripping with delicious delay.  As Poppy explains on “Fix Tings,” he will still “crawl pon him belly like a crocodile / Fi buss bwoy head inna many style.” He relates his tales of murderous mayhem with a light-hearted touch of good humor, but the message comes through loud and clear.     Last Thursday in Kingston, Jamaica, dancehall star Popcaan gave his fans an early Christmas present when he turned up to a pop-up shop for his TR8  collab with RGAT Chains. In lieu of the usual high-energy performances he delivered at Tuesday night’s Ghetto Splash and the Saturday night Major Lazer show in Kingston, the Unruly Boss performed what was planned to be a “short” acoustic set that basically turned into the world’s first Popcaan Unplugged concert.     That’s What You Call A Grand Finale

    Christmas is high season in Jamaica, an endless string of packed-out parties and star-studded stage shows. Even if money gets tight around the holidays, there’s no need to buy expensive tickets for some of the best shows of the season as artists show love to their fans with plenty of free shows. Eith the return of shows like Ghetto Splash—a Yuletide dancehall showcase which has run on and off since the 1990s—the downtown community of Waterhouse gets a much-needed dancehall stimulus package to  community residents, and a great concert to dancehall fans everywhere. The highlight of last year’s show was the appearance of both Popcaan and Mavado on stage at the same time, a cherished moment of Gaza/Gully harmony. Anticipation ran high for this year’s show, which did not disappoint. Surprise appearances by Shaggy and Beenie Man were just the beginning—the grand finale was a whole ‘nother level.     Nuff things a gwan in Kingston this week. Tuesday night is Ghetto Splash at Waterhouse Mini Stadium, with an all-star lineup that gets heavier by the day. This weekend it’s all about Live From Kingston featuring Protoje, Kabaka Pyramid, and No-Maddz But the exclusive jump-off is going down on Thursday December 18th, when We Are Massiv joins forces with Reshma B Chains to host a Popcaan pop-up shop at Base Kingston in Kingston, Jamaica—Upper Manor Park Plaza, Shop #11 to be exact. You may have seen Reshma B Chains’ new Look Book, which just premiered on The Fader.     The Hotskull Finds An Empress To Cool Him Down

    The latest visual offa Poppi’s Where We Come From album is all about the love between one man and one woman. “Love Yuh Bad” (produced by Dre Skull) was the first track leaked off Popcaan’s debut album on Mixpak Records, and the accompanying video finds Hotskull and his queen in the rain forests of St. Thomas where the natural vibes flow (inna back-to-nature Adam and Eve style). This video should really be picked up by the Jamaica Tourist Board because after you watch it you will want to book two tickets to paradise like Eddie Money. Watching Popcaan and his lady boiling bananas, burning spliffs, and playing in the river serves as a timely reminder that you don’t have to have a big fat roasted turkey in the oven to give thanks.     The Unruly Boss Graces The Mag’s Summer Music Issue

    Dancehall star Popcaan is one of the four artists featured on the cover of The Fader‘s new music issue as the promotions for his Where We Come From album ramp up ahead of next Tuesday’s release.  In the story music journalist Jesse Serwer journeys up to Papi’s birthplace, the rural village of Hayfield in the Jamaican parish of St. Thomas. Along the way he learns the roots of Papi’s nickname. “This call-it-what-I-want approach to language—[Popcaan]’s music is similarly rich with fresh terminology—is perhaps summed up best by the term he’s becoming synonymous with: unruly. It’s a word that Popcaan recalls hearing during childhood scoldings, and which he’s flipped into a badge of independence, proudly worn in song lyrics, social media hashtags, homemade T-shirts and a tattoo on his chest that reads “Unruly Boss” (his followers and associates have likewise dubbed themselves the Unruly Gang).     Gaza Slim’s Redemption Song

    April 3, 2014 was a melancholy day for dancehall fans, when Justice Lenoxx Campbell made his ruling in the murder case of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Adidja Palmer aka Vybz Kartel was sentenced to life, with the possibility of parole after 35 years. In this case, no body was ever found and the case was decided mostly on text message evidence from telephones seized from the accused. Attorneys Christian Tavares-Finson and his father Tom Tavares-Finson, both lawyers who defended the dancehall artist, are already working on an appeal. Vybz Kartel associates Shawn Campbell aka Shawn Storm and Kahira Jones also received life sentences with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Shane Williams, another associate was acquitted on all charges in this murder case but charged for another murder case. Vanessa Saddler aka Gaza Slim, Vybz Kartel’s protégé was charged with a lesser charge, obstruction of justice, for filing a false incident report about being robbed at knife-point by Clive “Lizard” Williams, just five days after Kartel was charged with murder, in an effort to pervert justice. As Kartel fans gathered outside of the Jamaican Supreme Court for the 58-day trial, Gaza Slim showed her presence and undying love for the World Boss.  More After The Jump…

    Watch the Unruly Boss Shell Down a Stage Show and Talk About His Debut Album

    When we last caught up with him at the 2013 staging of Reggae Sumfest, Popcaan told Reshma B that his debut album would be coming next year and that it would be “totally different,” with more “uplifting” songs. Now that the album is completed, he can shed a little bit more light on the project, which is titled Where We Come From and will be dropping on Mixpak Records June 10. Known for hits like “Ravin” and “Party Shot” and “Only Man She Want,” Papi shows a different side on the new album, starting with the single “Everything Nice” which blends the serious realities of life with an uplifting forget-your-troubles-and-dance vibe. After years of playing his position in the Gaza camp as Vybz Kartel’s protege, Popcaan is now acknowledged as a major star in his own right who rolls with his own clique, Team Unruly.
